a woman asked me to hold her dog at the checkout while she packed her shopping. Was I BU to say no?

The woman in front of me was unloading her trolley onto the conveyor belt with one hand and holding a dog under her other arm. Is it a pug, the one with the squashed up face? Anyway, it wasn't happy and was wriggling around.

She asked if I could hold the dog so she could pack her shopping properly in her bags. I said no. She said she couldn't put the dog on the ground because it didn't like the feel of the floor under its feet. I still said no. She then took absolutely ages making a point of packing her shopping with one hand. At the checkout. While holding a dog.

The checkout operator told her dogs were not allowed in Aldi and she replied "well that's why I'm carrying her". Nothing more was said.

I know mumsnet will probably be divided into those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg. I'm not one of those people.

Would you have held her dog?

This makes me so cross.

What on earth is a non service dog doing in Aldi?

Why had the customer not been challenged on bringing the dog into Aldi?

Why didn't the cashier call someone to deal with the issue at the checkout?

Well done on not agreeing. Personally, I'd be making a complaint to head office about a dog in Aldi. It's not ok and these feckless dog owners carry on getting away with it.

Makes me mad.

Trixiefirecracker · 11/03/2024 20:59

I wouldn’t have held it. Pugs are ugly little things and dogs are bloody everywhere these days. Disclaimer I have had dogs and I do like them but not in shops or restaurants.

I work in a supermarket and I have seen dogs who don't look like service dogs recently. One was sat in what looked like a small pushchair with a netting over it. Another was a small dog who was sitting in a women's large shoulder bag with its head sticking out. The problem is if you challenge they will probably say they are service dogs and we can't prove otherwise. My favourite regular customer is actually a service dog who regularly comes in with his silent owner to buy a cooked chicken. Although the owner doesn't speak he will tap the dog after being served and the dog does a little yap yap to say thank you whilst wagging its tail delighted with their purchase.

Yeah, I have a friend who puts her dogs on "service dog" leads and little 'service dog" vests. They're not service dogs, she just hasn't trained them to be able to stay at home for an hour, or perhaps even with her or her dh whildt the other one goes to the shop. They do everything as a family - kids, parents, and dogs all go round the supermarket together. No one dares question the dogs because she bought a special lead off Amazon.

PlumpHobbit · 11/03/2024 20:59

No I'm not a fan of dogs so wouldn't have held it, especially as it was wriggling and cleanliness unknown. She's brought it with her, so can deal with the consequences

I'm grimacing at the thought of a dog in a supermarket with all the food etc (think fruit and veg) uncovered. Only service dogs should be allowed in.

If it doesn't like the feel of the floor on its feet (really would it have hurt for 5 minutes while she packed the shopping) don't take it to the shop

ilovesushi · 11/03/2024 20:59

That is utterly nuts. I love dogs. Love dog friendly cafes, pubs, hotels etc. But even I draw the line at dogs in supermarkets. I feel sorry for the dog. Makes me think it has had a very limited life if it won't accept different textures under foot.

Coldupnorth7 · 11/03/2024 21:00

I have dogs. I don't take them in shops.

Someone had a dog in Costco the other day.

Clafoutie · 11/03/2024 21:00

Willmafrockfit · 11/03/2024 14:55

no, silly woman
i carried my dog into the supermarket, needs must, but would not have asked anyone else to carry her for me

You did this, even where dogs are banned, because ‘needs must’?

Gowlett · 11/03/2024 21:01

No. I don’t like dogs.

MadamVastra · 11/03/2024 21:01

I would have laughed as it's so crazy but of course said yes! I love dogs!

dawngreen · 11/03/2024 21:02

Some times dogs are happier snoozing at home. I have never carried my dogs round a supermarket.

Justsewsew · 11/03/2024 21:05

@AllEars112232 saw 2 in John Lewis Solihull today. They were here from Germany and the Netherlands for crufts.

Radiat · 11/03/2024 21:10

I love dogs, I have my own (who is far too big to be carried through the supermarket) but I wouldn’t have held someone else’s dog. There’s usually a sign on the doors saying service animals only, so I don’t know why some people think they’re too special to stick to that.

I saw someone carrying a small dog in Tesco the other day, I was surprised security didn’t stop him on the way in. It was two adults plus dog, so absolutely no need to take the dog into the shop.

babyproblems · 11/03/2024 21:16

Cashier should’ve called the manager. Dogs aren’t allowed yet this one was… I am a doggy person but not in the supermarket!!

I was 1000% expecting this thread to be about parking… at our local Aldi the parking is insane with people parking as close to the doors as possible/not in bays. So they will park on end of rows in the ‘road’ to be close to the shop. Even though there’s hundreds of empty bays further away. I can’t stand it!!! Literally stopped going there because it makes my blood boil. I finally thought someone else felt my pain 😂

TiredCatLady · 11/03/2024 21:22

Grim.

Prometheus · 11/03/2024 21:24

How on earth does she know that the dog doesn’t like the feel of the floor on its feet???!!!

AllEars112232 · 11/03/2024 14:55

What is it with people taking dogs into shops these days? Last few times if been to John Lewis they're have been did is all sizes walking around.
Those poor animals!!
Op you were not being unreasonable.

I can explain my reason why my dog is with me. She is a rescue probably a puppy farm I rescued her at 12 weeks she has terrible separation anxiety , she is well behaved, never pooed in any shops goes in lifts. I had to leave her for a doctors apts as an emergency could not get anyone to sit with her, 45 mins I was back she had worked herself up into a hyperventilating mess, this was the first time I had left her alone in nearly 3years. If we weren’t allowed to take dogs with me I wouldn’t be able to shop at all. I get 3 hours a week to go food shopping. John Lewis have a dog friendly policy as do H&M.

Bluestarling · 11/03/2024 22:32

Still don't want your dog in a food store. Sorry.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 11/03/2024 22:59

I would have held the dog but I am a HUGE dog lover. She's probably used to people fawning over cute he is (and rightly so!).

Blueskybird · 11/03/2024 23:01

I adore dogs, but she was being really cheeky. Not everyone likes dogs and as much as I do, I’d think twice about hugging a random next to my face, when you have no idea of its temperament! Why on earth did she take it out shopping another example of entitlement!!

Octopuslethargy · 11/03/2024 23:05

W0tnow · 11/03/2024 14:51

That’s nuts. Are people getting more 🦇 💩?

Edited for clarity: I’m referring to pug holding woman, not the OP.

Also, since when is a dog not ‘in’ a store if it’s being held?

Edited

In Fortnum and Masons food hall apparently. (a dog is not a dog if carried- even a Labrador)

dutysuite · 11/03/2024 23:06

I quite like pugs but I don’t like touching/ holding dogs or cats plus I get allergies so I would have said no.

BingoMarieHeeler · 11/03/2024 23:09

Ew no I would not hold some random pug. I probably wouldn’t even hold a friend’s pug tbh. I probably wouldn’t EVEN hold a friend’s cute dog.

If I ever get another dog, I’m teaching it to levitate.

RunningJo · 12/03/2024 08:16

Probably would have held the dog, but then would be rather puzzled as to why Aldi didn’t ask her to leave when they saw she’d taken a dog into the store.

I mean there are no dog rules in place for a reason, why do some people think it doesn’t apply to them. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m a dog owner and don’t understand this thing where the dog has to go everywhere now?

How do you get your food shop though?
