To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

Germane, big word for you but also not applied properly.

Misandry - not relevant!

What do you mean 'big word for me?' If anything, you show a rather poor command of language; you seem unable to use punctuation properly which means your posts are rather hard to read. What do you think that the word 'germane' means?

Dh and I watched it last night. I’m still actually not sure what I think about it. As a parent of a child with a learning disability I found some of it uncomfortable - yes, she doesn’t have a learning disability but she has the body of a woman and a mismatched brain and that’s how a lot of people with special needs present. To see her over sexualised and taken advantage of in that way was really uncomfortable to watch and not something I’ve seen other people pick up on in that sense.

I actually nearly turned it off after about 40 mins as it felt very misogynistic but decided to persevere and I’m sort of glad I did. It got better as it went on and the tables turned by the end.

But I really didn’t like all the sex scenes. I’m not a prude but if someone wants to watch porn - which some of the scenes were, totally over the top and gratuitous, then do that. Don’t make a film, dress it up as arty and then shove a load of sex scenes in it. Unnecessary and cheapens it.

Just overall extremely weird.

Many people have noted and commented on the mental disability aspect and it’s extremely problematic.

If you consider how the film would present minus the “Go girl!l denouement - it would just be sheer misogyny; and I don’t think the fantasy ending neutralises that, or erase the director’s own misogyny.

I said in my first post that this film will not age well.

You’re aren’t killing people in movies about war. In the majority of movies, and this one included IMO, the actresses are being objectified and the canon is contributing to the overarching issue.

You're right, they don't kill people in movies about war. They act it out. And they act out the sex and the undesirable behaviours in this film

VampireWeekday · 16/03/2024 17:33

If it's any consolation, @Goldenbear, my husband agrees with you too - he doesn't have a fancy arty job though so maybe his opinion doesn't matter as much.

This is kind of off topic, but have any of you seen Call Me By Your Name? I watched half of it last night and honestly felt very weird about a film that seems to romanticise a grown man hitting on a 17 year old kid. Reserving judgement until I've seen the end of it though, in case that's the point. Chalamet is amazing in it, a completely believable Italian teenage boy of the 80s, and I think that hyper realism contributes to what makes it feel so wrong.

I adore CMBYN. It is one of the few films I will watch again and again. I think that possibly the element of creepiness comes from the fact that Chalamet looks the age he is supposed to be in the book (he was actually in his early twenties when it was filmed, but he doesn't look a day over sixteen) whereas Armie Hammer looks his actual age. I don't really care, though. It is such a beautiful film.

JuniperKeats · 16/03/2024 18:08

Yes, such a wide use of vocab, especially impressive is the 120th time you have referred to 'misandry' and no it's not relevant to discussions on the film.

Maybe ask yourself why you are taking someone's dislike of the film so personally.

Yeah, Chalamet really does look like a teenager in it. I think it's the way he acts though, every little movement and facial expression, and how he talks in all three languages, perfectly capture what teenagers are like. He responds to situations perfectly for that age - aware that this take is about 5 years out of date now, but he's bound to be one of the big actors of his generation.

Anyway, I found it an interesting contrast to the age gap criticisms of Poor Things (although again, to emphasise, I'll reserve full judgment until I've seen it) because Emma Stone at that point plays Bella sort of... other rather than explicitly child or teenager. She is almost like someone trying to puppet her body at that point, and it emphasises where she is on her journey of self and world discovery. But watching Chalamet play a perfectly convincingly real teenager - not even a particularly mature one, just a teenager - really felt uncomfortable. It's a clever way of telling that story because when the trope gets done with teenage girls getting into age inappropriate relationships they are made to look and act older so the wrongness of it fades from view, but it really slaps you in the face in CMBYN. It was funny because I actually had no idea what it was about other than the setting, I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it though (if slightly apprehensive I just admit!) . It's beautifully shot and acted.

Explain. However you acted pretty weird earlier.

Also the fact that the only sex scenes you can watch are like in The Piano says a lot.

Finding this discussion really interesting! I probably wouldn't have watched this if I hadn't loved The Lobster, but gave it a go and it's really lingered in my mind since. I was discussing with a colleague who enjoyed it, and we both agreed we came away with quite a 'warm' feeling - it felt like a weirdly heartwarming film and I liked the ending.

I'm not a fan at all of sex in movies, for various personal reasons, but felt Bella's matter-of-fact approach to it - she'd found something that made her feel good and just wanted to do it as much as possible - wasn't 'sexy' or exploitative, it felt like she as a character was challenging the very concept of her pleasure being for anyone other than herself. The way Ruffalo's character unravelled from being this cocky lothario used to dominating women and basking in the glory of being the greatest lay or whatever, to realising he meant nothing to her and that she couldn't be dominated/controlled.

One thing I don't understand from some comments here - it's been mentioned that the way she's treated by men is 'problematic' but isn't that the whole point? She literally calls her 'father' God, and he says the only reason he hasn't fucked her is because he's a eunuch! I wouldn't say it's a feminist film necessarily but it definitely felt like men were the butt of the joke throughout - in Ruffalo's case, in a very obvious way.

It's interesting to see the majority agreeing this is a fucked up film, I've seen much more disturbing films than this so didn't find it overly shocking, but I guess it's had a much wider, more mainstream release than other more 'art house' fair so will inevitably attract a wider range of opinions, and it's so interesting to see these discussions and see everyone's points of view. I'm not overly 'educated' in these areas so am enjoying considering all the viewpoints - even those saying they'll never watch it are still entering into a discussion, which is pretty powerful when you think about it.

Love it or hate it, one thing I thought when I first saw the trailer was that it was refreshing to see something original and bonkers being released amidst what feels like endless sequels / Marvel films etc (nothing against any of those at all, but it sometimes feels we don't see a huge amount of originality any more).

Great to see a pp mention The Devils. Would love to see some opinions of that film on here 😬

Fantastic synopsis.

I know many on this thread saw it in the cinema but I wonder if it has been particularly jarring for some who saw it on Disney+… I know there’s a lot of decent content there but it mightn’t be what people expect to stumble across. Really looking forward to All of us strangers coming on to it during the week 😊
