How much disposable income do you usually have left? Purely nosey and nobody has to answer. I have about £300 left in my current account. All bills have gone out and I have savings and shouldn’t need fuel until after I am paid, so it will just be top up food shop, a few train tickets and anything else I need to get. I haven’t saved anything this month 😬

Usually about £50 if I'm lucky.

It's pretty grim to be honest.

FoFanta · 09/03/2024 18:35

I work in a public service organisation in Ireland and we get paid fortnightly. After years of being paid monthly, I cannot tell you how much better it is.

Historygirl91 · 09/03/2024 18:37

I get paid a week on Monday and I have £40 left. Food shopping is done and don’t particularly need to buy anything so this is fine for me.

Millymollymaisy · 09/03/2024 18:40

Get paid next Wednesday, have about £500 available.

Kalevala · 09/03/2024 18:43

It's going to depend on family size. Enough for food and petrol plus £50, with known expenses already set aside.

Ah, I'm also public service in Ireland but I'd find it much easier to budget monthly, particularly because my husband is paid monthly and we have joint finances!

To answer OP, I'm pretty disorganised and don't move savings from my current account regularly, normally I just move it over when it builds up a bit so there's normally a good bit sitting in my current account at the end of most months.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/03/2024 18:45

About £500 but I need to put petrol in the car and do a good shop

mrsmop21 · 09/03/2024 18:45

Usually around £800-£900

innerdesign · 09/03/2024 18:46

I have no idea, I'm in the fortunate position where I don't live payday to payday (any more). I spend mainly on credit card to get reward points, pay it off at the statement date so I have no charges, keep as much as possible in an ISA, another pot of savings in a high interest (but instant access) savings account, and run my current account with enough to pay bills and tide me over without going into my overdraft. If I want to buy something I'll buy it, but obviously I need to be sensible as I have a limited budget.

Scattercushiony · 09/03/2024 18:46

£18,000 in my current account although I treat most of that as savings. In terms of how much left from my salary each month it’d be about £650 a week from payday I’d guess

Tesoroxx · 09/03/2024 18:47

I'm a week away from payday I have about £20 left and still need to do a weeks shop

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/03/2024 18:48

I always aim to have £1000 left in my bank at payday. Really I could stick it in a savings account, but I like having the buffer and have done so since I built up (slowly) that amount of money after being in an overdraft when I finished uni.

Dogskidsdogs · 09/03/2024 18:48

Get paid on 15th and have £30 left 😬. Fresh food to be bought for the week. There's never anything left but this month has been tough with unexpected costs

NotFastButFurious · 09/03/2024 18:53

@Scattercushiony why on earth don’t you put some of that in high interest savings or a tax free ISA??
any more than £2k in my current account at the end of the month and I move more into savings or off the mortgage if there isn’t a big bill coming up. Yes, I appreciate that is a very fortunate position to be in but you did ask and I’ve worked hard to be in the position I’m in (which is far from a luxurious lifestyle!)

These sorts of threads pop rather frequently in various guises, such has how much savings/disposable income/net income etc per month.
I am always curious about the aim, as there will be people in the red each month and those that will be able to save 1000s. If someone piped up with still having £5k with a week left until pay day there will no doubt be posters who say they are full of BS and anyone can make things up on anonymous forum etc (although I don’t know why anyone would).

Is it just pure nosiness @Munnymunnymunny ? - totally fine if it is, as it’s not socially acceptable to talk about money (helps keeps women in their place!), so how else to an idea of this?
Or for reassurance about your money situation - also ok for the same reasons, so no judgement from me.

Kwasi · 09/03/2024 18:54

I get paid two weeks on Monday and have £200 left. I need to do a couple of food shops (about £150 total) and probably have enough fuel left. I have paid an extra £50 into my pension this month and spent about £120 on clothes.

It’s both of those really. I have seen and participated in similar threads, know what you mean. They don’t always go down well on here but I get why people do and because you can be anonymous I guess. Like you say it’s taboo to talk about usually so if you can on here then I’m all for it.

I used to be paid weekly and I find monthly much better as my bills are monthly. The rest of the month is only food, petrol, and other expenses. With weekly or fortnightly you need to set money aside for bills.

BluebellsAndLillies · 09/03/2024 18:59

Two weeks until payday this weeks petrol and food shopping done this morning and all other bills paid, £1736 remaining out of this months salary. Will need £150 ish for next weeks food and £70 for petrol what’s left the night before payday goes straight in savings.

caringcarer · 09/03/2024 19:07

No I'm older, my DC are adults now so my money lasts just fine. It's always harder when you have little ones at home.

thecatsthecats · 09/03/2024 19:11

Maternity allowance due on the 20th. Have £898 left, and £415 in SOs, but they don't go out til April anyway.

I switched jobs whilst pregnant after I retrained, so we were able to plan carefully around mat leave. My husband's wage equals our bills plus £700ish, so he pays the full bills amount and we keep our £700 each for saving/whatever.

You'd get over 5% interest in some places if that was in a savings account.. £900 over a year! Why have it in your current account doing nothing?

Helfs · 09/03/2024 19:16

£1100 ish

DDs nursery fees have gone up so will be a bit less from next month though

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 09/03/2024 19:16

Usually start getting messages that I’ve exceeded my overdraft and have to ask my partner for a sub 😭 it’s grim. But we get free childcare from April so counting down the days…
