People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Usually have 6 credit cards, cash and phone. Always prepared

gingercat02 · 16/03/2024 14:33

Lots of Santander ATM are contactless now, but I'm not sure about others so I can get cash without a card. Often nip out with just my phone and car fob

LaWench · 16/03/2024 14:34

Sounds like stupid customers being irate. If systems are down, they are down 🤷‍♀️.
I never carry anything other than my phone these days, I hate cash and completely accept that if they dont take cards or my phone is dead then I can't pay, so be it. However my phone is also my car key so I keep it charged.

Sanch1 · 16/03/2024 14:35

Here's something controversial, sometimes I don't even take my phone because my Apple Watch as all the functionality of my phone, I can buy things, listen to music, phone and text people when my phone is at home and I'm at the shop 😱 I'm not a dick though so if in the very unlikely scenario contactless wasn't working I'd not berate the shop staff 😊

Pushmepullyou · 16/03/2024 14:22

Because I often don’t take my handbag if I’m just popping out to the shop. Just my phone in my pocket. Apple (and presumably Android) pay don’t ask you to enter your card. Obviously in the case of total IT failure i’d be going home disappointed, but them’s the breaks!

Exactly this. It's the risk I take when I go to the shops with just my phone, and I'm happy taking that risk.

I've not routinely taken my bank card out with me in years now and it's never been a problem yet. I've never once had to enter my pin when using apple pay.

If the systems are down, how would having a bank card help? 🤷‍♀️. Using a phone and using a card is the same technology.

I'm not a technology expert but recently in Tesco cintactless wasn't working but chip and pin was so it can definitely happen

Madwife123 · 16/03/2024 14:36

There hasn’t been a single time that my Apple Pay hasn’t worked and my card has. If the system is down, it’s down full stop.

Also Apple Pay never asks you to inset the card or for the PIN number so there is simply no need to carry a card that could be lost or stolen when I have full access via my watch permanently round my wrist.

Times move on.

DeeCeeCherry · 16/03/2024 14:37

I carry my phone, and most times £10/20 in cash. Thats it. Why should I carry bank card as an extra when I dont need to? Its 2024 not 2004.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/03/2024 14:37

I always carry one chip and pin card and an emergency £10 in the back of my phone case, takes no space and I still can just carry my phone.

As for if the systems are down, how would having a bank card help? 🤷‍♀️ Using a phone and using a card is the same technology.

There was no contactless service in Sainsburys this morning but I was still able to pay with chip and pin.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 16/03/2024 14:37

Contactless/phone pay requires Wi-Fi so if it's down/slow then often chip and still will still work. Contactless also can cause double charges because Wi-Fi goes down during the completion process (ie hold the first amount until the till completes the sale and if it doesn't complete it can take 48 hours to clear back to your account)

Contactless wasn't working, C&P was in my Sainsburys.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 16/03/2024 14:40

I've just remembered as well - I can use my banking app on my phone to get cash out of the cash machine.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/03/2024 14:40

Limited pockets

I forgot.

Didn't want to carry them.

3 reasons why I don't always carry a card.

That's not corredt, WiFi not required for contactless, it's NFC that's used for contactless

DH was also in Sainsbury he said some woman was shouting at a cashier because the contact less wasn't working and the girl burst into tears and it was a whole hoha because the phone wouldn't scan. imagine being so reliant on technology that you can't pay and then you make young women cry. just take a back up card !

It’s funny when despite all evidence to the contrary people can still be convinced that they’re correct.

Sainsbury's and Tesco deliveries cancelled over technical issues

The supermarket apologises to customers as Tesco also faces technical issues with online orders.

Sirzy · 16/03/2024 14:41

I have been in a supermarket when the systems went down meaning they couldn’t process payments at all.

there is no perfect system!

i rarely take cash or card out with me, I use my phone. If I can’t use my phone then it’s not the end of the world I go elsewhere

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/03/2024 14:42

Precipice · 16/03/2024 14:24

People should carry cash.

I haven't carried cash for years.

PensePotter · 16/03/2024 14:42

What's wrong with carrying cards ?
I carry credit, bank and cash with me always, it's no big deal. I want to have options so wont go to places where only cards are used. Technology has gone too far in some ways, and for instance I would not scan a QR code for parking (my friend just got scammed with a fake one in an NCP car park and then noticed afterwards monthly amounts being taken from her account).

I use my phone for the way it suits me and don't have my 'life' details stored there. My choice but each to their own.

BobnLen · 16/03/2024 14:43

It’s sad that so many people spend their weekend in Sainsbury’s

You wouldn’t have got much out of Sainsbury’s today then. 🙄

@KateReddy Sorry if you were unable to read my comment correctly.

I stated that I have never had an experience where my Apple Pay hasn’t worked and my card did. I didn’t say these things don’t happen simply that u have never experienced this. Therefore I consider the risk very low. I have however had bank cards lost, stolen and even cloned once. So I consider this a higher risk than the risk of being unable to use Apple Pay.

Crunchymum · 16/03/2024 14:44

I don't have Apple Pay (or the android equivalent) so I rely on cards and cash.

Not sure if I'm making this up but I'm still on 4g, and often don't get reception / service on supermarkets and restaurants so I've always assumed I wouldn't be able to use my phone to pay?
