People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Differentvbut just as possible to steal your physical keys or break a window

It's much harder to do that. Breaking a modern double glazed window is physically very difficult and takes time, and also makes noise and draws attention. There's electronic devices that will hack digital locks in seconds and open them completely silently.

i suppose that’s why burglary is so rare these days?

Hopefully won’t become an everyday occurrence for the country once these modern locks come into mainstream.

If you take sensible security precautions, you can prevent it. Most burglaries are pretty opportunist. Using a digital lock is incredibly stupid on that front, keyless entry systems on cars are completely unfit for purpose and far easier to defeat that older systems that needed a key.

Ah I see. That’s why car theft used to be a really rare occurrence until keyless entry. Practically unheard off 😂

What you mean a digital lock with a camera on it and also sets of an alarm when hacked? Mmm can see why the robbers would want a go at that

Hackers who know what they're doing wouldn't have a problem with that at all.

Don't you think people take sensible security precautions with other types of key then? Why are these extra preventative measures more acceptable than taking preventative measures for other types of key? If you need to take extra precautions than they are no more or less fit for purpose than other types of key.

I used to be able to open other cars with the key to my Ford Escort back in the day when they were just physical keys. Can't get easier than that!

BobnLen · 17/03/2024 10:13

I wouldn't be relying on a digital lock, a lot of the digital stuff I already use isn't that good like Hive, those Ring things, etc

Is carrying a paper map "old-fashioned"? Maybe, but it's 100% dependable
Quite.
Paper maps, books, cash never run out of battery or signal!

Edited

I still carry a paper A-Z when I'm around London. Opens out double paged and you can see context of where you are instead of couple of inches of screen.

The day I start using a wallet type phone case will be a cold day in hell. They scream OAP. Nothing wrong with being an OAP, but I’m not there yet

What an utter charmer you sound, pp.

And a locksmith or accomplished burglar can get through a physical lock with no problem at all.

Allfur · 17/03/2024 10:15

Mrsdanvers, you can change the size of the map on your screen so you can see as much or little as you like

YABU and don’t seem to understand ApplePay or the normal two sticker method of price reductions.

Nothing shouts vulnerable distracted tourist like getting out a giant physical map in a city. I would never do this it would make you such a target.

And you're constrained by screen size, that doesn't get bigger. I once stood with a mate in South Kensington, both of us peering at our screens to find the place we were looking for. Checked it on the A-Z when I got home and saw immediately where it was in relation to where we had been standing - and paper A-Z would have saved us 20 cold frustrating minutes.

Works for me. Of course I means I'm not a minimalist up to date with all the latest tech type looking down scornfully on the Luddites, but I never have been. I can live with that.

katseyes7 · 17/03/2024 10:28

I had elderly customers shout their PIN as they are punching numbers “5…3….1….0”
That's the one!

And standing peering at your phone trying to work out where you are doesn't, of course.

I'm not a tourist, I live there, and in 55 years I've never been a target. A-Z isn't a giant physical map, it's a book.

You know on google maps you can just type in where you need to go and it will show you the route? A preference is fine but it sounds like you’re claiming technology doesn’t work when you don’t actually know how to use it.

I don't understand Apple Pay either, nor Apple anything else. It's not compulsory to hand large amounts of your money to Apple; other systems are available and most people I know use Android - this is the only place I've seen so many iphone users.

So does holding a phone

katseyes7 · 17/03/2024 10:33

Read somewhere that these pensioners who don’t have a bank account (bankless) are wasting £500-£550 a year. As energy bills - probably on the standard tariff, cheap insurance companies don’t want to know about those cant pay by DD and some companies charge a fee for not paying by DD..
Auburngal My mam was thought she was very 'on the ball' with financial stuff, and so she was, with certain things.
But she once asked me if she should get broadband, having seen a BT advert on tv, and said it 'seemed like a good deal'.
She only had a landline. No computer, and not a clue how to use one.
She was staunchly 'BT' for the telephone, 'British Gas' for gas, you get the idea.
She had no comprehension about changing supplier or remortgaging to get a better deal. I stopped telling her about stuff like that eventually, it was like trying to explain quantum physics.

So does holding a phone

do only tourists make calls and send texts?

Personally I don’t look at my phone when I use google maps if I’m somewhere where I’m worried about phone swiping like London. I set it up before I set off and it gives me directions in my headphones.

Allfur · 17/03/2024 10:36

Having your phone out does not make you look like a tourist, given all.the uses a phone has

Allfur · 17/03/2024 10:37

Mrsdanvers - the beauty of a phone map is you can enlarge the map size so you can see tiny detail more easily
