a woman asked me to hold her dog at the checkout while she packed her shopping. Was I BU to say no?

The woman in front of me was unloading her trolley onto the conveyor belt with one hand and holding a dog under her other arm. Is it a pug, the one with the squashed up face? Anyway, it wasn't happy and was wriggling around.

She asked if I could hold the dog so she could pack her shopping properly in her bags. I said no. She said she couldn't put the dog on the ground because it didn't like the feel of the floor under its feet. I still said no. She then took absolutely ages making a point of packing her shopping with one hand. At the checkout. While holding a dog.

The checkout operator told her dogs were not allowed in Aldi and she replied "well that's why I'm carrying her". Nothing more was said.

I know mumsnet will probably be divided into those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg. I'm not one of those people.

Would you have held her dog?

I see all your dogs and parrots and raise you...

A chameleon! I kid you not! In Asda in Harrogate about 15 years ago. I thought it was plastic but then it moved. Apparently he liked to go out and about on his owners shoulder in the summer...

But I now can't criticise as I use a pram to take my house rabbits to the vet as they're too rambunctious to carry in a box. Photo included.

Wow 100% of people think YANBU op!

Maybe this tide of dog centric weirdness is finally turning!

Woohoo

Tessisme · 11/03/2024 19:38

I definitely wouldn’t do it. I would have done it when I was younger because I was a bloody pushover, but not now. I hate to see animals in shops where food is sold. So who was the woman lying to? She told OP that she was carrying the dog because it wasn’t supposed to be in the shop. And she told the checkout person she was carrying it because of the floor.

They've only got quite small paws so it wouldn't be very comfortable in a metal trolley and might find their legs fall through 😯

🤣

Now I'm feeling bad I didn't hold the dog. It can't sit in a trolley in case its little paws hurt and it can't walk on smooth floors. Poor thing.

I work in a supermarket and I have seen dogs who don't look like service dogs recently. One was sat in what looked like a small pushchair with a netting over it. Another was a small dog who was sitting in a women's large shoulder bag with its head sticking out. The problem is if you challenge they will probably say they are service dogs and we can't prove otherwise. My favourite regular customer is actually a service dog who regularly comes in with his silent owner to buy a cooked chicken. Although the owner doesn't speak he will tap the dog after being served and the dog does a little yap yap to say thank you whilst wagging its tail delighted with their purchase.

crackfoxy · 11/03/2024 19:45

I'd rather have helped her pack

HanaJane · 11/03/2024 19:46

Why did she have a dog in Aldi anyway? That's crazy! I probably would've held the dog because I hate saying no to people but I really wouldn't have wanted to so well done for sticking to your guns!
I am saying this as a dog lover and owner btw!

Namechange666 · 11/03/2024 19:47

Tbh, I wouldn't have held it either. I wouldn't want dog hairs all over me.

The woman brought the dog in, she should have thought about it quite frankly.

Estellaa · 11/03/2024 19:51

those who would be delighted to hold a stranger's dog then pack up their loose fruit and veg.

What do you think happens to your fruit and veg before it's picked?

All kinds of shit touches it, which is why you wash it.

Estellaa · 11/03/2024 19:55

And I'd have held the dog. I'm a groomer so have no issue touching dogs that aren't mine as per some pp 🙄

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/03/2024 19:56

I would have changed queues and not even responded, even if I had to repack my items in my basket. I have a dog phobia and can act oddly in social situations though...

@Estellaa

so?? I still don’t want dog arse germs on my hands and stuff

citrinetrilogy · 11/03/2024 20:00

I wouldn't have held her dog, but I would probably have cracked and packed her shopping for her, just to get rid of her.

Estellaa · 11/03/2024 20:01

Well you'll probably have shit and fertiliser germs on your hands from touching loose produce 🤷‍♀️

And I never said anyone should hold the dog, so what you are replying to me like that for, I don't know.

Did you mean to reply to someone else? 🤔

Ah, I got it the wrong way round😅

MoonlightMemories · 11/03/2024 20:07

No, I definitely would not have held her dog.

I'm really not a dog person at all and would hate that my clothes would then be smelling of dog for at least the rest of the day, it's not a smelly I'm very keen on!

So rude and presumptive of her to ask you to hold it for her.

No way I’d be holding someone’s dog . Would have said no too.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 11/03/2024 20:21

She sounds like a complete entitled dickhead to be honest. I wouldn’t have held the sodding dog either , why was it even there???

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 11/03/2024 20:24

Yes I would’ve.

But it’s cheeky of her.

Katemax82 · 11/03/2024 20:37

She should have been slung out of aldi for having a dog!! A lovely lady held my baby in aldi once while I packed (she offered), but even that I wouldn't expect anyone to do.

Bazinga007 · 11/03/2024 20:42

God no, they are ugly little things and shouldn't be anywhere food.

VivienneDelacroix · 11/03/2024 20:50

Willmafrockfit · 11/03/2024 14:55

no, silly woman
i carried my dog into the supermarket, needs must, but would not have asked anyone else to carry her for me

Needs must?

It's a dog. There's no need for a dog to go into a supermarket - was it going to reach for its credit card and pay because you'd left your wallet at home? Was it pushing the trolley because you couldn't?

Tie it up outside like normal people used to. Or, here's an idea, leave it at home!

AboutYouTalk · 11/03/2024 20:52

Dogs in shops and especially supermarkets is just grim 🤢🤮 people are taking the mick.
