Hey Guys! Vs Hey Team!

In the 90s, I remember when people addressed a group of people as "hey guys and gals!" But then it got shortened to just "guys".

It really pees me off that they dropped addressing women and girls from a crowd. Why?

No one says "see that guy over there?" When it is a woman they're referring to, but a crowd of mixed sex people are defaulted to being male. In my mind, a "guy" is a male. Guy is an actual male name and saying "guys" feels sexist.

My amazing Yoga teacher addresses everyone as "Team" and I think this is really uplifting and inclusive! She will say "Ok Team, take a deep breath!" Or "Well done Team!" I feel included, confident and valued when addressed as part of a team.

The other day I went to visit a petting farm and a woman addressed a group of pregnant ewes as "guys" and I found it so utterly weird.

So I made a meme and ask, if you agree, to share it.

I'm on my mobile so can't activate the voting, apologies!

YABU - "Guys" is shorthand for women and for men

YANBU - "Team" instead of guys works better for addressing a mixed sex crowd of people

“Hey all…”

Works doesn’t it?

That will very quickly become "hey y'all" when people speak quickly. And we all know how we feel about Americanisms <faints>

What's the female equivelant?

Bitches.

It doesn't go down well in the workplace though.

And now I'm going to have to fight the urge to bounce into work "what's up bitches!" tomorrow. Most of my colleagues are men too!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/03/2024 15:02

Team is not appropriate at a yoga class - she's the instructor, not the leader of your "team". "Everyone" would be much better.

TenThousandSpoons · 05/03/2024 15:03

Hey team is awful. Very Denholm Reynholm from IT Crowd.

Don’t mind guys.

PaddingtonsHat · 05/03/2024 15:04

Would you have referred to the sheep as a team?? Not sure it’s completely interchangable

Geebray · 05/03/2024 14:56

I wonder how the male lads would feel being addressed as lasses? 🤔

Exactly this! Why lads and not lasses?

Oh my gosh, I was wondering why it was making me twitch - yes very Denholm!

Accompanied by putting on leg up on the desk while wearing padded cycling shorts! 🩳 🤭

Good point! For the sheep, surely "sheep/ewes" would have been appropriate when teaching children animal names though

I don't like guys, lads, dudes etc for mixed sex groups. Just feels inherently sexist. Interesting point about Guys meaning badly dressed though!
Female equivalents aren't much better -- bitches/cunts would probably get me fired at work 😂

I find being addressed as “guys “:utterly cringe worthy because it sounds like someone is trying to be cool, but I don’t find it sexist. To be honest I think I would find “hey team!” just as annoying.

I agree.

Words evolve over time. Guys, is one of those that's changed from specifically men, to a group of people.

Perhaps someone there are men lamenting the death of 'their' word 🙄

‘Team’ is pretty normal in fitness classes (they pretty much all end it with ‘great work today, team’) - I have no issue with it there, but definitely prefer ‘everyone’ in any other scenario.

Gatekeeper · 05/03/2024 15:10

Whats wrong with saying "hello/hi everyone "

Wallywobbles · 05/03/2024 15:16

I'd rather be a guy than a gal?

HauntedBungalow · 05/03/2024 15:19

Talk to your GP.

Thepeopleversuswork · 05/03/2024 15:20

Both “guys” and “team” are cringe. It’s the assumption of familiarity and chumminess. Makes me embarrassed on behalf of the person sending the message.

Can’t we just send a message saying “Hi …”

Why do we need a faux matey prefix anyway?

Yes. Based on a novel by Tibor Fischer.

INeedToClingToSomething · 05/03/2024 15:22

No one (commonly) said "guys and gals" in the 90s! Guys was a gender neutral term back then too. Very common the address emails as "Hi guys" to groups of men and women or just women only. Literally never seen anyone address an email to "guys and gals". Not sure why people have decided to taking offence at it when it's been in common usage that way for decades. But taking offence at nothing seems to be common practice in the 2010s and 20s. And that would have been eye rolled at in the 90s. Being easily offended and attention seeking were considered negative traits back then.....

Busyhedgehog · 05/03/2024 15:25

I don't like "Team" unless we are actually doing some sort of team-based activity. To be fair, I'd prefer people not talking to me at all...and I hate team-based activities.

One of my colleagues addresses her classes with "Hey, friends", which I find ridiculous. I like the children in my class but they are not my friends. It sounds stupidly cutesy.

TheMessiahIsMySister · 05/03/2024 15:26

When speaking to a group of all women, ‘hey girls’ isn’t OK because it’s infantilising, and ‘hey ladies’ isn’t OK because it’s patronising.

’Hey women’ works about as well as ‘hey men’ (i.e. it doesn’t).

So you’re left with ‘hey everyone’ (preferred), or, unfortunately, ‘hey guys’.

CurlewKate · 05/03/2024 15:30

Hmm. How about we have ladies, girls, lasses, gals as the gender neutral term?

SiobhanSharpe · 05/03/2024 15:30

I loathe being addressed as 'guys' when I'm in a mixed group. I'm tempted to enquire if a person (usually young) has vision problems if they don't acknowledge the women in the group. It feels over-casual and sexist, bordering on impolite. It's almost always unnecessary too.
Happily, I have never been addressed as 'guys' in a more formal setting, like a decent restaurant, or by anyone over the age of about 40. (And it's always inappropriate when addressing a mixed group of older people. They are not your friends or your peers.)
The converse is even more sexist. You see it most when some army/PT instructor or similar alpha male twat deliberately addresses a group of men as 'ladies.' They are making a point, and it's aimed at insulting and demeaning the men.
