To be shocked and embarrassed by my friends behaviour today

Bumped into a friend today at the local Tesco’s . She was in a check out queue , I stopped to chat . There was a woman with a screaming baby in a sling and a screaming toddler in a trolley . The poor woman looked totally stressed out , she started to put her shopping on the check out conveyer belt (I’m not sure she realised my friend was in the queue) my friend snapped at her , told her she’d jumped the queue. The woman asked if my friend minded if she went first as she’d got two screaming children. My friend told her no and added she might have considered it if she hadn’t pushed in front . She then told the woman’s screaming toddler to shut up ! I might add my friend doesn't have kids and it would seem not much empathy either .

Struggling to picture the scenario where you are in a queue at a supermarket but it isn't clear you are in the queue, tbh.
There are lots of different supermarkets round here, with slightly different set ups but none of them would it not be obvious if you actually were in the queue and not just hovering nearby chatting to your friend.

The only think I can think is that mum in a daze and just didn't notice some of the self service tills can be busy

Love how you thought you “might add” that she has no kids, as of course all women without kids are callous toddler-shaming mum-hating hags.

Of course friend WBU, but you know that. You just want MN to slag off your friend, for reasons best known to you.

No need for your last paragraph tbh just be firm but nice

Are you usually so weak? Why is it worth mentioning she doesn't have kids?

Estellaa · 09/03/2024 17:30

I'm with the friend. How fucking rude and entitled of the pusher in. I wouldn't have let her go in front of me either 🤷‍♀️

I don’t understand why ppl have to be so nasty ..she probably said it being naive

Oooh well she doesn't have children, so what can you expect?

😂

Classic rudeness on MN.

Sometimes a stern word from someone else can work wonders on a toddler ime!!

Shut up is a bit far.

I wouldn’t have let her gone in front of me either, if I was in a rush and the woman was rude

I would have lost my shit if a stranger told one of my children to shut up. Strangers have helped with my children in the past, I’ve been grateful, but shut is an awful way to speak to a toddler.

Is she usually like this? Or is it a one off?

Gloriosaford · 09/03/2024 17:53

you can have some fun giving her a taste of her own medicine OP

Hellogoodbyehello4321 · 09/03/2024 17:55

This seems rather designed as a childless v ppl with children debate. Of course she's a selfish child hater if she is childless 🙄

I dont agree with her telling the child to shut up but tbh I can kind of see her pov about not letting the woman go in front of her. If ppl with screaming children always got to go to the front , other ppl would spend their lives waiting in a queue.

I think its nice to be offered a place in front & quite often do offer someone struggling or few items etc, and I've had it offered to me too, but don't think I've ever asked anyone as my circumstances aren't their problem.

Its a fair question, it IS weak to witness that from a friend and do/say nothing.

Catnip19 · 09/03/2024 18:00

yourlobster · 09/03/2024 16:13

So a random stranger telling an upset toddler to shut up is ok then?

Ha! I’ve worked in retail where people tell the toddler, “the lady will tell you off of you don’t stop”

So why not.

Also, the woman with the screaming kids was entitled and shouldn’t have pushed in.

Naive of what?

bagpuss90 · 09/03/2024 16:37

This friend is known for being outspoken and she has upset quite a few people over the years .

Isn't 'outspoken' just code for bloody rude? If this were my friend I'd have told her there and then that she's out of order!

Nicetobenice67 · 09/03/2024 18:11

GreyBlackLove · 09/03/2024 18:01

Naive of what?

saying my friend doesn’t have kids it was a silly thing to say but she doesn’t need to be called weak

Boomboxio · 09/03/2024 18:12

I think anyone with an ounce of empathy would have just let her carry on without saying anything, I would have.

Not many people would purposely and blatantly skip a queue in the UK, you'd assume it was a genuine mistake on this woman's part.

I wouldn't go out of my way to keep in touch with someone like your friend, unless this was massively out of character.

Silly? It's clearly pointed. Certainly not naive.

I asked the OP if they are weak for allegedly witnessing that and saying/doing nothing to her friend.
