Why oh why do people quote the first OP…

MamaGhina · 11/03/2024 20:08

…especially on pg1. We’ve all read the OP. Why do you need to quote it? Subsequent posts as the thread moves, fine. But why the whole first post?

Just opened a thread and read the OP. The very first response quotes the OP. I mean, come on! Even more annoying when it’s a long post and you have to scroll past the lot.

And breathe.

OP posts:

Only about 100, so you crack on!

And 1000 of the same 'hilarious' responses quoting the whole OP. Oh ho fucking ho I can't take the sublime wit any more.

NomDePrune · 11/03/2024 20:26

If you use the app you can filter by OP threads if you only want to read what they post - although there's often only one post these days...

mydrivingisterrible · 11/03/2024 20:27

I did it by accident myself this week. 😭 Pressed the 'quote' button without thinking followed by a couple minutes of complaining to myself that I'm the person I hate

Sugarfish · 11/03/2024 20:29

On one of the other threads about things that annoy you on mumsnet, this was mentioned a lot. Turns out a few posters thought that was the only way to add to a thread.

Another thing I wonder is why people jump on threads to say there are already loads of threads about that subject.
And why people jump on a thread to say they don't care about the subject.

You dont know how many replies a thread is going to get, if this one doesn't get many letting the OP know where to find all the previous threads asking the same question is helpful for her to refer to

You can do that on any platform I think, its not an app only feature

MamaGhina · 11/03/2024 20:34

Fair enough, the subject has been done to death.

OP posts:
DillDanding · 11/03/2024 20:36

I agree, OP. Quoting has its (limited) place. But it’s mostly annoying and pointless.

can you show a screenshot. Because for me the app won't do that. it does nearly nothing, tbh.

Brefugee · 12/03/2024 11:15

for EG in the app (Android) i can - from the I'm watching list - hide a thread. (or open it)

once in the thread i can un/watch or hide. That is it.

You have to click the funnel top right of page

Then click the OP name at top and it will filter showing only their posts.

But like I said, often they have totally disappeared and never come back to the thread.

Brefugee · 12/03/2024 14:06

No funnel. And no opportunity to add a photo so can't attach screen shot.

MagnoliaBrown · 12/03/2024 14:06

I hate it too.

There was talk about not being able to quote the OP.

Brefugee · 12/03/2024 14:06

my App doesn't have any of that. And won't allow me to add pics so - meh.

Brefugee · 12/03/2024 14:07

in fact - i work with devs so this is a particular bugbear of mine - the app is so bloody amateurish i try to only use it for mindless scrolling while waiting for a train. I hate it with the heat of a thousand suns.

Android or iPhone? mine is horrendously purple. I loathe the entirety of it's useless self 😀

Wendysfriend · 12/03/2024 14:12

Yes and when it's a long op and they reply with one word or a very short line 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 I end up clicking out

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 12/03/2024 14:19

I don’t do it but I think people used to do it so that if the OP edits the post to remove all the text and replace the whole post with “delete delete delete” they can still read what the OP was.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 12/03/2024 14:24

Even worse, I was reading a thread a couple of nights ago. The op was quoting their own post, followed by another posters reply & then their reply to each post. I just gave up.

AngeloMysterioso · 12/03/2024 14:49

Good god, the number of dickheads on this thread doing that exact thing because, what? They think they’re being so clever and witty? Slow claps for all of you.

Yup, they're the office workers who think it's hilarious to bring in penis-shaped chocolates on Valentine's Day 'for people who aren't getting any, fnar fnar', who you spend far too much time trying to get away from on a daily basis to the point of super-glueing massive headphones to your nut.

MagnoliaBrown · 12/03/2024 15:42

So what is other people have started threads about this a year ago?

Did we all have to stop talking about something, here on this talk forum, because there was a thread about it last June?
