To butter both slices when making a sandwich ?

DH only butters one side and says I am doing it wrong, but will accept the results of a MN vote.

YABU: You should only butter one side
YANBU: You should butter both sides

What the heck! Buttering both sides helps the filling stick and I love the taste of pure butter not margarine but proper block butter

ProbablyHungry · 09/03/2024 19:22

I’m also a one-side-butterer 😅

Thats what my mum did so I just copied her. Only when I met my husband did I find out that it’s apparently weird.

I only butter two sides if the filling will melt the butter (like sausages), otherwise only one slice gets special treatment.

I butter one slice. Why use double the quantity of butter?

Because butter is delicious

I didn't suggest butter is like heroin. How odd! I just don't see the point of using twice as much. To me the sandwich is more about the filling, not the butter.

Having twice as much isn’t going to kill you

Also butter is tasty

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 09/03/2024 19:23

Both, one is weird

Alltheyearround · 09/03/2024 19:23

My DH only does one. He is now on a training course run by me. Things are improving. He did grow up in Scotland and is known for his 'thrifty' ways.

Donthideyourlight · 09/03/2024 19:24

The butter makes sure the filling stays put when you cut it up. It isn't an additional filling. Therefore both slices is correct <bangs gavel>

OldTinHat · 09/03/2024 19:24

Both sides should be buttered! Without question!

A toasted sarnie should be buttered both sides, buttered side out so it goes golden in the machine, lots of cheese and whatever else you fancy.

A cold lunchbox sarnie should be buttered both sides, buttered side in, fill with everything!

RabbitsRock · 09/03/2024 19:25

I only butter one side. Agree with a pp that the other side is for mayo or similar.

Emily1583 · 09/03/2024 19:26

Surely you just get butter all over your fingers though?

LenaLamont · 09/03/2024 19:26

Both pieces, unless a different spread is also involved (mayonnaise, jam, mustard, whatever)

But always both pieces of bread; we’re not savages!

waterlellon · 09/03/2024 19:26

You should butter both sides but cost of living and all that

RampantIvy · 09/03/2024 19:27

IMO buttering one slice is cheapskate.

Neither did I suggest it would kill you. I think you must be reading things that aren't there. I haven't suggested anything about health, butter being like a class A substance, or being killed by double buttering 😂

I agree it's tasty. I just don't see the point of buttering 2 slices for a sandwich which is going to have a filling.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2024 19:29

I didn’t know buttering one side was a thing

Neither did I until I saw this thread. No-one I know is this mean spirited.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 09/03/2024 19:32

YANBU if you mean you butter the two slices of bread on the inside (ie the bit that touches the filling). Who would only butter one??

For a toastie you butter all the sides of the bread even the ones on the outside, for crisping purposes 😊

GrumpyPanda · 09/03/2024 19:32

Neither. One side mayo one side mustard for the most part.

x2boys · 09/03/2024 19:33

I assume you mean butter one side of a piece of bread Place sandwich filling on buttered side ,butter one side of another piece of bread and Place on top ,not buttering all four sides ??
Which would be frankly odd.

FourLeggedBuckers · 09/03/2024 19:33

If you only butter one side, how do you choose which piece of bread is selected for preferential treatment? Don’t you worry about the feelings of the neglected slice?!

Oh bore off

are you this difficult in real life and devoid of any humour?

Won't someone think of the bread!
