a woman asked me to hold her dog at the checkout while she packed her shopping. Was I BU to say no?

The woman in front of me was unloading her trolley onto the conveyor belt with one hand and holding a dog under her other arm. Is it a pug, the one with the squashed up face? Anyway, it wasn't happy and was wriggling around.

She asked if I could hold the dog so she could pack her shopping properly in her bags. I said no. She said she couldn't put the dog on the ground because it didn't like the feel of the floor under its feet. I still said no. She then took absolutely ages making a point of packing her shopping with one hand. At the checkout. While holding a dog.

The checkout operator told her dogs were not allowed in Aldi and she replied "well that's why I'm carrying her". Nothing more was said.

I know mumsnet will probably be divided into those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg. I'm not one of those people.

Would you have held her dog?

Go to M&S, don’t get this kind of nonsense there.

Ah yes! Rudeness is only specific to working class peasants!

LouLou198 · 11/03/2024 15:02

I've held a baby to help someone out, but I wouldn't hold a dog!
She sounds very entitled. How does carrying it mean it's not in the store?
You take a dog, you pack with one hand!!

MiddleagedBeachbum · 11/03/2024 15:06

Now that is bat shit! I love dogs, so probably my would have said yes but then put it on the ground so it learns to walk on its own two feet ffs 🙄

User884721 · 11/03/2024 15:06

I would also hold a baby. Or offer to unload your shopping while you hold your baby. I'm not totally unreasonable. But I'm not holding a dog for anyone.

I've seen guide dogs or other dogs wearing a service dog vest but I've never seen anyone just wandering around a supermarket among the food with their pet dog. But I realise I'm in a minority and dogs can go pretty much anywhere nowadays.

Wind them up and watch them go.

SmallIslander · 11/03/2024 15:09

I was bit in the face by a small dog, but I'm not that bright, so probably would have held it and enjoyed the weirdness of the situation.

Bluestarling · 11/03/2024 15:12

Utterly gross. I'd have told her the dog shouldn't have been inside the store and complained to Aldi. I'm sick of dumb people thinking it's fine to bring dogs into supermarkets

WaltzingWaters · 11/03/2024 15:13

I have a dog. But no way would I have held some batshit lady’s nervous dog in a supermarket where the dog shouldn’t be.

People are just so entitled these days.

She should have been asked to leave with the dog and leave it in the car/at home.

Mikkismum · 11/03/2024 15:25

I have a dog and generally like dogs but they have no place in food shops unless service dogs. This aside, I would happily hold another dogs lead to help out an owner but not pick up or hold an actual dog, except in some sort of emergency (which clearly this wasn't).

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 11/03/2024 15:35

She thought it was OK to carry a dog because they weren't allowed!!!? So whether something is somewhere or not is conditional on their feet touching ground? On that basis wheelchair users have never been anywhere. Or babies. I've never been to many places I thought I had been to in a car.

Watch and I'll bet the 'no dogs allowed' sign will be amended to cover all possible ways of a dog being in the store.

ohtowinthelottery · 11/03/2024 15:37

@Mikkismum It's not just food shops they shouldn't be in IMO, they shouldn't be in clothes shops either - unless it's a dog clothes shop! I was in town at the weekend and went into FatFace. There was a man in there with a great big fluffy dog. It's only a small shop, so impossible to get past the dog without going near it and impossible for the dog to avoid the clothes on the rails. Who the heck wants to buy brand new clothes ready covered in dog hair?

Icystars · 11/03/2024 15:39

I like dogs and have a dog but I would have said no to holding it. Mad lady.

IKnowYouBetterThanThat · 11/03/2024 15:39

Eww no I wouldn't!

My dd, however, would have been delighted 😅

EasternStandard · 11/03/2024 15:42

I don’t blame you

FictionalCharacter · 11/03/2024 15:44

Yanbu.
Poor dog though. “Doesn’t like the feel of the floor under its feet” indeed. Owner is ridiculous and clearly not letting the poor animal have the normal life of a normal dog. One that walks and runs about on the ground.

Basilthebad · 11/03/2024 15:44

if it were a cat yes. But not keen on dogs and a bit wary of them. I was chased by one as a child so a bit nervous.

Some dogs don't like slippery floors, to be fair!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 11/03/2024 15:45

I would have been very happy to be asked, and would be very happy holding the dog - and giving it a cuddle and a kiss

BUT dogs should not be in supermarkets etc. and it is happening more and more, often with the pretence that the dog is an assistance dog - often they are not.
I sometimes enquire which charity trained and supplied the dog, they huff and puff and don't admit it is not an assistance dog.

BIossomtoes · 11/03/2024 15:47

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2024 14:52

I don't like dogs, but would have enjoyed a cuddle with a squishy faced dog.

I’m the opposite. I’m a great dog lover but no way would I have held someone else’s dog, particularly since I wouldn’t dream of taking my little darlings into a food shop.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 11/03/2024 15:48

Baby yes, dog no, and i love dogs. The staff should have been tougher on her and they need to be on it in future making sure no dogs in the store unless service dogs.
Same with all shops bar pet shops.

LenaLamont · 11/03/2024 15:49

YANBU - no way on God’s green earth would I hold someone’s pug.

It should never have been in the ship in the first place, and I don’t blame you for a moment for not wanting the hold the dratted thing.

Verv · 11/03/2024 15:49

I'd hold a dog because I love them and wouldn't say no to one.

But, thats because I adore dogs, and not because I think that this woman wasnt being a bit nuts and entitled - because she was, and dogs arent allowed in Aldi.

Again though, not the dogs fault that the owner is a weirdo, and I do understand how some dogs get freaked out on slippery surfaces.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/03/2024 15:49

I love dogs generally but no, I wouldn’t have held this lady’s dog. Partly because I don’t like pugs and partly because she was an absolute dick to take her dog into a supermarket.

How is ‘that’s why I’m holding him’ an appropriate answer to ‘Dogs aren’t allowed in here?’. Sounds like Aldi will have to make it really clear to customers that dogs aren’t allowed and funnily enough that rule applies even if you are carrying said dog.

BarbieDangerous · 11/03/2024 15:52

Erm no. I’d hold a baby/small child but a pet? Absolutely not

Really? Is that a thing? I had no idea
