a woman asked me to hold her dog at the checkout while she packed her shopping. Was I BU to say no?

The woman in front of me was unloading her trolley onto the conveyor belt with one hand and holding a dog under her other arm. Is it a pug, the one with the squashed up face? Anyway, it wasn't happy and was wriggling around.

She asked if I could hold the dog so she could pack her shopping properly in her bags. I said no. She said she couldn't put the dog on the ground because it didn't like the feel of the floor under its feet. I still said no. She then took absolutely ages making a point of packing her shopping with one hand. At the checkout. While holding a dog.

The checkout operator told her dogs were not allowed in Aldi and she replied "well that's why I'm carrying her". Nothing more was said.

I know mumsnet will probably be divided into those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg. I'm not one of those people.

Would you have held her dog?

Dogs unless they are service dogs- guide, dogs for deaf, those who detect fits and dogs who are being trained to be service dogs, shouldn’t be allowed in any retail place.

We had customers with dogs coming in and we ask them to leave the dog outside.

If anyone is fearful of leaving dog outside or dog isn’t capable to be on it’s own for an hour - you should question why they have a dog.

Willmafrockfit · 12/03/2024 11:41

up until 20 years ago i would have always left my dog outside the shop.
times are different

Auburngal · 12/03/2024 11:43

I have held dogs by their lead when owners have popped into my work to buy a few things. Some dogs don’t like being tied up. A couple of times customers asked staff could someone get them a single item- milk, dog poo bags etc and give us cash for the item. Then give the item and if any change to the customer.

Please explain what situation you were in that meant you had absolutely no other choice but to take your dog into the shop.

Willmafrockfit · 12/03/2024 12:09

why @BeingATwatItsABingThing

Willmafrockfit · 12/03/2024 12:10

it doesnt affect anyone

ohdamnitjanet · 12/03/2024 12:11

No I wouldn’t, and she shouldn’t have been allowed in the store.

Bluestarling · 12/03/2024 12:40

But it kind of does affect others. It causes outrage at the entitled rule breaking. And disgust because it's not hygienic for animals to be in food stores. And I would say any animal really. Exceptions have to be made for service dogs though because that's the right thing to do..

@Willmafrockfit

it does

what about people with allergies? Or people who have phobias of dogs? or people who just don’t want dogs around them or food ?

dogs are not more important than humans

zingally · 12/03/2024 16:35

I wouldn't have minded holding the lead of a dog on the floor, but cradle some random dog in my arms? Fuck that.

DisabledDemon · 12/03/2024 18:42

She wanted you to hold the dog because it didn’t like the feel of the floor under its feet? It’s a dog, FFS - not a bunch of flowers!

Ivesaidenough · 12/03/2024 18:54

A man came into my local Tesco recently with a dog. A staff member immediately came over and said, dogs aren't allowed.
The man then said, Oh, ok, but can I just get what I came for then go?
Confused

Ilovecleaning · 12/03/2024 19:01

Stupid entitled moo

Airspice · 12/03/2024 19:02

For the love of god this dog obsession malarkey is becoming beyond ridiculous!! A dog in a food store?? WTAF!! Asking a stranger to hold it because it doesn’t like the floor’?!!!! Surely there aren’t really batshit crazy people out there that think any of that is reasonable?! Leave the f*cking dog at home!!!!!! And I like dogs.

mondaytosunday · 12/03/2024 19:34

Gosh I like dogs but she shouldn't have brought the thing and she should have been challenged as soon as she walked in. And the not liking the floor? It's a dog. I'm sure it liked the floor much better than being held by some random.

LinaLouLa · 12/03/2024 19:34

I wouldn't have held her dog. Nothing to say it isn't a biter! And she shouldn't have even had a dog in a food shop. Entitled bag!

JustMeAndTheFish · 12/03/2024 19:57

Yuk no thanks. I’m allergic to dogs so that would have been a nightmare.

Manthide · 12/03/2024 20:16

I generally like dogs, quite happy to pat and make a fuss of one but I wouldn't hold someone's dog. I'd probably hold a baby but then it might start screaming. I might have offered to help with her packing though depending on the vibes she was giving off. I've never seen a dog in a shop before but had a very unfortunate encounter with one - on a very long lead - on the underground a few months ago which ultimately meant I missed my train. I didn't realise dogs were allowed on the tube.

Never seen dogs in our Aldi at all.

Centre aisle next week 😉

Sennelier1 · 12/03/2024 20:17

I like dogs but I still think they should not be in supermarkets. You leave your dog at home if possible, with a trusted sitter if needed. Or you buy your stuff in an open-air streetmarket.

Trishthedish · 12/03/2024 20:27

Wtf is a dog doing in a supermarket? I have two dogs and I would never dream of taking them into a shop. People are crazy.

RafaFan · 12/03/2024 20:35

No way would I have held the dog - those little dogs are often stinky (the owners no longer notice) and want to lick your face. I say this as a dog owner.

An option would have been to offer to pack her shopping instead, then you could have hurled it all in, making sure bread was on the bottom, biscuits got smashed etc. just for her cheek.

Emmz1510 · 12/03/2024 20:36

I’m surprised the staff didn’t make her leave it outside. She probably would have tried to say it was her emotional support dog or something!
No chance in hell I’d have held the dog.

PeloMom · 12/03/2024 20:40

There are dog strollers . Not that the dog should be at the supermarket in the first place
