Is it normal to lick the yoghurt off the lid

At the dinner table/in front of people.

OP posts:

Maybe people will be a bit more reserved at a dinner table with company but I'd guess the vast majority of people do it when enjoying a yoghurt by themselves.

Curlyblondefemale · 17/03/2024 20:18

My DH does it and I hate, I've also literally just told him that is completely absurd how often I have to say the sentence stop drinking your fking crisps!

SnapdragonToadflax · 17/03/2024 20:18

Yes of course I lick the lid in my own home, with my family. Probably wouldn't with anyone else.

I can't understand why people find it disgusting? It's not very polite obviously, but it's just the wrapper.

Peekaboobo · 17/03/2024 18:41

No it's revolting, not normal.

Its really normal 😂

Another here who finds it gross! In fact, reading this thread has made me feel yuk.
I don't know why I don't like it, I don't see it as anything like licking an icecream. You're licking a wrapper! A yogurt lid is part of the wrapping. Same as the pot is?
Unless you're licking an icecream wrapper, it's nowhere near the same.
I don't like to see anyone licking wrappers of any kind. No matter what the food is.
It's just as bad as when people lick their plates when they've finished a meal.
🤢

I went on a date years ago with a man who picked up his plate and licked it in a restaurant, this was after he'd sucked the bone from his lamb chops dry.. I declined a second date 🤮

I don’t understand. How do you drink crisps?

Slippersareindeedsexy · 17/03/2024 20:25

I haven't read the whole thread but I'd say it becomes abnormal when you start making patterns and trying to create numbers or letters before disposing of it. Or if you made appreciative noises.
I don't like how much time I've spent thinking about lid licking.

I guess when people tip the crumbs into their mouth!

That’s not drinking. Or unacceptable, really.

Namechangedforspooky · 17/03/2024 20:27

My 4yo likes to share hers with the cat. Do I win on grossness?!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 17/03/2024 20:28

Lid yoghurt is the best. I'd be offended in any setting from Buckingham Palace to the local bus stop if I saw someone discard a yoghurt lid without licking it. And I'm not sorry and I will never change my mind.

PrincessOfPreschool · 17/03/2024 20:30

Of course - "Licking the lid of life". But I also lick gravy off my plate which grosses my teens out (which is satisfying in itself). I will not waste delicious gravy.

spidermonkeys · 17/03/2024 20:40

Of course. I was a bit disappointed yesterday when I opened the lid so perfectly there was no yoghurt on the lid

Lovemycat2023 · 17/03/2024 20:46

Yes. My cat will do that in front of anyone, VIP or not.

soupfiend · 17/03/2024 20:47

I suppose in the classic MN vein 'have you sought therapy for this'

Its definitely you and not the lid lickers that have the problem.

Finding it hilarious how many posters find this “disgusting”. I’m guessing eating an ice lolly by licking it is fine but yoghurt lid isn’t? Bonkers.

I tend to suck a lolly rather than lick it

littlegrebe · 17/03/2024 20:50

Food waste is bad, therefore wasting the lovely thick lid yoghurt is also bad. Does the badness outweigh the rudeness of sticking your tongue out in public? I think we need one of those TikTok etiquette experts to weigh in.

Possibly the answer is that if presented with a pot of yoghurt with the lid still on at a fancy dinner party I would scrape off as much as I could with my spoon. It's not a dilemma I've ever come across, fortunately.

You tip the packet straight into your mouth. I 'drink' Wotsits. That way I don't get cheesy orange fingers! I only eat them in private though, as am aware this is questionable behaviour.

RageAgainstTheCoffeeMachine · 17/03/2024 21:08

I do and I don't care who see's me.

SpttyMaldoon · 17/03/2024 21:11

Sparklesocks · 17/03/2024 18:40

I’d probably do it in front of my family at the table.
But not in front of say…King Charles.

Of course not, as the King, he’d have first dibs!

Februaryfeels · 17/03/2024 21:12

I'd use a spoon. Licking makes me cringe

daisychain01 · 17/03/2024 21:16

DH always hands me his Muller lid.

he knows there'd be hell to pay if he didn't.

big cartons of Rachel's - probably the t-spoon would have to administered if people are over to stay.

home alone - sluuuuurrrrrrrp

Yearendjoy · 17/03/2024 21:18

Sunshineismyfavourite · 17/03/2024 20:06

My DH does and I hate it. Plenty yog in the pot hun.

I always think this. Are you that desperately hungry that you have to lick yoghurt off the wrapper? Makes me feel ill.

coldcallerbaiter · 17/03/2024 21:26

I would do it in front of everyone.
best bits are on lid and round the top edges, thick bits mmm
