Rude for a neighbour to use your dustbin if you’ve never even spoken?

meadowlanee · 18/03/2024 00:03

The house two doors down (no idea how many live in the house) that constantly have bin bags piled up on their driveway. It’s gross. We’re talking like 7+ (with an overflowing bin)

I’ve seen them start using my bin on my Ring Doorbell on the night before collection a few times now. I know it’s a non problem but it feels so entitled that we’ve never do much as spoken and they feel it’s ok to use my dustbin. They filled it so full one time the lid on my bin wouldn’t close.

My neighbour did this despite his bin being empty and not even put out for collection. I took the bin bag out and left it on his doorstep!

sugarloafislander · 18/03/2024 06:02

I’m with you OP. Our neighbour a couple of doors down does the same frequently, hasn’t asked and isn’t a particularly pleasant person. Our recycling bin is almost filled for the collection every other week and then lo and behold you see him sneaking out the house at midnight (well Ring doorbell does) emptying his recycling into it. It’s only really, really annoying when it’s like last week when I go to put an empty carton of milk into it as the collection comes at 7 and it was 6.30am and it wouldn’t fit as he had dumped all his crap into it and the lid won’t shut.

benjoin · 18/03/2024 06:11

Can you go and talk to them? I don't mean that in a rude way I mean are you able to as you might not be able to.

If you can then maybe go round and say you don't mind them putting stuff in the night before collection but cam they please make sure your bin is shut as the bin collection operatives have complained.

BeckiWithAnI · 18/03/2024 06:12

This so bloody cheeky. I’m not sure about where you live but where I am if you have excess waste then you need to buy special refuse bags for the extra. They are just being tight.
Here they can be super strict and if your bin lid doesn’t close they won’t take it. So yes, I would absolutely have a problem with it.
If they need a bigger bin they can pay and apply to the council, buy excess refuse bags, or take additional waste to the tip like everyone else.
Now if this was a one off I’d say let it go but to regularly do this is bloody entitled.
I would make a point of saying you went to put another bag in first thing and your bin was full, and you’d seen they had put their rubbish in your bin, can they not do this in future.
If this fails I would just put my bins out very early in the morning. That would be inconvenient for me, but I’d do it out of principle to be hone

bluecomputerscreen · 18/03/2024 06:17

we had that.
and half of the neighbours bin where not collected because the lids couldn't close.
and the green bins as well as they put their waste in those ad well.

plus it was mostly commercial anyway (paint buckets, brushes and scraps of papef and covering sheets).

you can get bin locks for wheely bins.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 18/03/2024 06:25

Our old neighbours used to put their dog shit in our bin because ours were on the front yet they'd have to walk through their house with poo bag to use theirs. We didn't have a dog at the time and I objected to having shit in our bin because every time we opened it it smelled awful. It eventually progressed to fast food wrappers too because their teenage DD saw mum and dad do it so why not her? We put a ring doorbell sticker on the bin and it stopped. I know it was the cowards way out but if it had carried on we'd have said something. Cheeky fuckers!

I had no idea this was the case.
Have thought about them myself, but could see me racing out in my slippers to unlock as the lorry approached 😂

There are different types of bin locks, if you get a gravity lock you don't need to unlock it when it's emptied = the lock mechanism unlocks the bin automatically when the bin is upside down in the bin lorry

Loubelle70 · 18/03/2024 06:38

I had this with new neighbour 12 years ago. Decent folk. I was up at 3 in morning with back pain and seen him ninja to my bin with a bin bag 🤣. Tickled me actually.
I had word and said if theres room in my bin just put rubbish in but make sure its not leaky or unacceptable stuff. He still puts stuff in but we wave now and chuckle...i pretend to do a james bond roll and hide behind wall 🤣🤣.
It wont hurt OP.

This made me laugh 😆

Madeinmamc · 18/03/2024 06:44

About 10% of people voting think this is OK which tallies pretty well with the percentage of cheeky fuckers in the wider population.

Bestyearever2024 · 18/03/2024 06:49

AdaColeman · 18/03/2024 01:03

You could get a bin lock to stop them dumping garbage in your bin. The mechanism on the bin lorry automatically opens the bin lock.

This ^

Excellent idea

Or contact the council on their behalf and order them a second bin 😳🤪

Lurkingandlearning · 18/03/2024 06:54

meadowlanee · 18/03/2024 00:10

Or they could request an extra bin? I’m sure you can if it’s a household of 5. If they put all that rubbish in my bin (during the two week collection gap) it would completely fill it up with no room for mine.

In my area we are charged for extra bins which might put them off. Or they might not know they are available.

I have explained local bin rules to a couple of new neighbours as I could see what they were doing would result in their bins not being emptied. I’m pretty sure when I broached the subject they initially thought I was being nosy and interfering but when they realised I was trying to help them they thanked me.

Maybe you could have a chat. They might not like having rubbish pile up but not know what to do

InlikealionOutlikeahare · 18/03/2024 07:04

Get a bin lock.

TesticularHeft · 18/03/2024 07:08

Some areas won't give additional bins if you pay or not. Yes, it's rude. It's an awkward thing to bring up in conversation so maybe that's why - but I would still do it because to not, is cheeky.

I'd start waving at them if you see them and see if they open up and ask.

hopscotcher · 18/03/2024 07:09

NameChange14192089 · 18/03/2024 00:05

I'd rather them use my bin than have bags in the driveway attracting vermin.

Yeah, my first thought too.

daffodilandtulip · 18/03/2024 07:17

My neighbours don't have a bin. The guy who comes around checking bins before the lorry arrives collects all their bags and puts them in our / other bins. It (very irrationally) gives me rage. Especially the week it wasn't collected for being too full as a result.

bluecomputerscreen · 18/03/2024 07:31

when I lived in europe I would have been pissed off at this as we were billed by weight.

SnowyPetals · 18/03/2024 07:34

It would be fine if it was just occasionally but once they start doing it regularly it becomes an expectation on their part and they might just put stuff in there and fill it up before you do. In my experience people like this don't have boundaries and then move on to parking on your drive etc.

Alwaysalwayscold · 18/03/2024 08:31

Id start with a note through the door and go from there.

"Hi neighbours at number X,
I have noticed you using our wheelie bin and would like to ask that you don't do that again. Here is the council's website where you can order another bin if you need to.
Thanks, number X "

Allfur · 18/03/2024 08:34

Why have they got so much rubbish every week? Do they not recycle?

TheBirdintheCave · 18/03/2024 08:40

Allfur · 18/03/2024 08:34

Why have they got so much rubbish every week? Do they not recycle?

We see this on our road. Our recycling bins are very large but the regular waste bins are not. The bins alternate in collection each week. If you recycle correctly it's a non issue but very few people here seem to actually do so and their regular waste bins are always overflowing with recyclables 🙄

ohdamnitjanet · 18/03/2024 08:48

I’m with you @meadowlanee I’d be livid and would definitely tell them you don’t give permission.
If you can’t lock the bins, I like another posters idea to put a ring doorbell sticker on the bin so they know they’re being filmed.

Iknowwhatadogis · 18/03/2024 08:50

My bin is kept very clean but I know lots of people don't bother. That's one reason I wouldn't want someone putting their rubbish in my bin (leaky bags and goodness knows what they are chucking out)

Allfur · 18/03/2024 08:51

They sound like dickheads who don't give a toss about anything or anyone

Beautiful3 · 18/03/2024 09:30

If it was just a bag I really wouldn't mind. However if they over filled it so that the lid didn't close properly, then I would mind. I'd write a note to say, "Hi, I've noticed that you've been using my bin. Please stop because there's no room for my own rubbish. You can order an extra bin from the council." If they don't stop you can actually get a bin lock which opens automatically when it's tipped.
