People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Having your phone out does not make you look like a tourist, given all.the uses a phone has

Phone thieves don’t care if you are a tourist or not

They don't actually all do it now.

Usually there's a minimum spend.

So does holding a phone

Really? Everywhere I go people are stood looking at phones all the time. It doesn’t make them stand out as a tourist at all.

yes you can download tickets from the apps and use them offline or have a "wallet on your phone to keep them In and you can get your tickets offline.

I've not seen anybody been turned away from events because they can't get into their phones.

I have, on several occasions.

that's really on them to work out their ticket apps you don't need the Internet to access tickets. if you sort it before you go.

Yes, but people won't take responsibility, and then they take it out aggressively on service workers, like me.

Can you make payments over the £100 contactless limit from phone?

Apple Pay has no limit, so far as I'm aware.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/03/2024 11:37

A preference is fine but it sounds like you’re claiming technology doesn’t work when you don’t actually know how to use it

Can't be arsed is a better description. Check the A-Z, find the page, sort out where I am in relation. Done. So glad I'm allowed that preference, thanks so much.

Incidentally re the vulnerable bit - I've never had my A-Z swiped by some scumbag on a scooter. They tend to go for phones.

Indeed it doesn't, but to do that the payment system has to go online and get approval every time, which is why it sometimes falls over and doesn't work, when chip and PIN still does.

Are you sure? I've had payments go through when my bank's systems were down. It just took payment when they were up and running again.

It certainly does for £100+ payments, that's how it gets around the contactless limit. My point still stands that there are times when contactless payments of any kind will not work, when chip and pin will, so not having a bank card on you will cause problems.

So?

If they’re that kind of person they’ll take anything out on you.

That isn’t relevant at all.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/03/2024 12:32

I'm not sure why I look stupid if the technology goes down and I can't pay for stuff using technology?

I look stupid screaming at a member of staff but then most people aren't abusive idiots.
Surely the issue is abuse is staff but bank cards?

Yep. I have spent £2000 using my watch.

Well, given that I'm on the receiving end of abuse over this quite regularly because people basically leave the house unprepared for events which are pretty likely to occur, then yes, it's highly relevant.

Once again, no it isn’t.

Those sorts of people would throw abuse over anything.

There are two situations here. People who leave the house without their bank cards - like a lot of people on this thread including me.
People who are twats and act like complete dicks to shop staff.

Despite what you seem to believe they are not all the same people, unless you believe that every single person on this thread who has said that they don’t tend to use cards is also a twat. I’m not saying that some people who don’t use cards aren’t twats, but then they exist in every group of people.

What about the people who get shitty with staff when they don’t take cash?

SerendipityJane · 17/03/2024 15:29

Imagine being told you could only use cash, and having the rather smug expression on your face captured on an ATM CCTV as it told you it was out of cash, or the network was down ?

Well I can. I suspect not many here could.
