People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

I always have my card but rarely my phone.

Although can't use it to pay so that's a moot point!

I have no interest in being able to pay with my phone!

Flatleak · 16/03/2024 16:55

I have an almost identical phone case to teen DD. It's not a wallet type one, it's silicon I think, just the one that covers the back and the edge of the phone. Easy to put a note or a card in it

If you keep your card in the back of your phone case then every time you tap your phone you're paying twice.

leeknen · 16/03/2024 16:56

I'm in London but I always carry some cash and a card. It's just always in my small handbag so I don't think about having to take anything extra. I'd never leave the house without it even to do the school run, I never know if I might want to pop in a shop on the way back. I don't use my phone to pay for anything as it's quite old and battery life is unreliable. I almost never use cash if I can pay by card, but there have definitely been a few places where I've needed cash even in London.

No, you're not. Contactless payment systems can't take payments from 2 sources for the same transaction.

I’m with you. Mainly because I work in retail and sick of people being dicks to me and my colleagues for things that are out of our control. Like what is happening in Sainsburys today.

I agree. If you can put a phone in your pocket you can squeeze a card in too.
And if you really can’t be arsed then don’t complain when things don’t go your way.

I feel like the more pertinent question here should be "why don't people just not act like total bellends"?!

If I'm in a shop and electronics go down so I can't pay using my phone then it's simply me who is inconvenienced, I wouldn't be in any way frustrated or annoyed at staff, because I'm not a total prick!

Absolutely!

Yeah cards and cash are old fashioned..till you can't make a purchase with your chosen bit of tech.

And oddly, in the Olden Days, nothing ever happened that prevented you paying for your groceries in cash. These days a simple power cut leaves people behaving like gibbering idiots.
I personally don't feel fully dressed on a trip to the stores without my shoulder strap hand bag, which means I always have cards and cash and phone as well as tissues, eyebrow pencil, ballpoint pens, ibuprofen, sticking plasters and other things without which life is impossible.

If the systems are down, how would having a bank card help? 🤷‍♀️. Using a phone and using a card is the same technology.

did you...not read the OP?
Sometimes, as in the exact scenario she described, that's not the case

This! The issue is nothing to do with people not carrying bank cards 🤦‍♂️

I take my bank card but rarely take my phone if I am just popping to the shops. How old fashioned am I?

SabreIsMyFave · 16/03/2024 17:04

??? Confused Almost everyone I know carries their bank card. Also, as pps have said, they couldn't use them anyway if 'the system is down.'

I carry about £100 cash - always - because my debit card has failed me a number of times, and left me looking like a twat on the end of the checkout. Sometimes, it's my own fault - not enough money in current account, sometimes it's my bank, sometimes it's the shop at fault.

I have no credit cards, and no banking on my phone, and have no intention of getting any of these.

Of course you’re not! 😂

Ponderingwindow · 16/03/2024 17:05

I redesigned my bag recently. I’ve got my id and one card easily accessible. Everything else is in a really minimalist wallet at the very bottom of my bag. So I still carry them, just not as easy to grab. I also still carry around a bit of cash just in case.

It’s sad that so many people spend their weekend in Sainsbury’s

Why? That’s when most people are off work and have time to shop. Do you send your staff to Waitrose to do yours?

Flatleak · 16/03/2024 17:06

@PrimitivePerson you're right I was thinking of the tube card clash warning!

tacosforbreakfast · 16/03/2024 17:06

I keep cash in the back of my phone case so at least I could get essentials in this situation.

ohdamnitjanet · 16/03/2024 17:07

BobnLen · 16/03/2024 14:48

you can just ditch the trolley and go elsewhere

You’re obviously just here to be a pathetic pain in the arse.

SheepAndSword · 16/03/2024 17:08

@ohdamnitjanet 😆

Nobody would spend their entire weekend in a supermarket (unless staff??) but yeah when you gotta shop you gotta shop. Or starve.

Probably not quite as bad as me.

I never take my phone unless I have a specific reason to do so.

I still see it as a means of communication to be used from the comfort of your own home!

With the advantage of it can be taken out & about if necessary-oh & it takes pics!

Tiredalwaystired · 16/03/2024 17:10

I actually agree with you, OP. I always encourage my kids to take both, especially as there has been a spate of mobile phone thefts here recently - both out of peoples hands and from cafe tables. The thought of them being without any means of getting home worries me greatly.

kitsuneghost · 16/03/2024 17:11

I tend to take my cards rather than my phone as my card holder fits in my pocket better. It usually has an emergency tenner in it

ancienticecream · 16/03/2024 17:11

I left my purse at my parents' house for three weeks before I noticed it was missing. I rarely take my purse out, even though it fits in my back pocket. I don't have a bag, either.

SabreIsMyFave · 16/03/2024 17:11

@BobnLen · Today 14:43

It’s sad that so many people spend their weekend in Sainsbury’s

Who has said they spend all weekend in Sainsburys? Confused

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 16/03/2024 17:11

I never carry my bag anymore but keep bank cards in my purse, because I don't always trust myself to be able to make Apple Pay work or my phone to suddenly lose its charge - which has happened for some unfathomable reason. Also carry it on the off chance I need to get cash. I was scarred by the experience of notbeing able to buy the most beautiful looking brownies at a farmers market as they were only taking cash and I had no means of getting any!

tittybumbum · 16/03/2024 17:18

So OP can we presume you always carry a ton of cash also? Otherwise you are a bit hypocritical
