Rude for a neighbour to use your dustbin if you’ve never even spoken?

meadowlanee · 18/03/2024 00:03

The house two doors down (no idea how many live in the house) that constantly have bin bags piled up on their driveway. It’s gross. We’re talking like 7+ (with an overflowing bin)

I’ve seen them start using my bin on my Ring Doorbell on the night before collection a few times now. I know it’s a non problem but it feels so entitled that we’ve never do much as spoken and they feel it’s ok to use my dustbin. They filled it so full one time the lid on my bin wouldn’t close.

Why have they got so much rubbish every week? Do they not recycle?

commercial waste?

Datafan55 · 18/03/2024 09:41

Can you speak via your ring doorbell? - I like the idea of announcing loudly that you can see them or asking them what they are doing (a nice open question so they have to answer). You get ten points if they wee themself with fright.

SquashPenguin · 18/03/2024 09:43

Get a bin lock on Amazon for £20. We have one on the wheelie bin at work because of the amount of shit other people in the area fill it up with.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/03/2024 09:45

Put a lock on the bins. Cheeky feckers. I think you can get a lock that you open with a phone, and give the code to the dustmen? or give them a key?
Send a print out through their door showing them the page to order a new bin from the council.
If they had asked then it's different but that is basically stealing in my view!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 18/03/2024 09:57

Wow the things people care about! Your empty unused bin space 🤣.

I would care about the open lid, though.

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/03/2024 00:25

It's a wee bit cheeky but no harm done.

Ě dpt when the binmen don't empty your bin because the neighbour has put items in that shouldn't be in that bin. Bloody annoying as you then have to go through your u emptied bin and fish out the offending rubbish.

Frequency · 18/03/2024 10:22

OP hasn't said that her bin hasn't been emptied because of the neighbours so it is reasonable to assume they are not putting anything in there that shouldn't be in there.

I really couldn't find the energy to get worked up about this. They are using free space on collection day. Apart from reducing the rubbish outside their house them using the bin is having literally no impact on the OP.

Also, some councils don't allow extra bins. Mine doesn't. I'm at the tip weekly because my bin is full but I'm not allowed another bin.

why is your bin full?
5 of us here and we usually fill about half a black bin bag a week. rest is recycling.

KrushedIvy · 18/03/2024 10:29

Just stick a note on top of the bin saying do not overfill

Frequency · 18/03/2024 10:34

@bluecomputerscreen I have no idea. I wish I did so I could do something about it. I don't drive as of yet so getting to the tip is a pain in the arse. I'm learning atm and one of the things I am most excited about is the ability to go to the tip as often as I want to. I've already told people I will be there every day when I first pass my test.

I have considered that it might be the cat litter. Both trays get emptied every 2-3 days and once emptied use around 1/3 of an average-sized black bag but IDK if that would be enough.

We also only have a regular-sized bin but there are often 5 of us here as the kids will have their friend/boyfriends over quite a lot.

We do recycle. The recycling bin is also stuffed full every week, which is what makes me think it is probably not the cat litter causing the issue. I've even switched the dog and cats to dry food to try to reduce the amount of rubbish we generate.

WB205020 · 18/03/2024 10:50

Its been known on the odd occasion for us to put the last bit of rubbish out first thing on collection day. I would be fuming if a neighbour had filled our bin to the brim the evening before.

You need to nip this in the bud. Go to theirs and tell them you have no problem so long as they ask incase you need to put things in it and cant as they have filled it up.

Lavenderlulu · 18/03/2024 11:01

It's nice to be asked but once it's on the street I see it as fair game for neighbours to top up if need to, so as long as they're considerate I'd likely not notice. Your situation would piss me off as clearly is an ongoing issue they need to resolve themselves by reducing waste, ask council for bigger/extra bin, pay for a private bin collection or take to the tip.

If I've only got 1 bin bag or recycling bits I'll often put in a single neighbours bin when room (always late night so already on street) as seems pointless putting mine out & less work for collectors. I usually end up bringing 2 bins back in because they forget and gets in the way.

I had one CF neighbour, who asked as a one time favour and saying yes = treat my bin as your own. I had to to take their rubbish out a few times so I could fit mine in & pissed me off as they were messy, put excluded items in & then was heavy for me to drag out. After request fell on deaf ears, I started just tipping it back out near their bin before I put mine in & leaving them to deal with it. I was looking into gravity bin locks when the couple split, but I honestly don't know how they managed to fill near on 2 bins + recycling bin as families on the street didn't seem to struggle as much.

StoorieHoose · 18/03/2024 11:11

Our non recyclable bin gets emptied once a month and on many occasions are late being emptied - no way would I be entertaining someone else using my bin without asking

NameChange14192089 · 18/03/2024 11:12

meadowlanee · 18/03/2024 00:10

Or they could request an extra bin? I’m sure you can if it’s a household of 5. If they put all that rubbish in my bin (during the two week collection gap) it would completely fill it up with no room for mine.

How do you know they haven't and are waiting on it being delivered? But they're not doing that. They're seeing you've got space the night before the bins are emptied and putting a bag in. If it bothers you that much ask them to stop.

meadowlanee · 18/03/2024 13:46

Thanks for all the replies. I’ve attached a photo (a very bad quality one) but it shows you how much rubbish they have that’s it’s spilling out onto the pavement.

I don’t want to give them free use of my bin. They would completely fill it up given the chance.

I had this problem with my old next door neighbours and now have the same problem with my new next door neighbours it's annoying and rude. I'm moving soon so I'm trying not to get too annoyed about it coz I know I will be away from them soon but it is so entitled and leaves no room for my own refuse.

DangerousAlchemy · 18/03/2024 14:05

TuliLily · 18/03/2024 00:11

It's rude to use neighbours bins whether you've spoken to them or not. Unless you've checked it's ok

Exactly @TuliLily ! I occasionally message on our road WhatsApp group the night before a bin collection and ask if anyone has room in their brown bin etc. Would never put something in a neighbours bin without asking first!

I know you're moving @Anon543210 but have you said anything to your current neighbours? That would really annoy me!

Crumpleton · 18/03/2024 14:13

The letter of the law says that it is a form of anti social behaviour and technically illegal, as it's classed as fly-tipping. It is referred to in the waste industry as 'bin stuffing' and while many might think it's harmless and are unaware that it's a crime, it can be a nuisance to the neighbour in question.

Copied from Dr Google..

But, yes it would really get my back up.
If I had solid proof I'd take it back and return it stating that they'd "drop this so you thought you'd return it"

Samlewis96 · 18/03/2024 14:15

ooooohnoooooo · 18/03/2024 05:54

I'd be interested to understand why they have so much rubbish.

What is it all ?

We are a household of 5 abs have max 2 bags a week.

Hmm that wouldn't fit in our bins if you have 2 black bags a week. Bins take max 3 bags and collected the fortnightly

ancienticecream · 18/03/2024 14:17

Ooh, that would annoy me no end. I often put my final bin bags in my wheelie bin the morning of the collection.

I'd take their rubbish out and drop it back in front of their house. I'd also tell the council (not that they'd care much) and request an extra bin on their behalf.

DiscoBeat · 18/03/2024 14:17

It's not on. You are responsible for your own bin and what goes in it, which you can't do properly if you don't know the contents. Also if they have that much rubbish you can bet your life they don't recycle, which is important to me.

Frequency · 18/03/2024 14:18

Same. Our bin only takes 3-4 bags and is collected fortnightly. Usually, by the time the bin is emptied, I have 2-3 bags waiting to go in, as such as soon as it is empty it is overfilled again the same day.

JustAMummy3 · 18/03/2024 14:20

Ohh I might be the bad guy here, similar situation, next door is empty & up for sale, our collections are now every 3 weeks, a few times I’ve filled their bin & put out for collection too 😬
I put it back the next morning, is this super rude?
It’s been empty a year and I’ve done it a couple of times since Christmas 🙈

LlynTegid · 18/03/2024 14:21

If there are so many in the house and it is not commercial waste, is it an HMO without planning permission?
