Just nosey. I know they say you need 8 hours and I’ve always taken this seriously but I’m coming to wonder whether it’s a bit like the guidance to do an hour of exercise a day, etc. Some days it’s just not possible!

How much sleep do you normally get on any given night and do you feel alright on it?

I'm awful honestly, my husband calls me Thatcher because I can survive on very little sleep whereas he needs a solid 8-9 hours or he's a zombie.

In the week generally I get 4-6 hours, ish. Sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more. I tend to go closer to 6-7 at the weekend.

Then every now and then I have a "big sleep" where I just go into hibernation for 14 hours.

Hatty65 · 17/03/2024 20:51

Not enough. I'm awake every couple of hours. Need a wee a couple of times a night. Have bad dreams. My quality of sleep is really poor, I know.

I probably average about 6 hours broken sleep and I never feel rested.

AceofPentacles · 17/03/2024 20:52

Between 6-7.5, but I'm awake most nights for up to an hour due to peri insomnia .
I'm bone tired, I need 8-9 hours to feel normal.

fishonabicycle · 17/03/2024 20:53

Probably around 6. I'm usually quite tired. Last night I managed around 8 (broken) and felt so much better.

On a good night, 7 hours.
On a normal night, 5.
On a bad one, 3.

I feel like shit a lot.

I'm very similar to this. It's becoming more and more of a problem for me. I suffer terribly from sleep procrastination, meaning I ignore my cues to sleep, typically leading me to become more awake... I have to be up in six hours. I am awake. I am tired. Last night I had under 4 hours sleep.

I also need to do some sort of phone detox. Huge distraction.

My sleep has been a problem for years, but worsens with stress.

I have a menopausal, anxious, fairly medicated friend who has the opposite problem. She can get home from work at 4pm and basically go to bed and stay there! I could never.

I wonder if my lack of sleep or stress is causing my hair thinning.

Yearendjoy · 17/03/2024 20:54

Around 7 hours, weekdays and weekends. That's more than enough for me. I wake up feeling refreshed and can never sleep longer than this.

Rowgtfc72 · 17/03/2024 20:55

4 or 5 hours broken sleep
Cheers perimenopause.

pinkspeakers · 17/03/2024 20:56

Not sure. I don't monitor it. But I don't think most people need 8 hours. When I was younger (pre kids!) I slept through the night without waking was fine on 6 on a regular basis ( 4 was my minimum to function). These days I am in bed with light off for longer (light off my 11 usually, alarm at 6.30) but given the amount I wake it is probably still more like 6.

I struggled when I had very young children and was only getting 1-2 hours at a time. But as long as I get one 4 hour stretch then I'm grand!

Caroparo52 · 17/03/2024 20:57

If I go to bed earlier I awake earlier. No pressures when to wake up

Tessisme · 17/03/2024 20:58

About 5 or 6 hours. Not uninterrupted though. I'm awake for up to half an hour at least twice during the night. I've always been a terrible sleeper. I can't empty my brain and I can't stay asleep🙁

Tagyoureit · 17/03/2024 20:59

7-8 average
Good night 10, which means I've gone to bed with my dd and then fallen asleep
Bad night about 4 hours

I got a huawei band which also monitors how much I sleep which to be fair, has done wonders for my overall sleep "awareness".
Before i got the huawei band, I thought I was getting a crap amount of sleep so I thought I was always tired, turns out I actually do get more than I thought so I don't feel as tired.

Somuchgoo · 17/03/2024 21:00

4-6 usually. I co-sleep with my 4yo who has some health issues, and my quality of sleep is rubbish.

I'm knackered most of the time.

Sunshineclouds11 · 17/03/2024 21:00

5 hours broken sleep due to new baby.

Otherwise, 8. Could deffo do with 9/20

EveSix · 17/03/2024 21:00

I usually mark my last book around midnight. If I'm working in bed, I literally just put my marking pen down on the bedside table and turn off the light and get 6 hours. If I'm planning, it always takes longer, so maybe finishing at 1am and getting 5h. I could definitely do with more, am knackered all the time.

BCBird · 17/03/2024 21:02

5🙄 not enough

Allfur · 17/03/2024 21:03

8 hours, sleep is a priority for me

indianrunnerduck · 17/03/2024 21:04

About 4 hours of broken sleep. I can't remember when I last had a whole, restful night's sleep, it was probably over 10 years ago. I am very concerned about the potential effects on my health, especially cardiovascular and dementia health.

Diversion · 17/03/2024 21:05

On a few and far between good nights about 7 hours. On a bad night which are more common, somewhere between 3 and 5 hours. I worked sleepover shifts for almost 14 years so always slept (if I got any) with one ear open and have always attributed my poor sleep since to this.

DelilahBucket · 17/03/2024 21:10

These days 6-7 of broken sleep. Prime example last night, eventually fell asleep at 1, awake 4:15-5, back to sleep until 8:30 with two brief wake ups in between. Last night was a bit different, I try to go to bed around the same time every night. I don't tend to have any problems falling asleep, I just don't stay that way.
My sleep problems started when DH started snoring. I've rarely had a decent night since and we've been in separate beds for nearly two years now. The only time I've slept really well was a holiday in 2022. The room and bed were perfect and I slept solid for eight hours each night for a week. I came home feeling wonderfully refreshed. Not had that much sleep in one night since and as a result I'm permanently exhausted. It has impacted on my mental health hugely.

ChicagoBears · 17/03/2024 21:10

Pre-kids I could sleep for 10-12 hours a night, especially on the weekends, I loved sleep!

Post-DC, throughout the week I’ll get around 7 hours max but do make-up for it on weekends with 9 hours on average Sat and Sun.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/03/2024 21:12

3-4 over the course of eight hours in bed on a normal worknight, most of which is firstly a very long time in coming, then vaguely disturbed by pain, 6-7 with disturbances if I'm very lucky and have had more than a couple of days off. I have gone to work regularly on 3 and a half and multiple occasions have done it on zero.

According to my Fitbit, I sleep far more than I actually do - but I do agree with it that when I go to sleep, I'm almost instantly in deep sleep.

goingtotown · 17/03/2024 21:15

Average about 5. 11pm-2am & 4am-6am.

specialk9 · 17/03/2024 21:16

I average 6.5 hours which is normally broken and 2 out of my 3 children don't sleep through the night 90% of the time.

If I have 8 hours full sleep I feel exhausted when I wake up and it takes me a long time to feel awake. I hate it! Happened on Thursday and I felt so groggy.

RM2013 · 17/03/2024 21:18

6-8 prefer 8 as always feel tired when I wake up

AperolWhore · 17/03/2024 21:19

6.5 hours is my optimal sleep, asleep for 10pm and up
at 4:45am. Daughter sleeps 6:30-6:30 and I treasure my 2 hours before she wakes up.
