Blocked toilet. Who should pay?

I am going through a divorce and live in the family home at present which is currently on the market. He moved out. My toilet is blocked and we cannot use it for this reason. My stbxh won’t go halves to get the problem fixed saying it’s my fault for blocking it. Over the years it has occasionally got blocked and we have been able to unblock it. My dad has a long thing that goes far into the toilet but it can’t be unblocked and I have tried products including bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar along with other branded unblockers. Nothing except poo/wee and toilet paper had been put down it. I can’t afford to pay to get it unblocked by myself and it has been like this since November. AIBU to think my stbxh should pay half?

Whole packet of washing soda crystals down the bowl, leave for an hour or so, then full bucket of hot water (with more soda in if you have some) in quickly.

Tried all that a million times

There's no point in making suggestions. This is probably a backed up issue and needs to get a dude out to check down the man hole.

Your ex isn't going to pay, it doesn't affect him.

I unblock my own manhole. Mines in my garden though. Maybe ops is not though

Legal fees are astronomical. So far it’s cost £35 000. I don’t earn this a year but work a 60 hour week job. I haven’t eaten in 3 days as can’t afford it. I can’t afford to get the toilet unblocked. Tried everything under the sun to sort the problem. I am suicidal. I can’t survive like this

Then you have bigger problems than a blocked toilet.

Ask the ex seen as he is the bigger earner to pay for the plumber and take the cost back in the sale.

Is there more to this. Sounds like the type of thing some ex partners do to have some control of the estranged partner.

I don’t control him! He cheated! I don’t have a controlling bone in my body!

Pooing in a bag

........and then what???

Letmegonowihavehadenough · 10/03/2024 18:33

Nowfor · 10/03/2024 18:11

Actually, if he's going to get 50% of the sale proceeds he should be paying 50% of maintenance costs.

He is getting 70%.

Sorry but your issue.

He doesn't live there so totally unreasonable to expect him to pay for something you use.

I don’t have £30

You must have had possession of £30 since November. You work 60 hours a week for a start. You need to prioritise this.

It’s on the market.

Op I think @GentlemanJay meant your ex controlling you?Your situation sounds desperate.Sorry no advice biut do you have anyone you can talk to if you are feeling suicidal?

Gymmum82 · 10/03/2024 18:35

Why are you fighting him to the tune of £35,000 in legal fees when you can’t afford to eat or unblock your own toilet?

usernamealreadytaken · 10/03/2024 18:35

Letmegonowihavehadenough · 10/03/2024 18:33

He is getting 70%.

Is that because it was already his property, or he put significantly more in and it’s a short marriage/no children?

johnboyo · 10/03/2024 18:35

Drain rods and flush the outside drain with a hose. If the toilet is not unblocking, it's further up, possible even not at your house.

CatamaranViper · 10/03/2024 18:35

Absolutely do not believe you've had this problem since November and you've been coping by pooping in a bag.

I had to go to court and legal fees have been astronomical. I have not had the heating on once the entire winter as I can’t afford it. I am a size 6. I barely eat as no money.

I don’t have £30

If you don’t have £30, how will STBXH paying half help pay for a plumber?

crazycatladie · 10/03/2024 18:37

I had this and I purchased a Luigi toilet plunger from amazon, and it worked, I was sceptical when I saw it but it worked when nothing else did.

Viviennemary · 10/03/2024 18:37

No I don't think he is obliged to pay for this. If it was something like a new roof which would add value to the property then he shòuld go half.

Glittersparkle24 · 10/03/2024 18:38

MyWitHasReachedItsEnd · 10/03/2024 18:28

Put a plastic round the bottom of a mop if you have one and use it as a plunger. Do it gently to get the water moving. Many toilets are shaped that a normal shaped plunger won't work. To save I. Some mess out plastic of some description over the rim. Make a hole in the middle and put the mop through it. Can you tell I've done this before.

Next option is to open the main toilet sump outside. Ours had a lip o. It and it would build up. Again use the covers mop to give it a good jiggle if it's blocked.

It is literally a shit job. But this method should work.

Other option is drain rods. You open man hole furthest away and go in from that end.

I am the family un blocker and much as I hate it you really just have to get on with it unfortunately.

I know its literally a shit job. But im so pleased I learnt to do this it saves so much hassle.

IClaudine · 10/03/2024 18:41

What do you want from this thread OP?🤔 Even if we say your ex should pay half, that won't unblock your loo.

And as I say, you need to prioritise. Your solicitor can wait for £30, £50 or whatever.

Kinneddar · 10/03/2024 18:42

Not his problem if he doesn't live there

I had similar issues with my house. It needs plumbed in again and regularly blocks . Try one of these. Honestly best £16 I ever spent. I tried everything & had a plumber out on 3 occasions. This thing is absolutely brilliant
