At the dinner table/in front of people.

A Proper Grown-Up understands the price of food and about food waste so would not throw it away. It's not unclean to lick a lid.

Hence the scraping..
I was obviously joking saying proper grown up..
it must be boring taking everything so seriously 😂

CarpetSlipper · 18/03/2024 06:21

It seems to be a normal thing to do but I feel repulsed by it.

It's more boring to not feel free to live life and just lick the lid!

I hate seeing this ...I use my spoon to scrape it if there's a lot of yogurt on the lid
My husband licks it ....I have to look away !!!

maddiemookins16mum · 18/03/2024 07:44

I recall a thread on here a few years ago - someone (adult) had licked a yoghurt lid (it may have been the pot itself) and was wanting to complain (possibly to Yeo Valley**) that it was too sharp.

** other yoghurt brands are available.

I don't anymore - just easier and cleaner to throw it away or scrape it with my spoon into the pot. It's one of the ways that I know I'm now a Proper Grown-Up.

Why is it ‘cleaner’ to throw a yogurt-y lid in the bin? TBH I find that yucky.

Only normal if you have zero table manners or awareness of others. It's gross.

BobnLen · 18/03/2024 07:56

In company I carefully scrape it off with a spoon if there is a lot. In private or just in DH's company, I lick it

Yes, it would smell and when you go to push the rubbish down so you aren't taking out an empty bag then you could get it on your hand.

Picklestop · 18/03/2024 08:57

No I wouldn’t lick the lid in front of anybody and I wouldn’t do it if I were alone either. I either use a spoon or more commonly, I let the dog lick it.

Abhannmor · 18/03/2024 09:01

It is obligatory. One has to think of those poor people in the recycle centre. If you don't lick it off they'll have to.

Borborygmus · 18/03/2024 13:47

Not licking the lid is abnormal.

In front of family - yes
In front of invited guests - no

Agree with this.

KreedKafer · 18/03/2024 13:51

I don't really think it's commonplace in front of people

Totally normal in front of your own immediate family

I can't really imagine a situation in which I'd be serving yogurts in the company of invited guests

If yoghurt is being eaten out of a pot in front of 'guests', Im guessing this isnt some posh dinner party and therefore lid licking is perfectly normal and acceptable.

In fact I would expect it so that it makes the disposing of the pot as clean as possible.

I agree completely.

I’d use a spoon but if I wanted to get rid of unwanted guests for good then I might lick it slowly while making eye contact.

I don't believe in keeping dogs as pets, so I always train mine up as working dogs by getting them to lick yoghurt lids on my behalf.
Pots too. The canine tongue is better adapted than the human tongue for accessing the last smears left at the bottom of the pot.

I must have working cats then. Guaranteed to clean egg or porridge from a bowl.
