People not showing pride in their homes

Talking about those who leave the front of their homes (owned) in a state.

For example there’s a house down my parents road who has an old fridge freezer on their driveway for 5 years! Don’t understand why people spend several hundred quid on white goods don’t buy them from a retailer who takes the old one for free or for £10. I paid the retailer £10 to take my old washer away and to recycle it accordingly.

Then there’s a house opposite me who had their bathroom replaced and left the old loo and other bits outside the home for several months. A decent bathroom fitter would take the old stuff away as part of the package.

Then another family down my parents road have old children’s toys in their garden- play house, sand pit etc. The kids are too old for these toys now.

Then are properties with hedges on the road and used as a ‘bin’. Unless the owners have mobility issues - then there’s no excuse to remove the rubbish from the hedge.

People spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on their homes but I hate it when they show no care.

People need to show pride.

I am a member of a community litter picking group.

I'd like to have a nice garden but I became disabled following an accident and can't really manage the upkeep of it. I've tried getting a gardener but no one ever comes back to me.
It's ok at the moment as I managed to get a friend to help recently but I can't expect that all the time.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 12/03/2024 19:32

There are a multitude of reasons why someone may not prioritise keeping up with the Jones's. Poor physical or mental health, poverty, experience of trauma, bereavement, domestic abuse, overcrowding. Obviously not giving a shit is one of the possibilities but it's very narrow minded to think that's all its down to.

Surroundedbyfools · 12/03/2024 19:33

For gods sake get a life. What’s it to you what other ppl choose to have their homes like !

TomeTome · 12/03/2024 11:30

Maybe they have better things to do?

Absolutely this. Or they either don’t care, or their busy body neighbour has mentioned that they should tidy up the front of their house…….

Ninahaen · 12/03/2024 19:45

Ooh. The judgey pants are out in force today.

my garden is a mess. Too busy with work, parenting, commuting, cooking, managing migraines and trying to have a wee bit of a social life and self care to do anything about it.

mind you.. a fridge there for 5 years is pushing it

Personally I couldn't live with shit everywhere and I keep my home tidy inside and out. It seems to be rare though - neighbours either side of me have weeds growing all over their drives and half finished building works. Nothing to do with mental health or lack of money just laziness. But they clearly don't mind so there is nothing I can do about it. It isn't bad enough to devalue our house thankfully - that would make me very angry if I was trying to sell and I would absolutely say something.

@Titsywoo

that would make me very angry if I was trying to sell and I would absolutely say something

and so you should!

Something like 'Do you mind if I weed your driveway to give my house more curb appeal'

Paul2023 · 12/03/2024 12:50

No excuse for leaving old white goods outside a house , the same with old sofas and furniture. A few days or weeks maybe but years ? Just pay the council to dispose of them ! Probably £30 for the council to collect.
That would annoy me.

@Paul2023

£70 by my council & as I said in a previous post I was unable to meet their requirements.

(I am fortunate in that I could afford to
oay privately, but it was expensive & not everyone can afford it)

Spectre8 · 12/03/2024 19:55

I live on a road with a recycling place you can walk to. My neighbours just dump their stuff for other people to take or then go sump toys by the litter bin ...too fucking lazy to walk 3 mins down the road to recycle stuff.

ZingyShaker · 12/03/2024 20:19

I paid £40,000 for my house, it wasn't hundreds of thousands.

I've since become disabled. I can't manage the garden, I do have a gardener but he hasn't started yet this year because it is too wet.

When I had white goods to get rid of, I got a neighbour to put them outside, at the front for the council to collect. I paid £15 per item (there were two) for the council to lift them but it took them 3 weeks.

It's upsetting to think how much I'm being judged.

Bishbosch · 12/03/2024 20:19

Some of them will be lazy, others won't have the time, money or physical health. I had an immaculate home until I had children, but with two disabled children sometimes there are weeds outside. Or the back garden may be messy with toys. Nothing horrendous, but not what I'd like either.

There will likely be times in your life where your own home isn't what you'd like and people will judge you.

I think the concept of being proud of your home is old fashioned.

OK, good for you. I think you're wrong though.

CreateAUsername2024 · 12/03/2024 20:21

I can't believe people on this thread are trying trying suggest all dirty scruffy buggers who can't be bothered to look after their driveway with no regard to the eyesore it puts on their neighbourhood are all going through trauma or poverty etc. The fact is some are just gross and lazy, if it hits a nerve take a couple of days out of your weekend and sort your house out. It let's down the whole road when people just don't care. I don't agree that what people do in their homes is their business, its out of order when you're doing your best to make your home look immaculate and present the area well and your neighbours house is bringing the community down.

Auburngal · 12/03/2024 11:46

I know they aren’t rented. Plus many LLs Ts and Cs require the property to be in a reasonable state. The more mess etc, the less deposit you get back.

Well I presume when people move they would take their stuff with them if they want their deposit back, so until then why are you worried so much?

LLS are often the ones renting out their properties in a bad state and refusing to make repairs!

Renters often don't have the money to pay for someone to collect the large rubbish, as others have mentioned.

I'm neither dirty nor scruffy. Well, I might be scruffy to you, but I am not dirty.

I am disabled. I cannot take a couple of days out of my weekend to sort my house out. I pay for a cleaner because I am no longer able to clean. I pay a gardener but he hasn't started yet.

What you see as scruffy is clothes to me that I can put on and take off myself.

What a horrible thread.

We also have one neighbour who puts their bin out on a Tuesday night and it's still there 3 days later, they only bring it in when they need to put a bin bag out and realise they need to go and get it first, despite driving past it morning and night.

Come down my way, the bins sit out for years on end, very narrow pavement and when two people pass on the street one of them has to walk in the road as there is no space.

I have neighbours like this! Also my next door neighbour (the woman) never puts out the bin or brings it in. Only her husband does that. So common🙄 man's job that is.

I do both, as does DH, my eldest even does a turn as well.

scrivette · 12/03/2024 20:26

Some people have better things to do - I agree with this.

My front garden is a bit messy as I have three cars on the drive and the weeds grow through the pebbles we have down. The house needs painting but it's not on my list of priorities right now. I also hope it deters burglars!

I don't have any rubbish/sofas etc on it.

My back garden in the summer is fantastic though, you just wouldn't believe it from the front.

takemeawayagain · 12/03/2024 20:27

I've got one neighbour who has fires on his front lawn to burn all his rubbish and another who broke their window with a ball and boarded it up. Estate agent told me it's going to make my house harder to sell as it all looks such a mess. It really fucks me off.

I depend on my neighbour to bring my bin in. It sometimes takes him a day or two

Ifeellikeateenageragain · 12/03/2024 20:29

OP, I think you cannot see that there are different people with different circumstances. Some people may not "see" the rubbish you see, some may want to remove the rubbish but don't have the spare money, time and/or the physical capacity to move it. Unless you've knocked on the door and offered to help them, go away with your judgement. And before I'm labelled as "one of those" I raked through and hand cleaned 3 square metres of decorative shale put the front at the weekend at the front cos I didn't like the little bits of broken off hedging lying on top of it!

Lifeomars · 12/03/2024 20:29

SitSea · 12/03/2024 16:36

I find it so depressing on my road. We have so much litter and fly tipping. People just don’t care at all ☹️

It's the same where I live, didn't use to be like that, flytipping is endless, council cleans it up and then there is more there a few days later. Makes me quite depressed and I feel embarrassed about where I live.

Notchangingnameagain · 12/03/2024 20:32

Perhaps, they purchased the replacement white goods second hand or got them from a free site?

Some people don’t care. Some people don’t have time. Who knows and who cares really?

Screamingabdabz · 12/03/2024 20:33

It’s very virtuous isn’t it to say ‘oh we mustn’t judge’ but actually these things reduce the quality of life for everybody. They make places look scruffy and encourages other scruffy anti-social behaviour.

I’m with you op. Leaving mouldy inappropriate crap outside your house for years is bang out of order. And I will be judgey because there is no excuse. The scruffy shits need to sort themselves out.

Lifeomars · 12/03/2024 20:34

Lampy123678 · 12/03/2024 17:33

Exactly this. So many people saying "it only costs £50" etc are completely oblivious that some people unfortunately don't have a spare £50 and when they do there are always more important things to spend it on.

Council where I live used to collect for free, then started to charge, and people said that flytipping which was already an issue would get worse. Guess what? fly tipping is now out of control and of course the council still have to come and collect and dispose of it. What really hacks me off is that the fly tips are so huge sometimes it is obvious that someone will have driven to the area to dump the stuff, so why not drive to the council tip? We get stuff flytipped outside the gates of the local school I have seen the teachers having to move fithy mattresses before they can access the carpark and start their working day
