At the dinner table/in front of people.

In front of family - yes
In front of invited guests - no

There’s nobody I wouldn’t do it in front of. It’s a lid, not a dick.

Context is I was just a bit grossed out by my husband doing it, but there were no royalty around, just DS had a nice yoghurt after tea and we had one too.
Also, I am easily grossed out and husband reckons that it is perfectly normal, I don't really think it's commonplace in front of people, but maybe I'm just round different people. As with any household difference of opinion I thought Mumsnet would give me a good measure.

It depends on how he’s doing it. If he’s slathering around on the lid with a big tongue then I can see why that would be off putting it. I do lick the lid but with small licks.

The Muller advert qualifies for the running in ‘most annoying advert of all time’, imo. Not sure why but it irritates me.

Annoying, yes, but the perfectly neat dot of yogurt on Nicole's nose was worse!

WaterWeasel · 17/03/2024 22:24

I don't do it and I would take a very dim view of anyone doing it in front of me.

ChimneySweepLiverpool · 17/03/2024 22:27

Alone - yes.
Not sure I would do it at a dinner table, but wouldn't mind if others did

moderate · 17/03/2024 22:28

Am I being overly judgmental to feel sorry for the sex lives of the people who are expressing disgust at their partners licking yoghurt from a lid?

Moonshine5 · 17/03/2024 22:36

It's hard no from me (with our without company).

OldBeyondMyYears · 17/03/2024 22:36

What a weird take to have on your husband licking a yogurt lid OP! It's so very normal as to not even be noteworthy 🤷‍♀️

And your husband is not 'people'...if you can't lick a sodding yoghurt lid in front of your spouse, there's something wildly wrong!!

How are you with him licking 'other things'?

Definitely a perfectly normal thing to do in front of your spouse and kids. I couldn't live with someone who didn't allow me a bit of yoghurt linkage.

I scrape it off the lid with a spoon. I’ve never licked a lid since I cut my tongue on a foil gold top from a milk bottle age 5 😂 It’s not something we do in our house, yoghurt is scraped off the lid with a spoon, no licking involved. I used to work with someone who licked the top of her yoghurt pot, the full staffroom used to look at her with cats bum faces.

PrincessOfPreschool · 17/03/2024 20:30

Of course - "Licking the lid of life". But I also lick gravy off my plate which grosses my teens out (which is satisfying in itself). I will not waste delicious gravy.

You lick plates? 🤢

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 18/03/2024 00:15

You can't scrape it all off with a spoon
Better just to lick it
It's not the outside of the wrapper. And I lick other wrappers if the chocolate has melted a little for example

And no wasting the last bits of crisps either

Lots of male guests would probably interpret that as a come on.

I assumed that was what she meant! Scaring them away by making a blatant pass. I think most of my houseguests would scarper if I unexpectedly threw myself at them.

LuciaPillson · 18/03/2024 00:24

I've got yoghurt pots in the house that have it written on the top that I'm allowed to lick the other side of the lid. I mean that's permission from the actual yoghurt, surely that counts for something.

GoosieLucie · 18/03/2024 00:27

I'm quite possibly a little bit odd but I really dislike the very thought of licking something, let alone actually doing it. I eat yogurt every day, on my own, and I never lick the lid, though I do scrape it with a spoon if there's a lot of it on the lid because it would be wasteful not to. I don't like the sounds made by licking and slurping.

RiotC · 18/03/2024 02:49

I mean I didn't chastise him or anything!
We just had a conversation about whether it was a thing. I do find it a bit ick, but it's not like I've put a household ban on it!
We just weren't sure which of our opinions was the more common/normal.

Hilariously, I posted on here a couple of years ago about how some of his table manners gave me the ick and overwhelmingly the response was LTB and that I shouldn't marry him!

Very glad I did not heed that and to those of you "concerned" that me being a bit funny about table manners might affect my sex life. Fear not.

But also I know I'm odd about table manners, hence the checking.

I never do as DM told me I would cut my tongue on the lid's foil edges.

It's always put me off, I use a spoon.

HollyKnight · 18/03/2024 04:48

Spouses dont count. Mine has seen me lick my plate.

Dustybarn · 18/03/2024 05:32

Acceptable if you are aged 5 or younger.

Natsku · 18/03/2024 05:56

I always lick the lid. I also lick the bowl when I have a bowl of ice cream. I refrain from licking plates and bowls when around non-family members though, as much as it pains me to waste those last delicious drops.

merrymelodies · 18/03/2024 06:02

I don't like thick yogurt so no, I wouldn't. Whether or not it's normal to lick the lid, I have no idea.

Kalevala · 18/03/2024 06:08

KarmaCaramello · 17/03/2024 18:49

I don't anymore - just easier and cleaner to throw it away or scrape it with my spoon into the pot. It's one of the ways that I know I'm now a Proper Grown-Up.

A Proper Grown-Up understands the price of food and about food waste so would not throw it away. It's not unclean to lick a lid.

Wisenotboring · 18/03/2024 06:10

I imagine it's pretty normal...my husband does it to annoy me! I personally find it a it gross.
