People not showing pride in their homes

Auburngal · 12/03/2024 11:28

Talking about those who leave the front of their homes (owned) in a state.

For example there’s a house down my parents road who has an old fridge freezer on their driveway for 5 years! Don’t understand why people spend several hundred quid on white goods don’t buy them from a retailer who takes the old one for free or for £10. I paid the retailer £10 to take my old washer away and to recycle it accordingly.

Then there’s a house opposite me who had their bathroom replaced and left the old loo and other bits outside the home for several months. A decent bathroom fitter would take the old stuff away as part of the package.

Then another family down my parents road have old children’s toys in their garden- play house, sand pit etc. The kids are too old for these toys now.

Then are properties with hedges on the road and used as a ‘bin’. Unless the owners have mobility issues - then there’s no excuse to remove the rubbish from the hedge.

People spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on their homes but I hate it when they show no care.

People need to show pride.

I am a member of a community litter picking group.

I’ve still got the for sale sign from this house in my front garden.

My handyman took it down while he was dealing with the umpteenth emergency I’d had to call him for, but he didn’t take it away and as a single parent with a bonkers job and a falling down house it’s never been top of the list to schlep it to the tip.

My front stoop could also do with a sweep but frankly I’m waiting for better weather to make it worthwhile (and paint my front door).

I’m currently spending my one child free evening in a fortnight covered in paint as I try to make the inside of the house less gross.

Do what most people do - rent a van/hire a man with a van/ask a friend with a van. Put something out on FB; you'd be amazed how many people will help you move your crap for $25

Lucky you having that money spare. I don't know anyone with a van. I can't afford to hire one. And everyday when i asked my landlord he PROMISED his "mate' was coming tomorrow.

Anyway. The cooker was laid down behind the wall. Unless you were peering over my wall you probably wouldn't see it. And if you're peering over my wall then kindly fuck off and get a life. Other than that my garden is always tidy. I plant flowers, keep the weeds at bay, pick up rubbish thats blown in.

Toptops · 13/03/2024 20:36

I feel your pain. We don't want to live in a shitty road but increasingly do. There is rubbish left in people's front gardens and on the street outside . It's not about whether they rent or own, surely it's about self respect, thoughtfulness and wanting to live in a pleasant place.
Our neighbours, who are very nice btw, have over the last couple of years left leaking paint pots which have run down the street and no doubt tracked into other people's homes and now, oil cans, ditto. But plenty of others in our road have the same attitude.
I don't know why this is even a point of discussion, it's so obvious to me anyway

I'm in Toronto Canada and we have laws about leaving crap all over your front lawn.

It attracts rodents and theft and lowers housing prices.

Do people not worry if they can't afford to move stuff, they can't afford to deal with rats?

My old neighbour had raccoons and rats living at her place. She worked was able bodied.

I'm a single mom and really didn't enjoy dealing with the issues that other people's properties cause.

Especially with hoarding which is a massive fire hazard.

I've since sold and thankfully she actually dealt with her lawn for her once a year clean up prior to me listing.

I've been raised in poverty in Canada and my home was tidy because we couldn't afford much.

And being house proud is something I saw a lot of when I lived in Africa.

Amazing how people with so little were tidy and so hospitable and welcoming.

I often wonder if so many of the issues in the developing world are because we have so much.

ZingyShaker · 13/03/2024 21:02

If I was in rural Africa, my front garden wouldn't be messy coz I'd be dead so I suppose that would be a bonus for some here.

Jesus christ seems like somebody round here ought to start a business sewing scarlet letters. Would make a packet.

Mind. Your. Own. Business. Nobody in the whole wild world is completely beyond reproach for everything.

The litter needs to be sorted. Some scruffy people throwing shit out of car windows & people not giving a shit what they chuck out on their front garden. Most of us are decent but there are some scruffs out there.

Except there are people living in rural Africa!

Most with tidy homes himes too as junk encourages snakes, rats and whatever else.

Lifeomars · 13/03/2024 21:21

A lot of the litter round my way is also the product of there being 3 fast food outlets close by, a Dunkin Donuts, a Kentucky and a Subway. People buy the food, eat it on the hoof and chuck the rubbish on the pavements despite there being bins around and about. Another thing that really gets me is when the warm weather arrives and the ice cream vans do the rounds, the lolly wrappers get chucked on the ground.

Is your front causing issues for your neighbours? Where does it stop?

I understand people have their own struggles but what if your struggles start affecting my struggles?

I have a ds with complex sn's. I have my own mental health struggles.

I don't have extra money to pay for rodent removal. Or to lose money on my house sale.

This! This is my most unpopular opinion but I cannot bloody stand when people don't upkeep their homes. It looks disgusting and a lot of upkeep isn't new triple glazed windows it's stuff like simply not having an arm chair in your front driveway for extended periods of time or mowing your lawn. A lot of it is laziness.

I leave our lawn as long as possible in spring, so the dandelions and clover are there as food for the bees and butterflies.

That sounds quite pleasant though and I'm sure it looks lovely. There are just so many scruffy, tacky and dirty houses that people could but don't think they need to upkeep and its frustrating. Nothing better than a whole road that takes pride in how they look.

muchado · 13/03/2024 23:09

Excuse me? You are arrogant and incredibly rude. Your denigration of people who live in social housing is just pure twaddle.

I have transformed my social housing property from the damp, mouldy and semi- derelict wreck with a rubbish heap for a garden that it was when I moved in. The garden in particular has been a labour of love. It now has apple, olive and apricot trees, a wildlife pond with water lilies and solar powered fountains, garden herbs, lavender, native trees and shrubs, raspberry bushes and even a little summer house- so with all due respect you can stick your stereotyping attitudes.

People like you annoy me so much.

threatmatrix · 13/03/2024 23:20

DrJoanAllenby · 12/03/2024 11:30

Have you knocked and offered to help pay for them to take the fridge freezer away?

The council charge and so do waste removal so perhaps their finances are better spent elsewhere?

Or it may be a burglar deterrent so that if people think the house is a dump then it may not be worth robbing!

Or perhaps it's none of your business?

Or maybe when you keep your house nice then these people are dragging the road down. No pride or respect. Makes area look run down.

TedMullins · 12/03/2024 11:57

I thought this would be about bleaching your skirting boards or something and was ready to say YABU but I somewhat agree with you. I grew up poor and we might not have had a decorated house but it was always clean and my mum drummed into me that being clean and tidy costs nothing (not that it had much effect as I’m quite a slob, but even I’d draw the line at an old bog in my yard). That said, removal of white goods does cost money so there probably is a genuine case of not being able to afford having them taken away. The rubbish in the hedge yes, money (or lack of it) is not a barrier to going out and picking it up but poverty and mental health issues can go hand in hand and when you’re depressed you don’t care. I can see both sides.

I bet they’ve all got mobile phones though.

I bet they’ve all got mobile phones though.

Mobile phones, unless you demand the latest and best, are usually cheaper nowadays than continuous payment for help with maintenance and upkeep of one's home and garden. And not everyone can do all these things themselves.

I am not talking about myself; I am lucky to be able to afford the help that I need; and my home and surroundings are clean and reasonably presentable. And I certainly judge litterbugs and fly-tippers; but all this talk about 'taking pride' in one's home, and implied judgement of people who are struggling, rubs me up the wrong way.

Having a neighbour that leaves mattresses in his front garden empty bottles and an old hat rubs me up the wrong way.

My DH does all the home improvements so we can’t just get the plumber to take it away. We can’t afford trades for all jobs, only the few things we can’t do ourselves. Our old front door is currently out the front as our van is at the mechanics so we have no way to get it to the tip. I hope our neighbours appreciate we are doing our best to make our house nice and will stop cluttering up the front of our house as soon as we can.

  • *Good answer, same here, and also sometimes life gets in the way and you’re just too busy to get it done .
Meadowfinch · 14/03/2024 02:58

@threatmatrix I've had a mobile phone for 20 years. I've never bought one though. People give old phones away.

Sounds like a council estate, what is the income demographic. Sad to say that low income and low education equates to grotty areas

My street on council estate was spot on clean. It's not always about money or education.

Augustus40 · 14/03/2024 04:48

Where I live you can pay the local authority c £25 to collect old items on a set date. You put them out on the front pavement the night before ready. Saves going to the tip. I have done this many times.

Guavafish1 · 14/03/2024 04:53

My area is like that... I agree it affects living standards and quality of life.

To compound this, the council are terrible at tackling fly tipping and rubbish collection and maintaince or dealing with weeds.

The whole Borough looks shabby and its sad when you drive between Boroughs you can see the change clearly.

It's has an negative effect on residences.

silentpool · 14/03/2024 05:05

You do realise that £25 is the difference between heating or not to some people?

It's difficult to believe people really don't know this, perhaps some should spend less time polishing and more time learning about the state of the country.

Except if people can’t do things because of disability like @ZingyShaker and I, then we can’t do them.

Do you think that we choose to be disabled? Would be happy to have rats?
Don’t care about our environment and the effects of our disability on those around us?

I can tell you that the absolute WORST thing about my being disabled is that constant grinding guilt about the burden it places on those around me.

But none of that means we can suddenly walk/bend/lift/balance etc to be able to do these jobs.

This is yet another example where the able bodied community would actually be helping themselves as well as us if you joined in and campaigned for better service provision so that disabled people would be able to keep on top of this stuff, yet very very few do. Most just moan and complain as if we are being disabled just to annoy them.
