To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

You really think there will be a huge demand for that on porn sites? So naive. I honestly think some women on Mumsnet live in another world.

I’m sorry to say that you might be the naive one here. There are plenty of sites that make use of much less salacious footage from films for punters to wank over. I would suggest you Google this but it is so vile I wouldn’t want to give them the traffic.

I agree with @LovelyTheresa 's take on this. I think it's a device to create a "state of nature" type person who has no pre-existing concepts or social expectations but is able to reason about and taken in new experiences as an adult would. The point is to get us to reflect on what social and moral norms we'd accept if we didn't already have a lifetime of being socialised into them.

Edited

But the premise assumes that we aren’t aware of this. Which is so annoying. And patronising.

It sort of is celebrating it in a way - casting a famous actress with lavish sets and costumes. Here we are showcasing exploitation.

films will always be made with famous actors. Sets and costumes will always be explored and played with. Stories can be true to life or can be artistic depictions. Art can entertain and/or hold mirrors up to problems in society (or lots of other things).

Like I said, I didn’t love the film. But I think it has gone over a lot of peoples heads.

Have you thought that it might have gone over yours? That the film makes idiots of women while making them think they are clever enough to have unlocked its hidden meanings?

It's already out there so who cares? You do realise people can wank over things that are not on porn sites?

You may not care, but if I was an actor I would care. I would care very much. And most do.

People will wank over an ebay listing of old shoes - some perv can get off on on anything, so that's not going to influence my judgement of the film (which I broadly enjoyed, particularly the acting & visuals). I found the central premise sufficiently interesting that I now want to read the book.

Most actors care or most people? Is this a straw poll? How do you know this? Imagine most actors are full aware someone might use their content to get their rocks off. Most people don’t put content out like that so that’s not an issue is it? There are always going to be some freaks out there so does that mean they should just stop making films?

Hidden meanings that have been addressed again and again by so many films- exploitation via the patriarchy, hardly original.

They should definitely stop making films like this, mainly because it is terrible!

It is deeply problematic that sexual violence towards Emma Stone is presented as an aesthetic element of the film, it reduces the moral stigma around it and in that sense is regressive for all women. Where was the condemnation, it wasn’t apparent at all.

Sorry, explain this to me again. What is the difference between renting poor things and wanking over it and watching the same clip on a porn site and wanking over it?

Also, I stick with my point, you and the pp who think the movie is porn titillation for men are the niaive ones. Yes clips may appear on porn sites but there are people who wank over the Littlewoods catalogue underwear section. If you think the average man is wanking over poor things you need you are totally out of touch.

If this is the case then I could list a million other films that have done exactly the same.

I don't think I ever said Poor Things was porn titillation for men*. That wasn't my first thought on seeing the film, but now that you mention it...

And to be clear about something you didn't understand: it is a thing that some sick individuals take clips from films and post them on porn sites. I didn't say that this had anything to do with the makers of Poor Things, just confirmed what another poster had said about it being a thing.

*I really don't like having words put into my mouth, especially when the words are so vulgar and clumsy.

Does the fact that other films have done this make it any better?

Glad this thread is still going. I've not seen it all yet. @Goldenbear could go on a one woman crusade to get the film banned.

Who are you talking to?

Also, what has anybody said in response to you that has been vulgar? Why are you just throwing out comments like that with no justification?

Do you understand what a film discussion entails? I don’t like the film so I’m not going to sing its praises. I don’t like the cinematography or the costume design either; If you haven’t seen the film, why do you keep contributing to this thread, maybe go and watch it so that you can make a contribution that isn’t just belittling strangers on the internet for the sake of it. You focused on another poster who has subsequently left and now it seems you have turned your attention to me.

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 21/03/2024 23:34

I've seen some of it. I wasn't the only one focusing on your friend. I also researched the meaning of the film. So I will come back when I've watched it.

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 21/03/2024 23:40

I don't mind sex in films and I don't get uptight if it's not filmed like The Piano.
