How many hours a week is your heating on?

ChoccieEgg49 · 14/03/2024 18:27

We are averaging 23-33 hours per week going by my app from Nov-Mar, which equates to approx 4 hours a day give or take.

Is this average? Excessive? I've no idea. Our bills are still ridiculous though. I try to use the log burner as often as possible.

Obviously everyone's situation/home size/insulation levels are different, I understand that, but it just got me wondering.

how many hours a week is your heating on for?

Ours is available 24/7 but thermostat is only set between 13-14 - well insulated house. We tend to use the sitting room gas fire for around 10 hours per day though.

I know using the gas fire is expensive but I feel cold not having a flame to look at.

4 bedroomed detached house - gas bill average this winter has been roughly £150 per month.

Tryingtogetonwithit · 14/03/2024 23:31

10-14 hrs a week, we are north end of UK in an eternally damp spot but we all run hot blooded thankfully because I wouldn't be able to have it on 24/7

OnlyTheBravest · 15/03/2024 00:48

The heating is set for 6 hours a day , 42 hours a week(1 hour in the morning and 5 in the evening) but it costs virtually the same to leave it on for one continuous period (10 hours) instead of twice a day. Therefore on colder days it is on for 10 hours but there is no difference in cost. Due to hybrid working there is usually at least one person working from home, so I like to keep the air warm as it is hard to work with cold hands.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/03/2024 01:30

Depends on whether it’s -40 outside or not.

Tanaria · 15/03/2024 04:54

My bills seem really low compared to what some people on here pay, even though my heating is usually set to click on as soon as the temperature in the house drops below 18C.

My combined gas/ electricity bill is around £3 on good days right now and £5.50 on colder days. Less than £150 per month. Large 3 bed house.

RecycleMePlease · 15/03/2024 05:37

If it's below 10 degrees, then it's on 10 hours a day (3 in the morning - I start work early) then 7 in the afternoon/evening - not that it's necessarily actually running all that time.

Now that it's generally over 10 degrees outside, I still have it timed to be on for that length, but it's firing up a lot less, and I don't expect to have to buy oil again until September (after filling up generally in about November and February)

I don't have decent control over my heating though, and it's a house with some big open spaces (I'll be sorting thermostatic valves and better controls this year)

Beezknees · 15/03/2024 06:20

Mine is set to 16 most of the time, then to 20 for 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 15/03/2024 06:49

My timer is set for 7 hours a day so 49 hours a week but my thermostat is set to 17 so it may not actually be on for all of those hours. I’ll also pop it on if I’m chilly during the day when off work and may even occasionally crank it up to 18.

At the moment, about half an hour to 45 mins a day. so 4-5 hours a week.

ChoccieEgg49 · 15/03/2024 10:35

I've got mine set 6am-9pm on 17, but often crank it up to 19 in an eve as its a bit chilly when sitting watching TV.

Gosh, that sounds like a lot. For us, it's more in the winter obviously. But at most, might be 2 hours or so in the late afternoon/early evening. Sometimes a similar 1-2 hours in the morning. But that's in the depth of winter.

Currently, I don't think we've had it on since maybe over the weekend for a few hours. We have two wood burners and we use those in the late afternoon/evening to warm the downstairs. Upstairs it's just warm pj's and duvets. So at the moment, maybe 10 hours a week, if that? But we live in a big old farmhouse and I think are used to feast or famine when it comes to heating.

We also don't have a thermostat. Either heating is on or it's off and we have to do it manually. It's not timed or set to a certain temp. We just turn on if it feels too chilly. Mostly, this is to keep the damn dog warm, as the rest of us can wear a jumper.

Misthios · 15/03/2024 10:49

Makes me laugh the people who “don’t have the heating on” then go on to mention their wood burners.

Zanatdy · 15/03/2024 10:51

15hr absolute max. Now it’s 1-2hrs a week. A flat in the South East

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/03/2024 10:54

Set to come on at 21 twice a day i.e. 6 am - 7.30 am, then again 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm, if it drops below 18 at any point it will come back on.

No hearing or wood burners here and I'm in Scotland. Just a big dog and heated throw to keep warm. Well insulated home though

24 is so hot to keep a house at though! I'd be roasting in there.

It's not too bad, I like to keep the house well ventilated so the temperature drops anyway.

MumChp · 15/03/2024 14:03

From 2 pm til 6 pm during the week and 8 am to 6 pm at weekends.
It's 5-7 C in the day outdoor and -1-3 C at night.

GinandGingerBeer · 15/03/2024 15:26

Just looked at my app and it's variable between an hour and a max of 3.5 hrs a day depending on outside temp. So it averages at about 2hrs 15 mi. Thermostat is set to 18° ish with a few tweaks here and there then 14° over night (never gets that cold)
Hoping we are over the coldest months now.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 15/03/2024 15:31

About three hours a day at 18 degrees. We pay just over £60 a month for gas.

YorkBound · 15/03/2024 17:13

Ours is set to keep the place at 17.5 during the day and 9 at night. It comes on if it needs to.

Concestor · 15/03/2024 17:16

112 I think. We both work from home, heating is on 7am-11pm every day. Costs an average of £250 a month, but I just cannot bear being cold.
Obviously it's on Thermostat so might not be on constantly during those times,It depends on the temperature outside.

MineAgain · 15/03/2024 17:20

We work from home so the heating is on a lot. We set it to 21/22 degrees and it clicks on off throughout the day. We turn it down to 18 overnight.

It depends on whether you live in the Baltic north 🥶 or the balmy south 🌞
