Hot tub hoggers

KimberleyClark · 08/03/2024 09:53

Went for a swim at my gym yesterday afternoon. There was a group of five people in the tub when I entered the pool. They were still there when I finished my swim 45 minutes later. AIBU to think this is inconsiderate and selfish? There is a notice on the wall asking people not to use it for more than 15 minutes which is ignored by most people.

I go to a gym with a hot tub/spa pool. I just get in when I want to. There’s no need to wait and there’s no need for anyone to get out unless it’s full.

Exactly- it’s not a huge issue is it? Unless you pay for exclusivity then you can’t really moan. What you do is what most people do

Hmcs · 11/03/2024 07:06

what kind of gym
is it?
is it one that offers spa days
because i wouldn’t get out after 15mins if ive paid for a spa day

I was expecting replies of this nature. This really isn’t the point of the thread.

What is the point of the thread? You already know you're not wrong to think they are being selfish.

InSpainTheRain · 11/03/2024 17:07

Just get in - I find that usually a group stay in. They then all leave if I muscle in :)

Grapewrath · 11/03/2024 17:12

I’d just get in otherwise they might presume there’s nobody waiting or bothered about the tub.. therefore carry on using it.

Yes it does offer spa days. I’ll be going for a swim again on Friday so shall try and be more assertive.

We cannot control what people do. If everyone acted considerately there'd be no crime.

All we can control is how we respond.

CrispFanatic · 11/03/2024 18:47

YABU. If someone asked me to move and I’d been there ages then I would but if they didn’t then I’d assume that the hot tub was fair game and I could stay there 🤷‍♀️

Deathbyfluffy · 11/03/2024 18:50

Noglitterallowed · 10/03/2024 16:08

Surely if they are paying to be there they can spend their time where they want? Would you also moan about someone swimming/gyming for that long aswel?

Did you not see the part where there’s a sign limiting them to 15 minutes?

To be honest I wouldn’t even pay to be a member of a place that’s states this- also who is timing themselves while chilling out and relaxing after paying to be there. Also who times other people??? It’s madness! Is there someone there with a whistle every time someone reaches their limit? It’s madness

It's a courtesy to leave after 15 minutes not law. They're doing nothing wrong.

It's not illegal to unplug the hot tub either

TellMyMum · 11/03/2024 19:05

I’m a member at at hotel that has a jacuzzi/pool/gym/steam room etc and offers spa days.

This happens a lot. I don’t think it is selfish unless there are people stood next to it waiting to get in (and no room for them rather than waiting to have it to themselves). Just get in. Probably fits six and they’re probably get out when they see you start to get ready to get in…as a group of five it would be selfish not to really, but if you don’t clearly indicate you want to get in…

It is unlikely the 15 minute sign has anything to do with being courteous. It is likely to prevent heat exhaustion (or to show that there was an effort being made to prevent heat exhaustion in case of a lawsuit). Same idea as signs indicating restrictions for pregnant women or people with heart conditions.

Many people sit in hot tubs for longer amounts of time. I would get in the tub and join the people already there. The 15 minute sign is unlikely to mean that people are supposed to take 15 minute turns, it is to indicate that there is a risk of heat exhaustion if one stays in the tub too long. That's why people ignore it. They aren't feeling overheated so they just stay in the tub.

some of our hot tub hoggers would know how long they've been in there, seen so many in there with their phones 🙄

plus a massive clock in sight of ours

pickledandpuzzled · 12/03/2024 09:39

There’s a group of men that sit in the hot tub at my mum’s gym. She goes for the aqua fit and they sit and watch the whole class. She’s not impressed.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/03/2024 09:46

Just get in. No need to wait for anyone to leave. If there's no space just ask them to budge up.

VestibuleVirgin · 12/03/2024 09:51

For the hot tub supporters here, would you share your bathe at home with strangers?

KimberleyClark · 12/03/2024 10:01

One issue with the hot tub I have is that I’m short and I can’t just sit anywhere in the tub as in some areas my head will be half under and unless I’m hanging on to the sides like grim death I have no purchase and I’m flailing about everywhere. This is why aI prefer to get in when there’s only one or two in there.

Yes, they are. The pool/club rules are clear and well signposted- 15 mins max. Simple as that.

Not without having the water adequately chlorinated (or treated with some other sanitizer).

SoDoneIn · 12/03/2024 19:33

Get in with them, talk about you’ve just farted and isn’t it great they can’t tell cos of the bubbles, and then say “oops followed through” and soon you’ll have a hot tub to yourself.

You beat me to it! I was about to say: get in, have a wee, get out!

I'm not sure I'd want to get in a public sex-pond with 5 strangers, especially if they've been in there for 45 minutes, who knows what human detritus will be floating about in it?

I’m sure people aren’t having sex in it 😁
with the chlorine in there it is no more dirty then a pool

Can you kneel instead? Ours is very bubbly and they're are only certain places I can be without soaking my phone. I mainly find kneeling works quite well and it's quite comfy.
