I am quite happy to say racism is an extraordinary evil and a real blight on our society. I long for its destruction.
I am quite happy to repeat that it is racist and wrong to say because I dislike one black women I am going to hate all black women.
What makes me hesitate to condemn this man is because, amongst other things, reading the quote above and not quite knowing the significance of the 'dots', I suspect that he almost gets it. He realises that he doesn't hate all black women and I assume the 'dots' are him realising that what he is saying is wrong. That it is racist to hate all black women because one black woman annoys you.
So if this makes sense, I think he is making progress and in a curious way, given that we are flawed beings, that is to be welcomed just as racism is to be hated.
Some will say that racists must always be condemned but then others will say we are all inherently racist, and that belief is backed by impressive research which is easily found by an appropriate internet search. It was that that started me musing on our feelings.
It also started me thinking about whether there are degrees of racism. Many would say you are either racist or not. But if we are all inherently racist, can I be more racist than you?
Finally you will be relieved, I think people often decry others for being racist because that allows them to concentrate on the other person's racism rather than confronting, combating and correcting their own. Not dissimilar from deflection.
