Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

I’m 12-14 and often buying 14 but am not overweight. I’m 5’8” though. I’d look more at height:waist ratio for an idea of health.

This..I'm 5'8'' and 9.5 stones and need size 14 tops sometimes.
BMI index matters more than clothing size which is often ''vanity sizing''.

Normal" BMI range is 18.5 to 25.0. Over 25 is overweight, over 30 is class 1 obese, over 35 is class 2, over 40 is class 3 which used to be called "morbidly" obese. There are exceptions (most professional rugby players would count as obese, and very tall people are disadvantaged a bit by BMI in that they tend to be called overweight with a lower fat percentage than shorter people), but it's a useful rule of thumb.

Really, the main exception are POC. If you are Asian, a BMI of over 23 is overweight. I have been moaning about this lately! I think it's the same for black people.

It isn't the same for black people. If anything, black people can probably be healthier at heavier weights. I am mixed race (black and white) and was told this by a doctor, although I have never even been close to overweight by BMI.

The few clothes I still have from early 1980s belie that. I was a 14 then and am now a 12. The 14 still fits so only one size difference. And sizes in those days varied depending on where you shopped.

I think the 80's may have brought baggy styles and fashions...I wore some baggy shit, shoulder pads were in fashion. things were not structured and fitted. Actual measurements do not lie.
MM was tiny 22-24 inch waist....35 bust.....

Thats a current day river island teenager! Hands up who has a 24 inch waist???

I'm horribly skinny (been quite ill) My current day 8 is hanging off me. My waist is still is bigger than 24". I'm 5.6 and less than 8 stone.

Sweetheart7 · 15/03/2024 16:54

How tall if you are 5ft 8 and a size 14 no. 5ft 3 and a 14 yes likely!

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 15/03/2024 16:55

foxandbee · 15/03/2024 16:03

It so much depends on your height and build. I am 5'3" and 10 stone, so mildly overweight. I am size 12 (or 10 in some shops, depending on the cut).

At size 14 I would look fat. But that might not be true of someone else my height and weight, that is why the BMI ranges are so wide.

Edited

I'm the same size and weight as you more or less, but obviously very different body shape as I am 12-14 - never ever a 10.
I never really thought of myself as "fat" but based on this thread, it's what I now imagine most people are thinking when they see me.

Sweetheart7 · 15/03/2024 16:56

@oakleaffy I'm quite a bit heavier than you around 11 stone. Size 10 in tops size 12/14 in jeans. 5ft 3. I carry it well.

fleurneige · 15/03/2024 16:48

She was not skinny- that is for sure, She has a small waist, but a 'soft' belly and rounded thighs. No she was NOT fat. What we have lost in society, as said above, is perspective and the middle road.

Who will contradict me that being stick thin is NOT healthy, for most women. And that the expectation to be, is causing mental health issues which are really unhealthy.

And osteoporosis and brittle bone disease in later years.

I do not understand either extremes.

I don't think stick thin or even the expectation to be is the main health problem right now in the UK.

No, that would be the 90s when much of this shit started. I don't think it's a coincidence that obesity has risen steadily since then.

What I said- extremes. From the sublime to the bleeding ridiculous. 14 is neither.

fleurneige · 15/03/2024 17:00

And MM's weight fluctuated very much.

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 15/03/2024 17:02

I think 'size 14' is a load of shite. I wear size 10 jeans, and a size 10 T-shirt unless it's Fred Perry in which case it has to be a 12 to account for my massive norks. However, we're going on holiday in 2 weeks and I was sorting out my dresses! One of them is an 18! I've never seen a size 18 but that's the size of my dress!

So, do I consider a size 14 'fat'?! No I don't but if I was a size 14 i wouldn't look right, I'd feel crap, couldn't wear the clothes I wanted to and would do something to shift it. But I wouldn't look at someone at a size 14 and think 'you're fat'. That'd be a size 20/22 that I might think that.

Going to disagree with you there as well. I very much doubt the expectation to be thin- I assume thats what you mean by this shit-has resulted in 60% of the population being overweight or obese. More complex reasons for that.

I bet you look wonderful x

Thank you 😊😊😊

Suffolker · 15/03/2024 17:05

Most of my adult life I’ve been a 14. I’m tall (5ft 10) and an athletic build (massive shoulders). I always considered myself to be a few pounds overweight rather than ‘fat’. With extra height you still look in proportion I think. At one point in my late 20s I dropped to a 12 and felt good about myself. Now I’m in my 50s and creeping towards a 16 (thanks menopause) and I definitely look fat!

ShiftySquirrel · 15/03/2024 17:05

I'm average height and a 14, and yes I am overweight bordering the obese category of BMI.
Not nice, but true.

Diamondcurtains · 15/03/2024 17:05

I’m a size 14. I know I’m overweight and look awful. Recent health check put me at obese and I also have high cholesterol. Working really hard to lose weight with diet and exercise but since the menopause it comes off a lot slower.

Aria999 · 15/03/2024 17:06

I don't think you can tell from a clothes size, it's going to depend on your body shape.

ViciousCurrentBun · 15/03/2024 17:06

A far better indicator would be height and then vital statistics. I’m close to 5ft 5 and am a size 10 to 12 and weigh about 9st 8lb. No idea what my vital statistics are these days.

Back in the 1980’s by the standards of the day you would most definitely have been fat these days looking round you then no you wouldn’t be. I have a size 10 fake fur mini skirt from my raving days in 1990/1991 it is bloody tiny and a size 10 apparently, it’s probably a modern day size 6.

@umberelladay I had a 24 inch waist when young, I haven’t measured it for years the last time I did it was 28 inches when I was having a Maid of Honour dress altered on me, about 10 years ago. I keep a pair of skinny jeans that I rarely wear these days but keep just to see how my waist is getting on. I bought them 15 years ago. That’s the best thing to do. I just try them on a couple of times a year. It’s very important to stay a healthy weight for me as type 2 diabetes is prevalent in my family.

141mum · 15/03/2024 17:06

So agree, I used to be a size 26 now I’m a size 14 supermodel 😂
joke about supermodel

JamSandle · 15/03/2024 17:07

Yes, it would be overweight.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2024 17:09

Yes, unless you're very tall or 'big boned' and by big boned I mean maybe the broad shoulders and hips require a size 14. I don't mean fat people who call themselves big boned. I suppose you could also be a weightlifter or something.

K0OLA1D · 15/03/2024 17:09

PegasusReturns · 15/03/2024 16:33

You also said you have no idea what your waist size was and that you are a size 12-14 and wear a size 14 for comfort, all of which points away from the fact you actually have a 31” waist 🤷‍♀️

31.2 happy?

CaterhamReconstituted · 15/03/2024 17:09

Size 14 is not necessarily fat.

WorthyKoala · 15/03/2024 17:09

I'm 5'9" and yes i'm fat at a size 14, it's almost worst if you are tall and fat, more conspicuous and everyone expects you to be like a model because youre tall.

LightDrizzle · 15/03/2024 17:11

Overweight.
I would be obese but only because I’m so short.
