To ask you how much sleep you usually get a night?

Just nosey. I know they say you need 8 hours and I’ve always taken this seriously but I’m coming to wonder whether it’s a bit like the guidance to do an hour of exercise a day, etc. Some days it’s just not possible!

How much sleep do you normally get on any given night and do you feel alright on it?

On average 4-5 hours, tired is my normal these days

8-10 hours a night so average 9 I guess. Sometimes 12 at the weekend.

I think a lot of people must underestimate how much sleep they get. I mean 5 hours is simply unsustainable.

I think those of us who are insomniacs know it's unsustainable.

And yet many of us are told to try a milky drink or a bath or exercise or listen to a podcast or take magnesium.

I've tried all of those in various combinations. None of them work.

5-7 hours of broken sleep usually. I have chronic pain so I'm always waking up at night, and my child and cat wake me up really early too. I'm kind of ok on it because I'm so used to it. It helps massively that I freelance and WFH so I don't need to appear energetic and I can just sit with my coffee. 😃

Sunnnybunny72 · 18/03/2024 08:13

About nine hours. Always broken sleep though (age).

indianrunnerduck · 18/03/2024 08:41

I agree with @MrsHamlet I think we are well aware & most insomniacs have probably tried every remedy or suggestion out there, from acupuncture to zen meditation, with milky drinks & cherry juice thrown in along the way, to try & help ourselves find a way back to a healthy sleep pattern. It's a very isolating condition as it's impossible for people to understand the despair of insomnia if they haven't experienced it personally.

The time I finally got prescribed zopiclone was the time I called the GP, hysterical, and said that I was so desperate that I'd seriously considered driving into a motorway bridge at high speed.

People think I'm just a bit tired.

4-5 hours up to when the dog wants to get on our bed, and then an hour or so on and off over the next 4 hours. She's getting on now and struggles to get on our bed, despite making a foam step to help her. She's taken to waking around 6 for wees, after being able to sleep until the alarm around 8. Utterly knackered the whole time.
If it's not the dog waking me, my own head likes to wake me up with nonsense.

familyissues12345 · 18/03/2024 10:20

On and off for about 7-8 hours. Usually fidgety for the first 2, then sleep through the the remaining 5-6.

I've tried going to bed later, thinking maybe I just don't need that much sleep, but I rarely make it through the evening without falling asleep watching tv as I'm knackered!

AuntieAntik · 18/03/2024 10:23

My fitbit informs me that I get on average between 6 and a half and 7 and a half hours a night. 16% of that is deep sleep. I used to need more sleep but as I age I manage in much less.

Mairzydotes · 18/03/2024 12:09

Probably between 6.5 and 8 hours . I'm always tired . I don't think I get a lot of restful, deep quality sleep.

SpongeBabeSquarePants · 18/03/2024 12:11

Solid 8 hours. I prioritise sleep to manage my mood and often go to bed early to catch up.

Not really. Go to bed at midnight, don't get to sleep til 1 or 2 am, then get up at 7 or 8am. That's pretty much my sleeping pattern.

Clingfilm · 18/03/2024 22:03

6.5 - 7.5 depending when I go to bed. 8.5 on the weekends but it makes me feel groggy.

I think I'd feel worse on a couple of nights of 9 hours a night than 5.5!

Guttedme · 18/03/2024 22:18

Used to be 5 ish hours due to a medication being out of whack but this was getting better. I spend Saturday and Sunday afternoons having naps probably not a good habit to get into.

Started on semaglutide but find that is giving me nightmares/oddest dreams so they need to do one in the next 3 weeks.

Tisfortired · 18/03/2024 22:21

6 ish but I have a bad sleeping 14 month old. I’m okay until 3/4 o’clock then I start to really crash.

Cockapoopoopoo · 18/03/2024 22:32

Usually 8 but function best on 9-10 hours. In an ideal world I'd get in bed at 10ish, read or scroll phone till 11 then wake up naturally at 8am. Doesn't work like that though
