Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

In general:
Size 4 and 6 = Skinny or Very petite
Size 8 = Slim
Size 10 = Slim/Medium build
Size 12 = Curvy but still slim
Size 14 = Curvy but chubby
Size 16 & above = Fat

True, but if you are one of the rare people who are so muscular they throw off BMI, then you'll know it. It's a fairly good tool for the mere mortals.

Very true 😆.

@NonPlayerCharacter not sure how you think I'm saying anything different from what you are saying? There is nothing controversial about BMI, it's a good measure of healthy weight for the bast majority of the population? What was I saying that didn't correspond to this? Dress sizes are a poor approximation, but the weight distribution in clothes sizes still follows a pattern. Even though it's shifted to the right over the years.

I was explaining earlier about why size inflation is not about vanity, any more than chairs and doorways also getting larger to accommodate people getting bigger overall.

Nobody wants to hear it. People are determined to believe that it's a mass conspiracy to lie to fat women that they're thin. It's not. People got bigger, the industry adapted. Sizing definitely went loco but vanity had nothing to do with it.

It's size inflation. It's not vanity sizing. Fat women know they're fat.

You call a 10 medium, but a 12 slim. 12 is bigger than 10. I'd say a 10 is slim to medium and a 12 is medium to chubby. A 14 was chubby when I was young, but is likely to be fat today (depending of course on height, actual measurements etc.).

Oh my God, what a load of reductive, facile cobblers. You can easily be a size 12 or 14 and not curvy, lots of women aren't curvy and if you aren't curvy at a small size, you're less likely to be curvy as you get bigger because of the orders of magnitude required to form a curve between points A and B get so much larger (you'd need a bigger difference between waist and hip measurements to form a curve if you're larger). "Fat" at the comparatively lower sizes is dependent on so much more than just the dress size and is subjective to an extent anyway.

Is a size 14 fat?
RosesAndHellebores · 15/03/2024 21:00

At 11 stone, at my height, I not classed as overweight and am an M&S size 14. I'm perfectly happy with that at 63.

My younger self was utterly appalled that 11 stone, for my height, was classed as within normal range. I considered 10 stone shocking; 9.5 stone porky and aimed for 8.7lb to 8.12lb. At that weight in the 80s I was an M&S 10.

Our perception of normal changes as our lives change and we grow with experience.

I am larger at the middle nowadays but at 11 stone my legs are fabulous. If only I could have my 20s waist with my 60s legs :). Perhaps I should book a tummy tuck. My waist is now 33". 40 years ago it was 23"!!

Sorry I wasn’t clear, I meant that 10 would be if you were slim but medium build, as in tall with wide shoulders and 12 would be curvier but not necessarily fat . Basing this off people I have known with large chests but smaller waists. At 14 you’d be curvy but carrying fat where you don’t want it as well. Guess it’s also dependent on where you buy clothes, I shop mostly at H&M and they haven’t given way to vanity sizing as much as other stores have.

No?!?!

PickledMumion · 15/03/2024 21:06

I'm 5'7",10 stone, size 14. Essentially slim build, but with several rolls of fat round my belly. I'm unhealthily fat at this weight, but I know lots of people who are probably a similar size in terms of measurements, but an entirely different shape, and who are perfectly fit and healthy.

Marilyn Monroe and many of the sexiest stars of the 50s and 60s were size 14.

Size 14 in their era was a lot smaller than today's size 14.

I just don’t buy Marilyn Monroe was a size 14, even a bit more of a generous one decades ago. Fair enough if a 14 then was more like an 8 today but surely not?

MM looked tiny. Also, Kim Kardashian - also tiny, despite her big arse - couldn’t get into her dress for the Met Gala and had to wear a fur stole as it wasn’t done up I believe.

Blibbleflibble · 15/03/2024 21:10

I'm 5'5" and a BMI of 25 and a size 14 top. I think I look a bit fat but its because all my excess weight is on my tummy and face and I have a short neck. My same height SIL weighs more than me and is a size 14 bottom but she has a slim waist and face and looks a healthy weight. I think it depends how you carry your weight, if you're an hour glass or pear shaped size 14 looks fine, my apple shape makes me look a bit podgy. I definitely need to have a BMI of 23 or under to look a healthy weight (and have a healthy waist line based on my British Heart Foundation waist tape measure) and 22 and under to be considered slim.

Long story short is size 14 considered fat? No. But some people carry weight better than others.

Comefromaway · 15/03/2024 21:18

There is ann Italian Pucci blouse marked 14 but it’s a lot smaller than todays 14.

at her biggest she had a 28.5 inch waist but she was bigger on top than her waist.

her clothes fit on size 6-8 clothes models of today.

Yes I would have guessed she was an 8 in hips and bust with a size 6 waist. Crazy how different the sizes are… When people say “Marilyn M was a size 14 and look at her” they really need to know how different the sizes are and it’s not like they’ve only changed by one size.

Dibbydoos · 15/03/2024 21:51

Size 14 if your 5'1" or less isn't obese but it's over weight. I'm 5'7" and 14 is a good size on me but I'm an athletic build, if I was pear shaped it might look overweight.

At the mo if I could get to a size 14 I'd be delighted... 3 stone of covid weight is hard to shift...

seven201 · 15/03/2024 21:55

I'm a 14 and have a fat tummy and face. I think my bmi is probably around 25.5 at the mo. A tall size 14 woman could well not be fat though.

I'm 5'8" and have a fair amount of muscle and size 14 is definitely overweight on me (fat in places it shouldn't be). I'd need to be size 12 or below to be normal weight, 10 to be slim.

MummyJ36 · 15/03/2024 22:23

LOL at all the supermodels replying to this thread.

It’s is totally subjective, both to the person themselves and the person who is judging them. It is impossible to say if a size 14 across the board is “fat”.

Aria999 · 15/03/2024 22:24

I wear size 14 m&s knickers and I have a size 10 m&s pair of trousers from years ago that also fits 🤷‍♀️

5 foot 4, bmi between 22 and 23

Songbird54321 · 15/03/2024 22:31

I'm 5'8 and a size 12 and according to my bmi am slightly overweight so I would say for most, size 14 isn't 'optimal weight'. That being said, no-one has ever described me as fat apart from me (I used to be size 8-10), usually get told I have a lovely figure, likely because my waist is relatively small still.

I'm 5'2 and size 6-8 so yes a size 14 at my height would be fat. 26" waist.
I'm 59...but personally think age is irrelevant.

seasaltwater · 15/03/2024 20:49

FFS this is all literally ridiculous. body shape and weight, and what it 'looks' like is quite largely dependent on someone's height and how weight is distributed.

You cannot universally say size 14 is fat. You cannot universally say that size 12 is 'average' or 'medium'.

Someone who is very short might look pretty overweight at a size 12. Look at female athletes who play football and rugby - some of them will be size 14 or even SHOCK HORROR a size 16. They will be infinitely fit and healthy and not 'fat' nor do they look it.

I weigh 68kg. This is slap bang in the middle of 'healthy weight range' BMI for my height and age. I wear size 14 trousers. Someone who is shorter than me, would look much larger than me at that weight. Someone who is taller would look slimmer. it's not rocket science. Whether I objectively look fat I dk. I know that I have also felt that I have looked fat from a very young age, largely because of people making comments like OMG size 12/14/16 so fat!

So, those who are, stop shaming people because of a clothes size. it's utterly ridiculous and purile.

YES.

I can’t believe the garbage I’ve read on this thread. “8-10: medium/normal; 16 obese” 🙄😮‍💨

hopsalong · 16/03/2024 00:34

Yes. Not massive but almost certainly overweight, at least on anyone who isn't very tall. (I'm 5'9'' and I would be overweight at a size 14.) It wasn't twenty years ago. I have a size 14 silk dress from Warehouse bought in about 1995 that is smaller than most modern size 10s.
