People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Eh, what? Are you replying to the right list? I’ve not said anything about anyone not using cash or cards or whatever.

I was replying to people saying we should always carry cash.

Don’t quote me then and reply to me! I was saying what I do.

There is always cashback in shops.

They don't actually all do it now.

Imagine being so disorganised you've let your car get that low. If you're that disorganised no way would you have thought to take cash out with you.

Being so low on fuel is not always about being disorganised, many people live pay day to pay day and don't have enough money to keep the car topped up. Some get to work and home again on the day before pay day on fumes. Not everyone has spare cash.

Because why carry two things (card & phone) when you can simply carry one (phone). Currently, the amount of times contactless payment isn’t available is vanishingly small. A card isn’t necessary 99% of the time.

If you have a wallet type phone case you can take your card and your phone. All bases covered .

Bearbookagainandagain · 16/03/2024 16:35

Welcome to the world, you have met a twat.

I have been using Google pay on my phone for 2-3 years and in that time I have issues twice out of hundreds of purchases I've made. One was today when trying to go to Sainsbury, they told me "cash only" at the entrance, I said "ok" and went somewhere else.

BashfulClam · 16/03/2024 16:20

its not half as bad as money. I never carry money and it’s never a problems the last time I carried it I lost £40 somewhere.

Shops and warehouses are full of cockroaches and rodents.

You don't normally see them in shops during normal opening hours, but they're there.

Take hand sanitiser with you and use it when you get back to your car, or as soon as you've parked your trolley. Wash your hands with soap and hit water when you get home.

katseyes7 · 16/03/2024 16:39

I’m with you. Mainly because I work in retail and sick of people being dicks to me and my colleagues for things that are out of our control. Like what is happening in Sainsburys today.
This. I work on a checkout, and the number of people who just assume that they can always pay using their phone is unbelievable.
They don't realise that if their shopping costs more than a certain amount (I think it's £250) they can't pay with their phone. Or if the systems go down.
Or, in the situation where you've used your account a lot, you'll be asked to put your card in the card reader and pay using chip and pin. Which doesn't work if you don't have your card with you.
It's a security measure implemented by the banks. Annoying, but it stops your account being cleaned out if you happen to lose your card, it will only work contactless for a particular number of transactions.
We had a couple in our store at Christmas who had two trolleys full of food/drink, and assumed they could just pay using their phone. But their shopping came to nearly £400. Neither of them had thought to bring a credit/debit card with them.
We had to put their trolleys in the chiller while he went home for a card.
It's always the fault of the person on the till, though. Apparently....

Contactless/phone pay requires Wi-Fi so if it's down/slow then often chip and still will still work. Contactless also can cause double charges because Wi-Fi goes down during the completion process (ie hold the first amount until the till completes the sale and if it doesn't complete it can take 48 hours to clear back to your account)

Contactless on the phone does not use wifi or data. It uses the same technology as the contactless chip on your bank card.

reluctantbrit · 16/03/2024 16:41

I have my debit and my credit card in my wrap around mobile cover.

For years I also had always at least £20 in cash with me.

DD has her debit card in her coat or if she doesn't take her coat she puts it in her mobile case.

And - if it was just Sainsbury which had the problem, the cash machines they normally have somewhere will still work and you can access your cash to pay for your shopping.

Cornflakelover · 16/03/2024 16:41

I have a case on my phone where I keep some cash normally 100 quid in in twenties and my cards
I always have cash in my purse and car as well
I prefer to pay cash wherever I can

DillDanding · 16/03/2024 16:42

The day I start using a wallet type phone case will be a cold day in hell. They scream OAP. Nothing wrong with being an OAP, but I’m not there yet.

katseyes7 · 16/03/2024 16:42

Actually, there isn't. Tesco stopped doing cashback during the pandemic, and l was told that other supermarkets did too.
I don't know if the others have reinstated it, but Tesco haven't, unless you go to Customer Services and pay for something there. The checkouts can't do it.

Fizbosshoes · 16/03/2024 16:43

This happened to me recently in tesco. Ypu couldnt oay via contactless (eg phone) but chip n pin was working.

I am a dinosaur and usually have a purse but even if I just take my phone, i have a card or cash (eg a tenner) in the case, I don't have to remember 2 things

Waitingfordoggo · 16/03/2024 16:43

Not sure if it’s been sorted now, but there was a total IT failure at my local large Sainsbury’s earlier today, so they could only take cash (and the onsite ATM had run out of cash by lunchtime). I suspect most of us would have come unstuck in that scenario.

katseyes7 · 16/03/2024 16:43

You don't even need a 'wallet type phone case'. I see a lot of my customers who keep their cards in the back of their 'wrap around' phone cover.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/03/2024 16:46

@shoppingshamed

And?

And what?

ScarletWitchM · 16/03/2024 16:47

I hardly ever take my card and never have cash - I live in London and it’s almost never needed. I went to a Sainsbury’s local today, they said about the problems so I just went to Tesco instead - it’s easier in a big city to do this though and when I leave the city I do take my cards & a small amount of cash as I know it’s different

Edited

I have an almost identical phone case to teen DD. It's not a wallet type one, it's silicon I think, just the one that covers the back and the edge of the phone. Easy to put a note or a card in it

Because I can't have my purse and bank cards out with me at work but I have my phone and can use contactless to pay for food etc.
it's clearly not staffs fault but I was in Sainsbury's today and there was no signage or staff telling customers of the issues it was only apparent on check out.

The Sainsburys where I work did, I spent 2 hours this afternoon stood by the front door saying "cash only today" to every customer who walked in, I now have a sore throat, some customers nodded saying they had heard the news, some read the large sign stood in the doorway before they reached me, some dodged round the sign then looked amazed at my words, some had a bit of a moan and some completely blanked me, presumably they were the ones who then had a go at the checkout staff when they couldn't pay. My favourite was the gentleman who on hearing my message said "Ooh Laa Laa" and continued in.

Wexone · 16/03/2024 16:47

No cash here. its a faff to try and find a cash machine. anywhere local to me that had taken a stance of cash only have either closed or relented and taken a card machine. one friend of a pub that now takes card said they get people in for a drink realise its only cash and stay for one drink before moving on now takes card people staying longer. my purse has been stolen three times so now its either my phone or watch. its far easier. even the local street flower sellers have sum up machines now. its the way things are gone. took money out to buy something in a charity shop and bloody machine charged me 2.50e for taking 20e. I was like fick that. no issues with paying by card. however being rude to staff is not on

Animatic · 16/03/2024 16:49

If I'm out for a quick coffee or to drop DC to school I just have my mobile and a single key. If I pass by grocery shop otw and the system is down then not a biggie.
But I would normally carry 1 cc/dc and £5/£10 note/some coins if I venture out further afield. That's my back-up just in case.

You can get the Apple MagSafe ones, I have a couple that stick on the back of the phone if I didn't want my purse but that is quite rare. I don't think only OAPs have them

sleepyscientist · 16/03/2024 16:50

Because in this day and age you expect the card server to be fully back up with a seamless bounce to multiple data centres if one goes down. The problem isn't people going digital it's the infrastructure not being updated! We had a major issue at work with a Microsoft update so imagine these companies are experiencing the same, luckily our IT fixed it quickly.

I believe that 100%. People don't listen, they don't take notice.
Where l work, we actually ran out of 'bags for life' a few weeks ago. One man kicked off saying we 'should have put a notice on the door'.
But l guarantee if we had, nobody would have read it, or actually processed the information.
It's the same on a Sunday when we close at 4pm. We put out tannoy calls 30, 15, 10, and 5 minutes before we shut. And every week, without fail, people are wandering round after we've closed, and they'll say "Oh! I thought it you shut at half past....."
People don't pay attention, or assimilate information.
