At the dinner table/in front of people.

I don't anymore - just easier and cleaner to throw it away or scrape it with my spoon into the pot. It's one of the ways that I know I'm now a Proper Grown-Up.

I'm 62. Good to know I'm not a Proper Grown-Up yet. I always lick the yoghurt off the lid. Wouldn't do this in front of relative strangers, but then I wouldn't be eating yoghourt out of a pot in front of them anyway.

LauderSyme · 17/03/2024 18:52

When I was a schoolkid with flaky teenage 'friends' one of them disowned me for a while for the crime of licking my yoghurt lid in front of her.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 17/03/2024 18:53

What's the context?

TeenLifeMum · 17/03/2024 18:53

Finding it hilarious how many posters find this “disgusting”. I’m guessing eating an ice lolly by licking it is fine but yoghurt lid isn’t? Bonkers.

TeenLifeMum · 17/03/2024 18:53

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g being a proper grown up sounds really dull, definitely one to avoid.

RiotC · 17/03/2024 18:57

Context is I was just a bit grossed out by my husband doing it, but there were no royalty around, just DS had a nice yoghurt after tea and we had one too.
Also, I am easily grossed out and husband reckons that it is perfectly normal, I don't really think it's commonplace in front of people, but maybe I'm just round different people. As with any household difference of opinion I thought Mumsnet would give me a good measure.

I shall avert my eyes and clutch my pearls quietly though, as I think I'm in a minority!

I always lick the yoghurt off the lid - it is the best part of a yoghurt.

I wouldn't be ripping open a yoghurt at a dinner party so the question would never arise. I do it at work most days and nobody has banned me whereas they have banned my peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches, so I know they have no problem telling me I'm making them feel sick.

In front of family - yes
In front of invited guests - no

Yup.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/03/2024 19:03

Yes, simple as no explanation need.

DoubleBingo · 17/03/2024 19:06

I have never not licked the lid and I've eaten yogurts in all different locations and in front of the world. If someone had an issue with this I would think they were joking. Its no different to licking an ice cream.

PossumintheHouse · 17/03/2024 19:10

It's fine, let him lick away. God, if my partner cottoned on to the fact I was disgusted by his yoghurt licking, that would be it. He'd buy the extra thick, creamy ones on purpose.

Northernsouloldies · 17/03/2024 19:40

ditalini · 17/03/2024 18:43

I use my spoon to scrape the lid if I'm eating in front of people who might be affronted by lid licking.

Not missing out on that liddy goodness.

I wouldn't blink if King Charles licked his lid in front of me.

If king Charles can lick his own lid that's quite a feat.🤔

Alicewinn · 17/03/2024 18:42

No it’s grim

Why? What’s grim about it?

cardibach · 17/03/2024 19:43

PeloMom · 17/03/2024 18:47

I let my 5yo old do it (at home). For adults I except them to scrape it with a spoon.

Why do you expect that?

DuckonaBike · 17/03/2024 19:46

It’s the best bit!I have a long standing arrangement with DD1 that every time she eats a yoghurt, she passes me the lid to lick. I can’t quite remember how this started, but I’m quite happy about it.

Thedogscollar · 17/03/2024 19:48

There is nothing grim or revolting about it.
We lick ice cream out of a cone or from a stick so zero difference.
Obviously we wouldn't be eating yoghurt at a dinner party or at a Royal dinner so the comparisons are unrealistic.
Only here on MN, well that's a whole different scenario.

Berlinlover · 17/03/2024 19:49

Only normal if you’re aged five or younger.

CranfordScones · 17/03/2024 19:51

At the dinner table / in front of people - absolutely not!

The dog would never forgive me.

Yes. Also my husband is not ‘people’.

MohairTortoise · 17/03/2024 20:01

Another here who finds it gross! In fact, reading this thread has made me feel yuk.
I don't know why I don't like it, I don't see it as anything like licking an icecream. You're licking a wrapper! A yogurt lid is part of the wrapping. Same as the pot is?
Unless you're licking an icecream wrapper, it's nowhere near the same.
I don't like to see anyone licking wrappers of any kind. No matter what the food is.
It's just as bad as when people lick their plates when they've finished a meal.
🤢

2thumbs · 17/03/2024 20:02

What on earth is wrong with licking yoghurt from a lid? I’m drawing a blank as to how anybody could have an issue with it

Sunshineismyfavourite · 17/03/2024 20:06

My DH does and I hate it. Plenty yog in the pot hun.

YoureALizardHarry11 · 17/03/2024 20:14

I always lick the lid, as do most people I’ve come across. I probably wouldn’t do it in front of certain people but my family/friends, yes. I’m never in a position to be licking yogurt lids in front of anyone else outside of family or friends though 🤣
