How much disposable income do you usually have left? Purely nosey and nobody has to answer. I have about £300 left in my current account. All bills have gone out and I have savings and shouldn’t need fuel until after I am paid, so it will just be top up food shop, a few train tickets and anything else I need to get. I haven’t saved anything this month 😬

About £50 but that's because I transfer a large percentage at the start of each month to instant access savings. If I needed more, then I'd just transfer it back. It's a good deterrent though!

WellAllBeLonelyTonightAndLonelyTomorrow · 09/03/2024 19:20

I budget £1600 a month for food, petrol and fun. DH gets paid on the 19th and we have £518 left.

HungryBeagle · 09/03/2024 19:25

I have £152 left in my current account (get paid on the 20th) but that’s because I work to a zero budget. On payday all bills are paid, all savings are moved into the appropriate accounts and the remaining money is assigned to pots (groceries, extra curriculars, etc). So all that £152 needs to pay for is a top up shop of fresh stuff next weekend.

Stressedoutforever · 09/03/2024 19:37

I'm paid the 26th, currently £193 and I have a weekend away in that time- but DH covers most of our outgoings and we use the joint, so no treats but also not too worried

Yawnnn · 09/03/2024 20:18

£1172 with 2 weeks to go, and £1000 gone into savings this month. I do appreciate I'm lucky to be in this position.

DinnaeFashYersel · 09/03/2024 20:22

In our current account - usually circa £1,500.

curlycurlymoo · 09/03/2024 20:32

I am two weeks away. All bills paid. Will get two lots of food shopping coming to about £200. So I'll have about £400 left for whatever.

Minikievs · 09/03/2024 20:34

I am three weeks away from payday and have £70 left!! Child benefit in on Monday though so £230 in reality.
I NEVER have any money left by the end of the month. I do put a small amount away at the start of the month for a holiday/birthday/Xmas pot.
If I left it til the end of the month, I wouldn't put any in the pot, as there wouldn't be anything left 🤷‍♀️
Freezer and cupboards are full though and I have a decent amount of fuel.

@Scattercushiony why on earth don’t you put some of that in high interest savings or a tax free ISA??
any more than £2k in my current account at the end of the month and I move more into savings or off the mortgage if there isn’t a big bill coming up. Yes, I appreciate that is a very fortunate position to be in but you did ask and I’ve worked hard to be in the position I’m in (which is far from a luxurious lifestyle!)

I really hate the "I've worked hard to be in this position" comments. As though those of use who are not so fortunate are also not working hard....

BeretRaspberry · 09/03/2024 20:38

It’s hard to say because all of our money is allocated to certain pots, including savings because we use YNAB. We usually have around £4000 in the current account before payday but that includes holiday savings, car maintenance fund, car insurance savings, gifts. The holiday fund becomes depleted in August and starts again in September. Gifts is depleted at Christmas and starts in Jan so it’s all swings and roundabouts.

What we have for fun money, groceries and petrol would probably add up to £400 for that last week.

However, we also have funds for clothes, dentist, medical stuff, hairdressers etc etc that some people may class as disposable.

MintyCedric · 09/03/2024 20:41

Two weeks from payday and already in my overdraft.

Work full time (term time only) and have second job - currently about 28 hours a month but hoping to add another 5 hours a week from April/May.

Joys of being a divorcee with a mortgage and a kid in uni!

I can't even imagine that. That's my entire wage to pay mortgage etc by myself

XenoBitch · 09/03/2024 20:42

Overdrawn.

hot2trotter · 09/03/2024 20:43

Usually in my overdraft

bingoringo4 · 09/03/2024 20:53

It's hard to say because I recently started cash stuffing. I pay myself every Friday for food/petrol/ gas/electric. Thursday nights I empty my purse and save what's left over from the week. In 3 weeks I've saved almost £200.

Blaggingit123 · 09/03/2024 20:54

Have about £4,200 in there at the moment - always try and keep £2k minimum and the rest will be saved - Jan-March are months where we have an excess for savings due to no holidays, birthdays or big annual expenses like car insurance, but other months (if we pay a holiday balance/go away or before Christmas) we will overspend. It all balances itself out and while we can afford holidays and home improvements we know an awful lot of people who have way more disposable income than we do. We take home a bit over £6k per month between us and even with a low mortgage payment (£800) things like private school are waaaay out of reach.

Wiaa · 09/03/2024 20:54

Usually around £4 or £5 hundred in our spends account which is for shopping food and fun stuff. We have a relatively high amount in savings and around £3k for food fuel and fun every month after bills and some small savings but we still work out what we think we need for nights out/ kids activities for the month and then split what's left between our 3 savings accounts ( 1. Xmas/birthday/holiday 2. New car/ house upgrades 3. Life savings to supplement retirement) we are fortunate that our household income is around 90k and we have zero debt other than our mortgage which luckily is on a five year fix (sub 2%) we also have enough savings to clear the mortgage next year although this will wipe out most of our savings but interest rates dictate we must clear the debt

ComeOnThenFanny · 09/03/2024 21:01

God, some of you are so fortunate. I do appreciate you've probably earned it, but I have worked full time my entire working life, and I have struggled for all of those years., I don't begrudge anyone good fortune, but I'm so fucking envious.

Oh yeah cos 4 a levels, a degree from a red brick uni, a masters in a specialist subject, buying property on a single income and being one of the most senior technical female personale in the country in your male dominated industry comes handed to you on a plate and without sacrifices!! 🚮

Legaleeagles · 09/03/2024 21:10

Every single payday... Every penny instantly goes "somewhere".
To Xmas, holiday money, savings, food petrol. So nothing is left by the end of payday.

RockyRogue1001 · 09/03/2024 21:12

Hugs for those of you who - like me - are in overdraft or tight towards the end.

Thoughts and prayers to the rest of you. You poor darlings

FarmGirl78 · 09/03/2024 21:13

Not counting savings? £130.

Onabench · 09/03/2024 21:14

-£200 🙂 a very typical month. Will probably be -£350 by pay day

WavyLines11 · 09/03/2024 21:17

Not saying you haven't made sacrifices but you're missing the point. Which is that plenty of us are working equally as hard and making sacrifices but are not as fortunate to be in the same position. And it's quite insulting when the "I worked hard to get where I am" is bandied around.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 09/03/2024 21:19

Get paid 23rd , about 300 but still have about £180 of kid related stuff to come out before payday.
