Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

I can't help but wonder if this is part of the reason women are kept down by men. We sit around calculating our worth based on our waist size.

Jesus wept.

Yes. Not massive but almost certainly overweight, at least on anyone who isn't very tall. (I'm 5'9'' and I would be overweight at a size 14.) It wasn't twenty years ago. I have a size 14 silk dress from Warehouse bought in about 1995 that is smaller than most modern size 10s.

I have several clothing items from Oasis and Wallis from early 90s that were size 10 then (I'm 5'9") and I definitely could not fit into now while a size 10, 10 years later. I've given them to my early twenties daughter, as they are apparently all the rage now and fit her size 8 (now) figure

I don't think you'll ever see a post where men are worrying about their waist size.

There probably is some validity to keeping women's time, mental bandwidth, and resources tied up with trivial things.

Mellowyellow12 · 16/03/2024 02:49

I am a size 10/12 and 5’6 and a half. People describe me as slim but my BMI is 26.5 so technically I am overweight.

IloveAslan · 16/03/2024 03:28

Dacadactyl · 15/03/2024 12:07

I'm 5'7" and if I was a 14 I'd be overweight.

I'm 5'7" and if I was a 14 I would look great (I've been there). Currently a 16 and according to BMI I am slightly overweight.

There really is no way to judge by size alone. There are frequently posters on MN who are shorter than me, weigh more, and yet are wearing a smaller size.

WavingCatsandDogs · 16/03/2024 05:25

I'm 5'3" and size 14

I feel and look overweight.

But I look at most people around me and I'm slim. 🤷‍♂️ in comparison.

Then I see a vintage size 14 in a charity shop. I can't get into it.

I am fat.

I assume some people here are like me. Don’t give their shape and size a second thought irl. But I am bored and this is a thread I clicked and commented on. I am in my fifties, my weight is the least interesting thing about me and my friends! And should be for most people really.

TruthRevolution · 16/03/2024 07:42

I am 5ft 8 and a size 12-14. Mostly 14 just now. I definitely feel fat. I need to lose some weight.

IanCurtisdancing · 16/03/2024 08:10

how fucking dull.

Swiftmob · 16/03/2024 08:12

I agree it’s not interesting, but health wise it’s pretty clear that you’ll be better off as you age if you follow nhs guidelines on weight and waist size

lairyfights9 · 16/03/2024 08:17

I'm currently a 14-16 and I've lost 4 stone in the past 3 years. I'm still definitely overweight (only another stone to lose to be within healthy bmi range), which to me is 'fat', but not AS fat as I was. I was obese (based on bmi) when I was a size 18. It obviously depends on height as well though. I'm 5'6

Oh my God, what a load of reductive, facile cobblers. You can easily be a size 12 or 14 and not curvy, lots of women aren't curvy and if you aren't curvy at a small size, you're less likely to be curvy as you get bigger because of the orders of magnitude required to form a curve between points A and B get so much larger (you'd need a bigger difference between waist and hip measurements to form a curve if you're larger). "Fat" at the comparatively lower sizes is dependent on so much more than just the dress size and is subjective to an extent anyway.

She obviously means curvy in the sense of having a bit of extra flesh rather than the traditional meaning of curvaceous.

Men worry about their height and other sizes and about hair loss. Probably also muscles and other looks-based issues.

Because it’s just so honestly sad. 21 pages of women talking about how fat they are.

That's not what curvy means, though. And if you're going to substitute dress sizes with reductive adjectives, you'd better use the right ones.

And since you can't substitute dress sizes with adjectives, since everyone carries sizes differently, best not to do it at all!

Not really, most women are able to discuss weight, theirs or as on this thread more theoretically alongside multiple other issues.

And whilst the more worthy can pretend this is a trivial issue routed in patriarchy and vanity the truth is being overweight is damaging, debilitating and ultimately can be a death sentence. It affects not only the individual but society as a whole and instead of cheering on “body positivity” we should be looking at fat as a political issue.

I don't use curvy in that way, but I acknowledge that some people do and if people do then the meaning of words can also change.

TruthRevolution · 16/03/2024 09:23

I don't think it's sad. I have eyes and a mirror, I can see that I need to lose a bit of weight.
People in the UK are getting fatter and fatter, setting up a life time of health issues. That's sad.
Why are so many people deluding themselves, what's wrong with recognising you're a bit fat and doing something about it.

Noicant · 16/03/2024 09:23

I think a size 14 is 31 inch waist and under 31.5 inches is considered low risk for health so no I don’t think it’s fat.

Words mean things. They are exclusive or they are meaningless. A dog is not a teapot and a size 14 isn't universally a subjective description. Some women aren't even "slightly fleshy" or whatever that poster was pretending "curvy" means at a size 14. That's why it's reductive cobblers to try to replace all dress sizes everywhere with words that are either subjective judgements or don't even mean what you want them to mean.

Edited

The poster was giving her opinion so obviously it's subjective.
