How many hours a week is your heating on?

ChoccieEgg49 · 14/03/2024 18:27

We are averaging 23-33 hours per week going by my app from Nov-Mar, which equates to approx 4 hours a day give or take.

Is this average? Excessive? I've no idea. Our bills are still ridiculous though. I try to use the log burner as often as possible.

Obviously everyone's situation/home size/insulation levels are different, I understand that, but it just got me wondering.

how many hours a week is your heating on for?

It depends massively on your type of heating. Air source heating is designed to be on for long periods at a low temperature. Gas central heating is very different. Storage heaters heat overnight on the cheaper electricity. It's not really comparable. As well as all the other factors like insulation, whether you have south facing windows, where you live etc. You'll probably get a more representative idea by asking friends, family or colleagues in similar circumstances.

Here we go with the competitive underheating. 4 hours a day, not since January... have we had "we're ROASTING and it's 12c in the house, any more and i'm melting"?

In Glasgow it was 5c today. That is cold. The heating is on.

It's not competitive to me, I just can't afford it
Already in debt to my energy company which I'll clear over summer when I'm using less

It's been about 12c here today so not too bad and it's a fairly well insulated apartment. 2hrs a day plus usual household energy stuff is costing me between £3.70 and £5 a day

BMW6 · 14/03/2024 19:52

At least 100 hours pw. On every day 8am to 11pm roughly.

Set at 19°. The most expensive month it cost £130.

Shoutinglagerlagerlager · 14/03/2024 19:57

84hrs per week. I’m now wondering if that’s excessive, having seen the other responses.

justthecat · 14/03/2024 20:00

Not at alll, rely on the wood burner when really cold and heated blankets

bobby81 · 14/03/2024 20:04

I'm really shocked at some of these responses!
Ours is on for an hour in the morning & an hour in the early evening. So 14 hours a week. We do have a log burner which gets lit on cold days.

Itsthemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 14/03/2024 20:08

Probably 1-2 hours a day max and most days not at all

cardibach · 14/03/2024 20:11

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 14/03/2024 18:32

Hasn't been on since January. It just hasn't been nearly cold enough.

Bollocks hasn’t it.
Mine is set for 18 for a few hours morning and evening. Most mornings this year it’s not even got up to 18 before going off and it’s come on for at least some of every evening. Below 18 is potentially hazardous to health, never mind comfort. And also to the fabric of the house.

space99 · 14/03/2024 20:12

Mine has been on between 1 hour and 5 hours a day over the last few weeks depending on the temperature. Today is the first day, it’s not come on at all. Thermostat set at 15.5

cardibach · 14/03/2024 20:14

WingsofRain · 14/03/2024 19:37

None, our house is unheated. If we need extra warmth we use a heated throw.

You are going to have really expensive problems with the fabric of your house if you keep this up. That’s leaving aside the health of your family.

Where do you live? If you're in the UK don't you have major issues with damp or mould?

PansyOatZebra · 14/03/2024 20:22

Maybe 10 hours??? Possibly less.

MuddlingThroughLife · 14/03/2024 20:22

About 10 hours a day so 70 hours per week 😮

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 14/03/2024 20:24

😂 some of these replies, typical MN!

Back in the real world... we have gas central heating and ours has been on around 4 hours a day (more at weekends). I have a plug in oil radiator in my office and that clicks on/off pretty much all day.

Kelly51 · 14/03/2024 20:26

@Misthios
It is a competition on here for sure.
The not been on for 6mths carry on, it's 6 it's not cold.
Wherever in UK you live we have had some very cold days, I'm in Scotland and have it 3/4 hrs per day.
I'm more aghast at the 50hrs pw & 7am-10pm ones.

SheepAndSword · 14/03/2024 20:31

The central heating isn't on but I have a plug in heater in the living room so I put that on when it's nippy

2 hours in the morning, 4 in the afternoon/early evening.

Then 10 hours each day at the weekend.

I don't think that's madness tbh. It's been really cold I've thought. Me and the kids can't stand the cold. DH would be out in all weathers in a t-shirt so we do have debates about the heating, but I always win!

Mum2jenny · 14/03/2024 20:33

Currently the boiler is available 24/7 but we do have thermostats in all areas, so do not know how long the heating is actually on for. Not a lot at the moment though as it’s quite warm here.

Spudlover · 14/03/2024 20:36

Mine is on for about 3 hours a day. It’s set for 19 during the day and 20.5 after 7pm. I actually thought it would be higher because I don’t skimp on heating.

I also have a fan heater in my office.

storagefilter · 14/03/2024 20:36

I’d say 4-5 hours a day. May be slightly longer at the weekend. Rural Scotland.

Createausername1970 · 14/03/2024 20:38

It's "on" all the time, but set to 18 degrees during the day and 7 degrees at night, so it only clicks in if it's colder than this. I don't really know when it's actually on. The radiators are generally not hot to the touch. We have good insulation.

Bobskeleton · 14/03/2024 20:38

3-4 hours a day. But getting milder now so should chip away at it.

It's not so much for warmth but for getting the bloody washing dry 🙄

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/03/2024 20:43

About an hour a day, if it's really cold maybe a bit longer.

We live in a really well insulated new build though.

Today I've not needed it on at all.

Redglitter · 14/03/2024 20:45

None

Growlybear83 · 14/03/2024 20:48

Our heating is timed to be on for 12.5 hours a day, so 87.5 hours a week but I often have it on for an extra three hours after lunch. If it's really cold ( which it hasnt really been for most of this winter) we leave it on 24 hours.
