How many hours a week is your heating on?

ChoccieEgg49 · 14/03/2024 18:27

We are averaging 23-33 hours per week going by my app from Nov-Mar, which equates to approx 4 hours a day give or take.

Is this average? Excessive? I've no idea. Our bills are still ridiculous though. I try to use the log burner as often as possible.

Obviously everyone's situation/home size/insulation levels are different, I understand that, but it just got me wondering.

I put it on in the evening 1-2 times a week if I feel we need a bit of a treat. The rest of the time we are in Oodies/heated throws. We are in the SW so it's been pretty mild. I can reassure posters on this thread that our health is fine and the house is not about to collapse in a puff of black mould.

twointhemorning · 14/03/2024 20:50

Ours is programmed to come on daily at 6am and off at 10pm (16 hours a day) and the thermostat is set to 21 degrees. Obviously the heating turns and and off according to temperature in the room.

InTheRainOnATrain · 14/03/2024 20:52

14 hours per week. It never goes off but the thermostat is set to 20 during the day and 16 at night so it clicks on/off as needed. Mid terrace in London though so it doesn’t take much to keep it toasty!

Here we go with the competitive underheating. 4 hours a day, not since January... have we had "we're ROASTING and it's 12c in the house, any more and i'm melting"?

In Glasgow it was 5c today. That is cold. The heating is on.

People live in different kinds of properties.

I'm Edinburgh, haven't had the heating on since January because at no point has the indoor temperature dropped below 16 degrees. Outdoor temperature is irrelevant. I don't live outdoors.

RidingMyBike · 14/03/2024 20:54

Depends on the type of heating, surely?

We've got a heat pump and they're intended to run low and slow - so you run them continuously rather than having peaks and troughs but the house is well insulated so it only kicks in if lower temperatures outside make the house lose more heat.

We keep the house at between 18 and 21 degrees all the time and it never drops below that. It is zoned into 13 areas so only areas that lose heat get heated. On really cold days that means the pump runs 24/7, but on other winter days it gets up to temperature in about two hours then stays there until the next night.

FlutteryButterfly · 14/03/2024 20:55

Active 11 hours a week. The thermostat is set at 19 and has only kicked in for 11 hours this week. Average around 15 in winter.

ChoccieEgg49 · 14/03/2024 20:56

I must be nesh. No way I would have had my heating off all over winter! It's been a fairly mild one, but still.

The people who say "not been on at all" do make me laugh. Its not a competition 😂😂

It's like how long is a piece of string... There is no set amount of hours for us, and I find it bizarre that anyone knows how many hours they have their heating on in any given week or month. I have literally never taken note!

We put our gas central heating on literally when it's cold! It was warm for much of February, but quite cold so far in March, so we have had it on more in the first half of March than in the whole of February.

I know some people who have the thermostat at 23-25 degrees C. That's insane. Ours is never higher than 17-18 degrees C. If it gets a bit chilly, we wrap up/put a fleece and some socks on... (Most of the time it's on 14-15 C, unless the temperature drops below 3-4C.)

We don't just crank up the thermostat when it's a 'bit cold!' We also have loft insulation and cavity wall insulation which also helps. Oh and our heating system - radiators and boiler - is just 7 years old, and our windows and doors are only 9 years old, which also helps!

Our electric costs about £60 a month. Apart from our cooker and and heating, everything is electric.

(We live in a 2 bedroom detached bungalow.)

Bollocks hasn’t it.
Mine is set for 18 for a few hours morning and evening. Most mornings this year it’s not even got up to 18 before going off and it’s come on for at least some of every evening. Below 18 is potentially hazardous to health, never mind comfort. And also to the fabric of the house.

You carry on putting your heating on when you find it cold enough, and I'll continue to do the same then. Different people are perfectly comfortable at different temperatures. What a revelation.

Laurama91 · 14/03/2024 20:57

No idea. Its on when it needs to be. I vowed never to be cold in my own home since freezing in parents

sciencemama · 14/03/2024 20:57

Round about 8 hours on sat and sun, weekdays maybe 2 or 3 hours after 6pm

ShinyBandana · 14/03/2024 21:00

6am until 10.30pm every day. But just hallway, kitchen and living room. All other rooms turned off.

Its not bizarre that people know how many hours their heating is on for because the heating app tells you. Mine tells me how many hours it's been on each day/wk/month. It's pretty standard for a lot of people these days, all being linked to apps!

BettyOBarley · 14/03/2024 21:06

Just looked at the hive app and we've averaged about 2 hours over the last few weeks.

I WFH but I don't have the heating on during the day.

I don't think it's been on much at all this week as it's been a little warmer. The thermostat is set at 18 and it's been slightly above that most of the week (although I don't always trust that the house is as warm as it says it is!)

mondaytosunday · 14/03/2024 21:08

Mine is on all the time, in that if the temperature dips below what I've set it it fires up. How many times it's actually on is hard to say as it fires up when you run a shower etc. I'd say 4-8 hours depending.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 14/03/2024 21:10

ohtowinthelottery · 14/03/2024 19:35

2hrs every morning and 6hrs every evening - so 56hrs in total per week.

I'm the same, plus longer at weekends. But if there was only me, and not dd, I'd have it on a lot less.

Lorrainedrops · 14/03/2024 21:11

I rarely have mine on as it's just too expensive. I use hot water bottles and blankets. When I do have it on I only put it on +1 mode so it just comes on for an hour, to take the chill off. Last year I had my heating on 5 times an hour each time my quarterly bill combined with electric was £323!

mrsbyers · 14/03/2024 21:12

Ours is set to maintain 19 degrees now so always on but not always active

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2024 21:15

I don’t have an app either @SabreIsMyFave - I was surprised by how many people knew so accurately how many hours they’d had their heating on for but obviously they all have a heating app! Makes sense now 😂

Hopper123 · 14/03/2024 21:17

Ours is on most of the day at the moment but we live in the North East which is cold and I'm at home all day with a little one who won't keep socks or jumpers on his body and my own menopause symptoms are the complete reverse of hot flashes instead I'm freezing most of the time! We have it set at about 18 so if its below that it clicks on on its own once its that temp it clicks off we always have our hot water on as well which i tuink is advised with combi boilers although I may be wrong on that. I refuse to have a smart meter as i know too many people who have become obsessed amd anxious about watching it tick over. our bills are actually not too bad but we are with octopus and have found their tariffs very reasonable. we also are fortunate enough to have built up a lot of credit so thankfully we don't have to worry about having it on. I know thats not the same for everyone, if that wasn't the case we might be a bit more concerned about having it on as much.

HungryBeagle · 14/03/2024 21:17

I don’t have an app either, I didn’t know they were so common!

laclochette · 14/03/2024 21:18

About 60 hours a week I reckon but only at 18.5 degrees. The dial on the boiler itself is only set to 3/5 and all the rads are at 3/5.

Growlybear83 · 14/03/2024 21:18

I don't have an app - my heating is programmed to come on three times during the day for a total of 12.5 hours. The thermostat is set for 22 degrees and it's always on within the hours it's programmed for. We generally turn it off for the summer around May and then it goes on again at some point in September

Kalevala · 14/03/2024 21:19

ChoccieEgg49 · 14/03/2024 21:03

Those who need to keep heating costs down are also less likely to have an app. Our heating is basic, one temperature, can't set day and night temperatures or room temperatures, just timer and thermostat and no app. I don't actually know anyone with an app irl. So if you are looking at those with an app, the hours are likely to be skewed.

SittingOnTheChair · 14/03/2024 21:21

Now it's 0.
In Jan it was 4 days at 2 hours per day.
