To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

Someone has possibly already said this, but it’s cue not queue…to queue or a queue is waiting your turn…cue is to get ready for something

SuperstarDeejay · 03/03/2024 21:38

I saw a 'stag doo' on here the other day.

Isn't 'do' one of the first 20 words we learn? When we're about 4? I think fazed/phased is understandable in some ways, if people weren't avid readers beyond primary school they probably didn't see those words a lot. But do? Surely everyone knows do?!

Poor SPAG is depressing imho. Texting and SM speak has trashed the English language.

I wouldn't come on a thread and take the piss out of someone who'd written Chester Draws or "we should of ..." but it's very sad that people nowadays don't seem to care about written language.

I wouldn't criticise online but I'm definitely acknowledging it in my head!

Place marking . I LOVE this thread !

Queue…. I lived in Canada in the late 80’s. Placed queue on a scrabble board (could not believe my luck) and was challenged by all who were shocked i was right.

When I see a poster correcting a pp I thank them for taking one for the team.

I was born a pedant and I honestly can't help it. I simply can't explain the almost physical sensation I get when I see common mistakes - it feels like everything's getting out of control. Not my control, just general communication anarchy. It's unsettling for me.

My friends take the piss and I call it my "disease".

I fully understand it gets right on people's tits, so I try hard not to act on these impulses, but the force is strong.

I don't feel superior, I guess I just want things to be in order. It's like word OCD.

I make mistakes, but I correct them. I remember writing "a fit of peak" in something I wrote to my cousin, and later seeing it was actually "fit of pique". I had to phone her to correct my error even though a year or so had passed 🙄

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 03/03/2024 23:06

Not sure if it's been mentioned but frequently seen is "to baulk" at something when it should be "to balk".
Again it comes from hearing the word rather than having seen it written down.

The me/I errors and it's not even a difficult rule.

I just want you to know that you're not alone, you may be a complete weirdo but there's at least one other weirdo in this world just like you Grin. You articulated it perfectly.

I still remember that time I was overthinking and typed 'seperate' in an email to my Dad, it was at least 20 years ago and he's been gone for half of that.

I think that the reason is that we do not learn “do” with the meaning of “occasion” or “party” at that age, so people are thinking it must be spelled differently when it has that meaning.

To be acknowledged by just a single fellow weirdo is an unexpected comfort 😊.

Your "separate" anecdote did make me chuckle.

Isittimeformynapyet · 04/03/2024 00:27

I meant "seperate". Bloody autocorrect!

User373433 · 04/03/2024 00:28

I'm generally a stickler for these things, but I'm now a bit concerned that I may have been guilty of this one, though I am not totally sure. Thank you OP for pointing this out. Now I will be annoyed when I see it too...

User373433 · 04/03/2024 00:33

I've just used the search function on Messenger/WhatsApp Messenger, and to my shame I have said phased instead of fazed...once in 2019. How embarrassing 😆. I'm relieved it isn't something I've said more often 😂.

IdaPrentice · 04/03/2024 00:52

There are some really horrible ones that are becoming so common that they're hard to challenge. My DD refused to believe me when I said it's incorrect to write "I'll never step foot in that place again", she was adamant that everyone says it so it must be right.

And so many Americanisms creeping in from social media - I especially hate "on the weekend".

"And... breath" instead of breathe is another one.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2024 03:16

BendingSpoons · 03/03/2024 14:17

'Please bear with me' is the one I always struggle with. People say 'well it's nothing to do with being naked (bare)' but it's nothing to do with animals either.

I avoid writing faze as I'm never too sure on that either!

The word "bear" has more than one meaning.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2024 03:21

honeylulu · 03/03/2024 14:43

I do wince at poor SPAG but usually then scroll on.

Phased/fazed does bother me though because wrongly using "phased" seems more common on here than the correct "fazed". I imagine people think "fazed" looks like phonetic slang and that it therefore looks incorrect (similarly to people who think "myself" is always more correct/polite than "me").Makes me feel twitchy that when I type fazed other posters will assume it is me who is wrong.

I have also noted a trend of saying "worse case scenario" recently ...

It's this kind of ubiquitous mistake on SM that makes it very unlikely that people will pick up the correct spelling organically. There are millions of people who never read books and are probably never going to run across the correct spelling.

SuperstarDeejay · 04/03/2024 03:56

I just fondly remembered the poster who was Lack Toast and Tolerant.

HonorGold · 04/03/2024 06:31

I honestly think we should be correcting SPAG on social media. Otherwise, the mistakes get re-used and then becomes the new normal.

My pet peeve is “Me and DH were…” (which is used a lot in MN) or “come and speak to Paul or I”… it should be “DH and I were…” and “come and speak to me or Paul”

The fact you are conscious that you made the mistake, is very positive (no need to feel embarrassed about a genuine mistake that you've now learned from). It's those who resolutely refuse to improve, take a correction or learn the right ways of communicating that are far more worrying!

Id like to say I agree that we should correct SPAG @HonorGold but it's like wakka-mole out there! The only way is to write well and hope the example rubs off somewhere.

SuperstarDeejay · 04/03/2024 07:21

I'll start @daisychain01 !

*whack-a-mole.

Don’t get me started on myself/yourself….”if you email myself…was it yourself I spoke to….”

AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH

It doesn’t make you sound more professional or intelligent, it makes you sound fucking thick!! I cringe at work when I hear people do it and have started correcting them

We need to track down the person responsible for starting this grammatical horror and kill them.
