To ask how much you spend on your hair a year

I mean hair cuts, colour, styling and special products. Over and above normal shampoo.
Just read on a thread where prices were mentioned casually and I am amazed at the costs.
I get my hair cut maybe three times a year. Spend less than £150 in total. My hair could look significantly better if I spent more I'm sure, and if you can afford it then no reason not to spend more.
Just wondering what is normal.

Nothing.

I cut it myself since it’s curly so get away with uneven.

I don’t dye it.

Just normal over the counter shampoo, conditioner does the trick.

Rainynight09 · 13/03/2024 09:05

Around 150 a year

Bubblepoppers · 13/03/2024 09:05

Cut and partial highlights every 3 months £170 each time

ThomasineMay · 13/03/2024 09:05

I've been cutting my own hair since I was about 16 years old, so £0!

RampantIvy · 13/03/2024 09:06

About £600. I have short, wavy hair, that needs a professional to cut it. I also have it coloured every 5 weeks.

I don't have the sort of hair I can do myself, as was so perfectly demonstrated during lockdown.

MrWilyFoxIsBack · 13/03/2024 09:06

One dye box £10 (I only bother once a year)
Maybe a professional cut so say £40 but usually I get my friend to keep it trimmed for me

Sleepygrumpyanddopey · 13/03/2024 09:06

As little as possible. I enjoy getting it cut and I like how it looks when it's done but I can't afford to get it cut regularly anymore. My preference is to have short hair but as there isn't a hairdresser locally who charges less than £60 for a basic cut and finish I have had to grow my hair long, and I hate it.

Hoolahoophop · 13/03/2024 09:07

£220 maybe. 2x per year curly cut at £80 + about £60 on a ton of curl friendly gel and conditioner to keep in under control.

Thinking about a color now though so could go up to £500

WaltzingWaters · 13/03/2024 09:07

My hair cut costs £15. Get maybe 3 times a year. So £45 roughly. Just for a trim from a hairdresser that comes to the house.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 13/03/2024 09:08

More than most, not as much as some.

Imfreetofeelgood · 13/03/2024 09:12

About £250 max. £27 cut and £3 tip, approx 6 weekly, styling product, and I use a hot air styling brush, that needs replacing yearly (occasionally more often, it doesn't matter how much I spend on one, they just don't last, so I buy £30 one).

IncompleteSenten · 13/03/2024 09:13

If wigs count I spent about 300 about 6 months ago.
I bought some gel for a fiver when my hair started to grow back and I spent about 40ish on fibres and powder that disguise the scalp. That's it. I don't dye it or go to hairdressers or anything.
I use my sons clippers to keep it at about a 2.

Billoddiesbeard · 13/03/2024 09:16

About €750 - cut and foils every 8 weeks and 2 keratin blow drys per year. (Definitely cheaper where I live now I could probably double that price if I was still in the UK)

PurpleBugz · 13/03/2024 09:17

£50 a year maybe tops. Get it cut twice as super cuts

takealettermsjones · 13/03/2024 09:18

About £175, that includes haircuts and products.

Sometimes I get a blow dry so some years maybe add on £30.

rookiemere · 13/03/2024 09:18

I get highlights about 3 x per year at around £100 per visit including cut and blow dry, then maybe another 5/6 visits for cut and blow dry around £50 so about £600 per year. Crikey that's a lot !

Offcom · 13/03/2024 09:21

I'm the only person I know who cuts their own hair in real life, so I'm happy to see a thread full of women who do the same.

No criticism, because salons are expensive to run, but it's quite awkward for me and the hairdresser when wash and cut my fine, straight hair in 20 minutes or less and then have to charge £70.

I started just by trimming my fringe but ended up looking up on YouTube how to do the back, and now I do it all the time.

As the cutting is free, for a few years I felt it justified the cost of shampoo and conditioner from Function of Beauty – even when the price rose by over 40% in 2023. But last month they emailed to say my subscription was renewing soon and would cost £104.07. So no more Function of Beauty for me!

Had my hair scissors for ages but think they were under £20 from Amazon.

Nap1983 · 13/03/2024 09:21

hairdresser every 3 weeks for roots, highlights every second time. I pay £65 every time as its a friends salon. I also buy shampoo and conditioner from salon as keeps hair in better condition £25 every 6 weeks.

Ariela · 13/03/2024 09:22

Shampoo - we have softened water so probably 1-2 bottles per year as only use a very small blob and can't wash more than every other day max as is flyaway very fine hair. Dye - occasionally use, perhaps once one year 2 the next.
Don't use conditioner or treatments.
Don't go to hairdresser more than once per 5-10 years (might go if eg a wedding) as cut it myself - have it just long so is easier to cut.
Can't really do it any cheaper.

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/03/2024 09:23

Nothing beyond shampoo, conditioner and argon oil which I use as a serum. DH cuts it since covid.

Daffodilsdaftie · 13/03/2024 09:23

I get a good cut every 6 months or so. £65 x 2. But now I hear that we are supposed to tip hairdressers I think I’ll stop going. How awkward! When are you supposed to tip? How much are you supposed to tip? I’m too socially awkward for that, sorry.

Mitsouko1919 · 13/03/2024 09:24

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I was concerned about that but I've been using them for almost a year now & there's no damage. I use the GHD Bodyguard spray as a protector, I don't know whether that makes enough difference. But my hair has never looked better 🙂

I used a heat protection spray too. Apparently according to my then hairdresser, my hair (being highlighted and fine) was just too weak for them. I might ask my current hairdresser what she thinks.

KimberleyClark · 13/03/2024 09:27

About £1200. Cut and colour every six weeks. And yes my hair always looks nice.

FastFood · 13/03/2024 09:30

Around £200, that includes haircuts, fringe trims, and products.
Not cheap but it's money well spent.
Last year I bought a silk bonnet for the night and it's the best £50 I spent. Good care makes a huge difference.
