AIBU to be shocked by the Irish referendum?

Yetmorebeanstocount · 09/03/2024 16:17

I'm not from the Irish Republic. I just read what the ballot was about. I am shocked at what their constitution contained:

Article 41.2.1° “In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.”
Article 41.2.2° “The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”

I'm even more shocked that early results suggest the Irish have voted to KEEP this dire crap in their constitution.

Am I missing something?

Well then you have a say in next referendum.

That's how democracy works.

As for Catholic Churches influencing schools, no I don't see that, that waned considerably.

There is a noticeable push in educate together

Every teacher in the primary schools in my local town in Ireland are white, Irish and from the local area, yes.

I follow a woman on Instagram as I'm interested in teaching. She is in ireland

She is a black woman, and she is a student of primary school teaching in DCU

She said on Instagram that she chose to become a primary teacher,

as she never once had a black or mixed race primary teacher in ireland, when she was a child.

She said that there was a complete lack of diversity

She also shows on her Instagram page : all the abuse that she gets about being black and studying to become a primary teacher in ireland.

She showed comments that people made that said
'Fuck off back to your own country'
Why don't you teach in your own country. "You're coming over here corrupting our children. "

Because I think irelands constitution is extremely old fashioned . And this referendum has reminded me of how Conservative and traditional ireland is

If you look up the worldwide reporting on this referendum: it is not positive about ireland

Most of the news articles are calling ireland

"old fashioned" "sexist" ",traditional".

American news sites are saying "Ireland fails to update sexist wording in its constitution"

Ok Sashamalia. You don't live here and don't have the first fucking clue what you are on about. Maybe get outside and enjoy the fine weather you love so much. Also maybe read up a bit on Spanish history and the recent patriarchal society brought about by fucking Franco. I mean Jesus. You can't complain about the patriarchy in Ireland with any sort of high ground if your solution is to move to Spain.

If you feel you will have to come back here to look after your parents at some point then you should be immensely grateful to everyone who voted no yesterday or that task would have been made a hell of a lot harder for you by yes votes.

Seriously. When you are so utterly clueless about a topic, maybe read up on it extensively before mouthing off from a position of complete and utter ignorance.

DublinFemale · 10/03/2024 10:57

Seriously we are a very young country regards re independence. Just over 100yrs old.

We are making great strides but it takes time.

100yrs is a drop in ocean in terms of independent governance.

You're incorrect I'm afraid. In many areas there is only one educate together school, the majorit of schools are still catholic, and the educated together school do not have enough places for children.

DublinFemale · 10/03/2024 11:00

Ok then so educate together stats are incorrect

Alrighty then 👍👍

CNN are saying "Ireland fails to update sexist wording in its constitution"

I don't believe CNN fully understands the proposal or it's implications for those of us who live here. It's all too easy for foreign press to make out we're all dumb muck savages who want to keep women tied to the kitchen sink.

There was almost no diversity until about 30/25 years ago. That goes some way to explaining a lack of POC in teaching for example. When I was young, in the west, there were very very few black people. The country has transformed in a relatively short space of time and it's great to see the diversity now that wasn't there when I was young. It's a totally different country now than it was in say 1990. Unrecognisable almost.

Nasty, childish, Idiotic and aggressive post . Who brought you up to talk like that, were you dragged up? Your post is a nasty piece of work

I do know "what the fuck I'm talking about"

I just moved to spain last week.

I was in ireland for the last three years.

I was there in ireland all this year when they talked about the referendum. I read everything about it. So yes I do know "what the fuck I'm talking about". Jesus youre so arrogant.

A huge amount of schools regardless of ethos are over subscribed, that is down piss poor government funding not the church.

Maybe just maybe 🤔 if they of spent the wasted 23million on education and created more school places ET and other schools would not have crazy waiting lists

While you are correct on the influence of the Catholic church on the Irish education system, do you know that the position in Spain is much worse? Unlike Ireland, Spain is actually a catholic country and it's schools are under contract with the Holy See.

What I can never understand is that ireland is meant to be one of the wealthiest countries in Europe..

Yet they never seem to spend any money updating vital services. The bus and train system in ireland is shockingly bad.

DublinFemale · 10/03/2024 11:09

You lived in Ireland for 3yrs, 3yrs!!! and you are lecturing us on Ireland

If the referendum was so important to you, you could have waited until after referendum to emigrate or even come back to vote. Irish immigrants can vote in irish referendum for 18months after leaving I think

Could be wrong, need to research that.

Deadringer · 10/03/2024 11:12

Sashamalia · 10/03/2024 10:29

I'm irish. I now live in spain

I would never go back.
I honestly think that ireland is such a difficult country to live in. For so many reasons.

1)There is not much to do in ireland.
In the medium towns in ireland there is not much to do except sport and drinking

  1. in my opinion ireland is very patriarchal and old fashioned

3,) there is extreme tribal mentality, when yoy meet people in medium town ireland, people check not just who you are , but who your parents are. They want to know everything about you, about how respectable your family is. They prefer you if your parents and grandparents also grew up in the town otherwise you are called a blow in

Here in spain, if i meet people, they dont care about my parents, grandparents, cousins
, they just want to know about me.

People approve of you if you fit into their mold of acceptability In ireland. This also leads into unfairness in Job hiring. As people hire who is well known and seen to be from a good family in the community.

For example in the two primary schools in my home town in ireland.

Every one of the teachers to this day are white and irish, from locl families and from "good" families in the area.
This leads to complete lack of diversity in teachers in schools
4) the Catholic Church still has a huge influence on schools in ireland. When it shouldnt have.
5) Lack of amenities
6) lack of good public transport
7) its always raining in ireland .Really bad weather
8) everything is hugely expensive
9) rent prices are crazy.

I just went to a yoga class here in spain. My yoga teacher is also irish. She just saiyoto me that she'd never go back.

Ireland might suit some people but I'm so happy I'm out of it.

When did you leave, 1920? And what is this yoga thing you mention, sounds foreign.

I didn't see anyone here say it was perfect? And from what I've seen'read, British transport isn't always the Mae west either. You're very much putting me in mind of a poster who was stuck in Ireland against her will having to mind an ageing parent. She hated the place and wasn't willing to do anything to try and improve her situation until she could leave. Just wanted to lecture Craicnet about what a dreadful, backwards shit hole our country was. If that's the attitude one chooses to adopt, the likelihood is, one won't be particularly happy.

Jesus. Can you read?

I didn't write "I lived in ireland for three years"

Did I?

Look back. Read again

I said " I was in ireland for the last three years".

Before that , i lived and worked in spain for two years.

I grew up in ireland. I lived in ireland for thirty years. Then I went to work in spain. Then I went back to Ireland for three years. Now I'm back in spain

I'm not sure how you couldn't grasp that from what I've said?

Have you never left ireland for work? Really? Most people that I know from ireland have all gone to work in other countries for several years

DublinFemale · 10/03/2024 11:17

As I said, that is piss poor government spending.

The money is there just being spent poorly.

And the last election LV was told clearly we don't want him it took 5 counts for him to win his seat.

.

No I left a week ago.

And just a week ago in ireland people were complaining to me about the extremely high rent prices.

I'm not sure why you're saying that's not happening now?

It's very tough for a lot of people in ireland right now. It's sad. I know a lot of people struggling
