Hey Guys! Vs Hey Team!

In the 90s, I remember when people addressed a group of people as "hey guys and gals!" But then it got shortened to just "guys".

It really pees me off that they dropped addressing women and girls from a crowd. Why?

No one says "see that guy over there?" When it is a woman they're referring to, but a crowd of mixed sex people are defaulted to being male. In my mind, a "guy" is a male. Guy is an actual male name and saying "guys" feels sexist.

My amazing Yoga teacher addresses everyone as "Team" and I think this is really uplifting and inclusive! She will say "Ok Team, take a deep breath!" Or "Well done Team!" I feel included, confident and valued when addressed as part of a team.

The other day I went to visit a petting farm and a woman addressed a group of pregnant ewes as "guys" and I found it so utterly weird.

So I made a meme and ask, if you agree, to share it.

I'm on my mobile so can't activate the voting, apologies!

YABU - "Guys" is shorthand for women and for men

YANBU - "Team" instead of guys works better for addressing a mixed sex crowd of people

Fwiw, “Hey Team” makes me cringe!!! Just awful!

Indeed, it's like getting hit with horrible corporate speak. OK team, let's go team ugh stfu

ColleenDonaghy · 05/03/2024 14:41

Guys, lads (in Ireland anyway) and dudes are all used informally for groups of either or mixed sex.

It is interesting and based in sexism that there are no similar terms with a female origin, but the use of the terms isn't sexist in itself.

Team is truly awful.

I've actually just covered the use of "guys" in an English writing class. A lot of my students use it as in "the guys in the room were...".
I've pointed out that when used in this way, it still refers to males only, whereas as a direct address "hi guys" the language has evolved to include both male and female.

I agree

turkeyboots · 05/03/2024 14:44

Lads is unisex in Ireland, but isn't great. Especially when you are the head of an all girls school addressing the girls.

Hey team is werid. Yoga isn't a team sport. Hey Folks really annoys me as I associate it with an annoying coworker. We need better plurals for people.

bingoitsadingo · 05/03/2024 14:44

I don’t mind team in a situation where we’re actually a team (e.g. a sport or at work) but I’d find it really cringey and fake at something like a yoga class where I’m working as an individual.

But then I have no problem with using guys as a gender neutral term. I quite like it and often use it in all-female settings.

WaltzingWaters · 05/03/2024 14:45

I’m a woman. I use “hey guys” when referring to my female friends or a mixed group regularly. Other friends do too. (Not in a professional/work situation). I much prefer that to “hey team” personally.

MassageForLife · 05/03/2024 14:48

I would rather be included in a group addressed as 'guys' than one addressed as 'gals'.

SallyWD · 05/03/2024 14:49

Am I the only one who's more annoyed about the "hey"? To me it feels like a recent thing that people have started saying "hey" instead of "hi", "hello" or "dear so and so". I find "hey" very irritating.

Elphamouche · 05/03/2024 14:49

I hate Team. I prefer guys.

But cunts is the best.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 05/03/2024 14:49

I don't mind 'guys'. I would use guys for a fully female group too.

I do however object to myself and colleagues being called fucking 'girlies' in a professional environment - gives me the absolute rage.

Would take guys, lads, folks, even bloody 'peeps' over 'girlies' any day of the week!

B1anche · 05/03/2024 14:50

My boss often uses the word "folks' when addressing our mixed team. It's less cringey than 'team' and less likely to cause upset than 'guys'.

The 'cunt' suggestion is my fave though!

SwordToFlamethrower · 05/03/2024 14:51

I wonder why we dont have a female collective word that means everyone? Always seems to be male rooted doesn't it.

Dudes
Guys
Lad
Bro
Man

What's the female equivelant?

I've happily called a group or single bloke "sis" or "girls" and said "don't worry, it's gender neutral.

I'm actually sick of the male default for everyone and everything.

Revelatio · 05/03/2024 14:51

I hate Team. It really gets to me and I’m not usually wound up by words. It has connotations of ‘my team’, as in we work for them when they’re not a line manager. I’ve only ever heard men say ‘team’. I find it patronising.

ChristianHornersGlisteningFinger · 05/03/2024 14:53

Unless you are a synchronised yoga squad who tour the world competing for medals, surely you are not a team at all?

At best you are a group, but you’re really just a load of people doing something for their individual benefit the same time. Could she call you “class” perhaps?

Hey team is fine for work though, and also sport of course. Or a quiz night.

“You GUYS!” is beloved of Americans talking to all-female groups - think Legally Blonde or Clueless.

Justcallmebebes · 05/03/2024 14:53

I say guys. I have several young grandkids of mixed sex and I refer to them collectively as guys.

Not sure "Come on cunts" would go down so well

HauntedBungalow · 05/03/2024 14:55

'Hey' is for Yanquis and other such gun crazy degenerates.

'Good morning ' or 'good afternoon ' is the proper greeting for proper decent people. If you are unable to distinguish between morning or afternoon due to disability or lack of access to a clock, then 'Salutations' is acceptable.

I'm not even going to get started on 'guys'.

'Team' is for members of a sporting squad. Footballers and the like (who are also, if it needs to be said, degenerates.)

People standing in a group near you are not your 'team'. They are people standing in a group.

Therefore the correct greeting is: SALUTATIONS, PEOPLE STANDING IN A GROUP.

Why do you have pictures of brains?

TheMessiahIsMySister · 05/03/2024 14:55

I don’t get why ’hey team’ is better than the second or third options on the meme.

I’d much prefer ‘hey everyone’ over ‘hey team’, which feels a bit motivational speaker / life coach / guru for me….

Geebray · 05/03/2024 14:56

NotestoSelf · 05/03/2024 14:29

'Lads' is completely unisex in Ireland. It might be addressed to an all-female group.

If someone addressed I group I was in as 'Team!' I would assume they'd just returned from a California-flavoured management seminar and those adressed would be rolling their eyes.

I wonder how the male lads would feel being addressed as lasses? 🤔

GwinGwyn · 05/03/2024 14:58

“Hey all…”

Works doesn’t it?

HauntedBungalow · 05/03/2024 14:59

What's the female equivelant?

Bitches.

It doesn't go down well in the workplace though.
