I'd like to know if there are other life forms on other planets. (Sentient or basic)

I am now subscribing to the Dark Forest way of thinking about it, so much less comfortable with sending out all of those messages, but am intensely curious about the “Wow” signal, which hasn't been explained away to many astronomers' satisfaction.

I'd like to know why light changes from a wave to particles (can't remember which way round it is) according to whether it's being observed.

Off topic but I have beaten the sock elves. I have a net washing bag that the socks go in. It seems elves can't undo zips - well not in our house they can't. Please don't send your elves over to teach my elves how to undo zips

My theory on the colour of black box being orange is so it’s easier to find 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Which makes sense. But why are they called black boxes and not orange boxes?

Which makes sense. But why are they called black boxes and not orange boxes?

From Britannica: "Although Warren's recorder, as produced commercially by S. Davall & Son beginning in 1960, was housed in an egg-shaped casing that was painted red, the term black box, which arose during World War II as slang for sensitive aircraft components that were encased in black metal boxes, was applied to the device."

But why are they called black boxes and not orange boxes?

an orange box sounds misleadingly like a fruit crate.

how my dd manages to get to not get a speck on her going out playing in the muck clothes while having breakfast/ dinner but as soon as I put her going out for dinner with my mother outfit on she manages to get ketchup/ soot/ ink/ egg yolk on it even though there is nothing in the vicinity capable of making a stain

Anti-semitism? Huh? Where?

Possibly you describing a very common Jewish-sounding name as 'hideous'.

I was under the impression that black boxes had been named after the person who invented them having the surname Black, but I can't see any suggestion of this being true at all.

Maybe it came from the use of the word black (before more enlightened times) to mean a bad/negative time/thing - such as 'a black day', 'a black mark' - or the colour black being associated with funerals and mourning, which would probably sadly be following soon after in the event of a flight recorder needing to be accessed.

I don't understand it either

When I look at photographs from the time before I was born, I can’t quite grasp that when that image was taken I didn’t exist, in any shape or form. Photos with my older siblings for instance before I was born, hard to imagine that I just wasn’t there, not because I was sleeping etc I can’t explain the feeling, it’s just weird.

I know it’s not a mystery as such but just thought I’d add it! 😆

keenhell · 09/03/2024 14:10

I suppose the mystery is, why do I feel so weird and if it’s only me that feels this way?

I find it weirder that you did exist in any shape or form, in the form of eggs and seeds centuries ago that got together to make people who got together to nake people who got together to make you. You were there at an atomic level inside the bodies of total strangers.

That's weird.

PenCreed · 09/03/2024 14:24

Why did/do so many women find Mick Hucknall sexy? Watching old TOTP last night and he’s not got nearly as much stage presence/appeal as Jarvis Cocker (Pulp were also on), and a lot more smarm. It’s such a mystery to me!

Maybe the same reason that at least five (nearly six) women have at some point found Rupert Murdoch so desirable that they actually want him as a husband. He must just have a beautiful soul and be a wonderfully kind, caring, compassionate person.

I'm sure being very rich, famous and powerful have nothing at all to do with it...

@pizzaHeart

It was my Valentine's present :-)

We have been out of the UK for several years so getting back in to the joys of "easter egg" chocolate.

I found it!

It was hiding behind some bottles of wine in the pantry. It was also still in the box which I was convinced I had thrown away so I was looking for a small, foil, half egg-shaped thing when I should have been looking for a big yellow cardboard box.

Keeping the teaspoons company maybe?

I solved the teaspoon mystery when DS was about 6. Turns out he was chucking the spoon away with the empty yoghurt pot from his packed lunch 😂

It wasn't my post, I didn't describe the name as hideous. Though it's a bit of a stretch to see antisemitism in an opinion on a name. A name like Steven Stevens or Robert Roberts or William Williams would be equally as ridiculous.

Apologies, my mistake - of course it wasn't you who said that.

I agree with 'double' names sounding silly, although I wouldn't go as far as describing them as 'hideous'. I wasn't saying personally that I agreed the comment was necessarily anti-Semitic; just pointing out (albeit mistakenly to the wrong person!) that that was probably what led to the other poster's accusation.

My youngest did that too, realised when I found a teaspoon in the bin in an empty yoghurt pot.

The way people hold their phone when talking - what's that about? Am I alone in just holding it to my ear ?
