To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

Hated 50 shades though, not that I saw it through to the end. I am not sure about the actress in Back to Black, I could tell she wasn't from North London in the trailer, I am not sure if she is a convincing Amy Winehouse but I'm still going to see it.

I think I'd have an issue if we keep seeing Amy naked. Amy's bush. Amy's breasts.

You could have poor thing without so much focus on Emma stones naked body. Sex included.

A woman who directed fifty shades of grey 😂

And who groomed her husband. Mumsnet think that abuse and grooming only goes one way, though, so that wouldn't matter according to the misandrists.

Speaking of which, May December is a good film.

Frances0911 · 16/03/2024 15:15

Thank you for saving me the misfortune of ever watching it, sounds twisted and vile.

I thought we were discussing a film bit the misandrists on Mumsnet. Are you suggesting everyone that disagrees with you about a film's credentials is a misandrist,a but of a stretch. My DH hated the film and I quote "creepy AF" he didn't hang around to watch it. Then again he is a fan of football so probably doesn't understand 'Art:, oh but hang on he went to Art school and is a successful Architect. He prefers women with a brain than some coquettish, child like doll!

Not not 'but'

Can't believe how upset some posters are about this film, it's unreal.

People agreeing on the title of the OP and told they are essentially not allowed to critique the film or come to the conclusion, "the is shit!' Unless you are involved in the directing, writing or acting in the film, why do you care!

I don't GAF what your husband thinks or what his 'preferences' are.

Pigeonqueen · 16/03/2024 16:26

Dh and I watched it last night. I’m still actually not sure what I think about it. As a parent of a child with a learning disability I found some of it uncomfortable - yes, she doesn’t have a learning disability but she has the body of a woman and a mismatched brain and that’s how a lot of people with special needs present. To see her over sexualised and taken advantage of in that way was really uncomfortable to watch and not something I’ve seen other people pick up on in that sense.

I actually nearly turned it off after about 40 mins as it felt very misogynistic but decided to persevere and I’m sort of glad I did. It got better as it went on and the tables turned by the end.

But I really didn’t like all the sex scenes. I’m not a prude but if someone wants to watch porn - which some of the scenes were, totally over the top and gratuitous, then do that. Don’t make a film, dress it up as arty and then shove a load of sex scenes in it. Unnecessary and cheapens it.

Just overall extremely weird.

@LovelyTheresa

wasn’t her husband 18 when they met?

I'm not 'angry' but you keep talking utter rubbish and dragging in irrelevancies like what your husband thought about the film (ironic that you think a man's opinion carries more weight when the whole -specious-denigration of this film has been from people who complained that it was all from a male perspective) I also don't see how your husband saying he 'prefers a woman with a brain to an empty headed coquette' is in any way feminist.

Still far far too young for her, and she was also in a position of power over him as he was an actor and she was a director. If the genders had been reversed there would have been uproar.

The thread is amusing.

Especially the comment about anyone who likes it needs their hard drive checking oh and the one about everyone being bamboozled.

Nothing to see here, just the usual not very bright people who think that all men have nefarious intent, except the ones who agree with them, of course. Like @Goldenbear 's husband.

You really do come across as angry and are you including your own references to misandry on Mumsnet in your irrelevant posts. You even posted, 'i don't care what people think' what are you, 10!

I have no idea what you are talking about. My references to misandry are most certainly germane to this discussion. The fact is, you have absolutely nothing to back up your assertion that this film is regressive and misogynistic, and so have to resort to telling us that your husband said it so it must be true.

You were staying that anyone that dislikes it is a misandrist which is for the record, absolutely ridiculous and no argument at all!

But I'm sure you don't care, "I don't care, I don't care" what people think 😂

Germane, big word for you but also not applied properly.

Misandry - not relevant!
