I'm not a labour voter but I could potentially be persuaded for obvious reasons right now

I'd like to believe a new government could do 'something' to stem the rot in the NHS. But I'm not convinced.

Do you think it will help?

I am a labour voter but sadly the NHS in Wales is shambolic. I’m not sure if they’ll improve the NHS in England that much. Nor will the tories though I guess. I’m hoping labour will improve education and school funding

itsnotallfunandgames · 07/03/2024 21:07

Yes.

NHS was vastly improved under last Labour government. 4-hour waiting times in A&E were achieved. Cancer referral times were achieved.

First thing incoming Tory government did was remove all the targets. Funnily enough, now you can be in A&E for 12 hours, maybe die waiting.

Of course a Labour government will improve the NHS. They did it before and can do it again. Of course, the NHS is in a much worse condition now than in 1997 cos of 14 years of poor government by a worse bunch of Tories than before. So it will be a harder job, and we will likely need more than 1 term of Labour government.

The party that created the NHS under Bevin is what is needed now. Stop voting for the Tories.

EmmaEmerald · 07/03/2024 21:09

No because Wales seems to show the problem isn’t money

though I didn’t think that was the current issue

it’s bureaucracy and over ambitious things like IT projects, procurement processes etc.

ETA mum’s had an 18 and 22 hour wait for a bed. I’m well aware of the staffing issues but I think they are too deep for labour to solve.

im old enough to remember that it was much better under Labour but it feels like Labour either has no plans or want to keep them secret!

Ilikewinter · 07/03/2024 21:09

No. I dont think any party can solve it without massive overhaul and making some very tough decisions...that no party will have the balls to do.

SleepingisanArt · 07/03/2024 21:10

No - they won't have the money it needs. They won't (no politicians will regardless of their party) take 'unpopular ' decisions which are needed to make it properly fit for purpose. That's the problem with it being run by people who basically win a popularity contest to get into power and be in charge.

LakieLady · 07/03/2024 21:12

I think it will improve under a Labour government, but fixing it is such a mammoth job that it will take decades.

BotterMon · 07/03/2024 21:13

The NHS isn't recoverable. Our health care system needs a complete overhaul and cutting NI again will just accelerate the current system's demise.

gershwinsdog · 07/03/2024 21:15

I think labour would put more money in the NHS and it would go on wage increases. Can't see any improvement in service

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/03/2024 21:17

I agree it's gone beyond the point where mere political tinkering will solve anything, especially with the institutional resistance to reform

For me the real conversation will be what takes the place of the current arrangements; trouble is it's such a hot potato that I doubt any current party has the will to do anything much

foodtoorder · 07/03/2024 21:18

Absolutely not.
Whichever government is in power can only provide so much funding to keep it running on a basic level.
No one wants to make the decision of what needs to be cut or privately paid for by the public.

Pussycat22 · 07/03/2024 21:19

The NHS would improve if people made better lifestyle choices and not expect the NHS to treat the outcomes of said choices.!!

fabio12 · 07/03/2024 21:21

I think the Tories have done too much damage over too long to save it.
I don't know what the solution is, but like everything else, Labour are inheriting a complete shitshow.

foodtoorder · 07/03/2024 21:21

@Pussycat22 people make those choices based on health inequalities.
Not as black and white as having choices sadly.

BIossomtoes · 07/03/2024 21:25

The last Labour government improved the NHS beyond all recognition so I have high hopes of the next one. I like Streeting’s approach. I’ll never forgive Andrew Lansley for taking a sledgehammer to it when it was functioning so well - or Cameron for allowing him to do it.

Hatty65 · 07/03/2024 21:26

I think it will improve, and they can't be any worse than the Tories.

goingdownfighting · 07/03/2024 21:26

Long time Tory voter here. I am probably going to vote Labour but I don't know what their plans actually are.

The NHS is an errant monster at the moment. Not sure how anyone is going to tackle it. Lots of poorly negotiated contracts by all previous governments.

inkblackheart · 07/03/2024 21:31

Don’t be silly. The problem with the nhs is too many layers of management and not enough medics. Labour won’t sack anyone and they won’t go against the medical union’s wishes to keep medical school numbers suppressed.

it will get worse not better

NamelessNancy · 07/03/2024 21:31

I think so. The destruction of the NHS has, imo been ideological and deliberate.

AIBU to ask if you believe that a labour government will go some way to fixing the NHS?
Noicant · 07/03/2024 21:31

No i think it will carry on declining.

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/03/2024 21:31

Wes Streeting talks more about reform than investment.

This 100%👏👏👏

ILoveSalmonSpread · 07/03/2024 21:33

I believe that any Labour government will be left with a massive black hole In government spending like in previous decades.
The Tories will then reconfigure then attack the overspending in order to win power.

And no, I have never voted Labour or Tory in over four decades.

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2024 21:34

No, unfortunately. Given the number of Labour run city councils facing bankruptcy, I do not think Labour have a better handle on finances than the current sorry lot. I think unless we have a complete readjustment to government, as a country we are totally shafted.

PictureFrameWindow · 07/03/2024 21:35

Yes, Starmer ran a government department. I do believe that Labour will focus on delivery. That's a step up from this incompetent shower.

BIossomtoes · 07/03/2024 21:36

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/03/2024 21:31

Wes Streeting talks more about reform than investment.

Of course he does. Reform’s badly needed and the Tories’ scorched earth policy has left no money to invest, at least initially. It was a combination of reform and investment that brought about improvement last time round.
