Threads being posted again? Going crazy?

AvonleaHeart · 17/03/2024 03:52

Am I going nuts or are threads popping up that are exactly the same as ones posted months or even years ago, but just with a current date???

I feel like there's been several now where I am almost positive I have read it before.

I saw someone ask this on one of the threads and OP denied it...

Maybe I am imagining things as not sure what the motivation would be for doing it.

YABU - You are imagining things
YANBU - I've noticed this too

I was also thinking I've read this thread recently Grin

I've noticed it too. I think it's a mix of different people with the same problems, the same OPs coming back as they struggle to move the problem on IRL, trolls reposting their own threads/others old threads and possibly yes a bit of MN at work.

I think you are right and it's probably a mix of all of that!

And as for the people saying it isn't true because I'm not linking the threads...

Well I didnt think I would need to prove my case haha.
I didn't even know if I was imagining things which is why I asked.

I just had the thought and clearly other people have had the same one.

It's no biggie 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve definitely seen this. I’ve been in mumsnet for a good years now, and I have definitely seen the posts being reposted

Thank you!

It must be a thing as there's another thread about it and several of us here who have had the same feelings.

Who/why its happening is another story 😹

It’s not, though, that’s not an example.

As MNHQ say on the thread:

Hi SonyaBoat and Westfacing, we think it's likely to be a coincidence that there was recently a similar thread to the one you've flagged. We've no reason at all to be suspicious of the OP, and about a dozen people on the thread have said how sad they were when they heard that Terry Wogan had died, so his name clearly comes up a lot on threads like this.

There are no examples because it’s probably not happening!

shoppingshamed · 17/03/2024 06:27

This, how come no one can give an example, even a description of what the thread was about so that people could check

There is loads of repititiion of questions or situations but a word for word same thread would be easily proved by a simple seach

Exactly!

Mothership4two · 17/03/2024 07:41

I'm not the OP but I can't remember the exact instances it has happened (will have a think). I usually post on the thread "have you posted about this before?". Obviously the same subjects are going to crop up again and again on MN, but sometimes particular details crop up that sound familiar.

It’s not nice to post ‘have you posted about this before’ unless you can link to the thread. It puts a lot of OPs off from responding.

Bobbotgegrinch · 17/03/2024 10:46

There's a really easy way to prove this. Just copy the first paragraph of the thread, chuck quotes around it and stick it in Google. It'll search for the exact sentence and if you get a result from years ago, bobs your uncle.

I bet you won't though, it's most likely just people having very similar experiences.

Mothership4two · 17/03/2024 11:01

Well we'll just have to agree to disagree @Untethered. It wouldn't bother me and wouldn't put me off responding. If I could exactly remember the previous post I wouldn't be asking as I'd know. Occasionally the OPs respond telling me they have but have changed the wording or where they have posted for traffic because they didn't get many responses. No-one has been offended so far.

Hadjab · 17/03/2024 11:52

Untethered · 17/03/2024 05:27

No, it’a not happening OP and the reason I know this is because people who post threads saying this is happening NEVER have a single example to link to.

Umm nope. I don’t post examples because it’s not that deep. I read threads here that I’ve read before. I did check it and it was a duplicate, but with a new date. Can I remember which one it was? Nope, because I have a life! I’ve always assumed it’s MN reposting threads for engagement. I don’t particularly care if they are or not, but threads are definitely being reposted.

No, they’re not. Because no one has ever posted an example.

TulipCat · 17/03/2024 06:45

Once you've been on MN for a while, it gets very samey. That's all it is - the same things crop up over and over again. I respond to far fewer threads than I did in my early MN years.

This is it. It's a parenting forum so every generation in the last 50 years are dealing with the same things apart from issues of parenting and the internet which evolved more quickly.

This . Often wondered if it’s mumsnet reposting also .

spearmintmilkshake · 17/03/2024 21:39

It's the same threads, but the dates have changed (so you can't prove anything, which is crazymaking) - therefore it has to be MN reposting.

Stuckinthemiddle7890 · 17/03/2024 22:41

Don't the old ones pop up when someone new comments even when it's old... I've seen old threads come up and every one I've seen has a new comment posted (not by the op) but I'm sure this can't be what you're all talking about..

When that happens, the initial date of the OP does not change.

IwishMaxTheriothadanOnlyfans · 17/03/2024 22:54

Terry Wogan's dead??!! Fucking hell!

Datgal · 17/03/2024 22:54

I noticed this yesterday/earlier today. I remember reading it, thinking I've read the exact same thing a while ago! Looked at the date posted as I thought it was the same one either being updated or someone not realising it's a zombie thread or something. Weird! Like exactly the same wording. Can't remember what it was about now! But I'll try and find it ...

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/03/2024 23:01

Sometimes it's people who didn't like the answers they got the first time, had the thread deleted 'for privacy reasons' and then repost with a very slightly altered OP.

I normally try to assume that it's somebody in a similar position, but the massive (over) reaction some responses receive makes it clear they're still pissed off from the 1st/2nd/3rd time round because they're still not getting the answers they want.

Newphonnearlythere · 17/03/2024 23:11

Thank goodness, I'm not going mad or senile then. Same posts as a few months ago, different name and date. Finding one to give as an example has proved too hard tonight but tbh I just thought, MN not getting much traffic so they re-gurgitated a few that had gained much interest previously.

If that's the case, we're onto it and not all gaga!

shoppingshamed · 18/03/2024 05:45

Why does it have to be MN posting? Literally anyone can copy any OP and repost it as many times as many times as they like under as many different names as they like

The more vague posta without any actual evidence the more intriguing this is

Loubelle70 · 18/03/2024 05:53

YANBU.
ive noticed and said as much. The wedding one yesterday, then another, and another over the last week.

Because a thread that one remembers from a few weeks, months, or years ago - not a particularly interesting thread, not one that has ever gained traction - suddenly appears with a new date on it, weeks, months, or years later.
