To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

I’m glad you did this as constantly seeing “I’m not phased” being used on here has irrationally annoyed me for months!!!! 😂😂

And ideas how I can tactfully tell my son’s rugby coach that the word he’s looking for is “great” - not “grate” when he’s writing up the match reviews 😂😂

hopscotcher · 04/03/2024 07:47

A few things secretly get on my nerves too 😀Queue spelled as cue, kerb as curb, brake as break ("I put the breaks on").
Some of the things that mildly annoy me are, I think, American English, and it's not at all rational of me.
The plural 'women' being used wrongly irritates me too. "There was a women there who..."

The fact you are conscious that you made the mistake, is very positive (no need to feel embarrassed about a genuine mistake that you've now learned from). It's those who resolutely refuse to improve, take a correction or learn the right ways of communicating that are far more worrying!

Id like to say I agree that we should correct SPAG @HonorGold but it's like wakka-mole out there! The only way is to write well and hope the example rubs off somewhere.

Isn’t wakka-mole that avocado dip you have with Mexican food 😉?

I really, really wish that Mumnset would put in place the option to attach a smiley face emoji to someone’s post if we find it funny 😂

I know we have the ‘thanks’ option 👋🏻 but that’s a whole different meaning to finding someone’s post amusing!

The smiley face emojis wouldn’t be hidden either!!

This thread would be full of 😂😂😂😂 attached to people’s posts! 😂😂

Also rein/reign and effect/affect.

And discreet/discrete.
They are not alternative spellings!

FUPAgirl · 04/03/2024 08:21

I genuinely did not know this op, thank you

Manon10 · 04/03/2024 08:22

‘Irregardless’ is one I’ve seen a few times on here, presumably a conflation of ‘irrespective’ and regardless’, and which would logically mean the opposite of what it’s used to mean.

Hadjab · 04/03/2024 08:23

And actually, no one’s infallible, which is what MN’s spag pedants don’t seem to understand and why they sound so smug and superior. They think others are impressed by them when they’re really not

Nobody is infallible, but a lot of people just don’t want to either try or learn. So often you see someone comment along the lines of “It’s not an essay, there’s no need to write properly!”

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/03/2024 08:50

I would usually never be so crass as to correct someone on SM. However, I've been tested almost to my limit lately since joining a few nostalgia groups on FB.
I swear if I see 70's/80's ONE MORE time my head will explode.
Gah!

BringMeTea · 04/03/2024 09:33

Slightly different but nonetheless grinds my gears is mispronunciation of 'sixth'. Why? It is RARE that someone pronounces it correctly these days. It is NOT 'sickth'. Aaarrrrrrgggggh. Thank you OP.

noworklifebalance · 04/03/2024 09:36

Someone up thread mentioned: damp squid - that’s a longtime favourite of mine but probably more akin to misheard lyrics rather than SPAG.
Although I do wonder why they never questioned why a damp squid would mean a bit of a let down. Perhaps dry squids are the pinnacle of their dining experience.

In the old days, people ^knew ^it was 60s 😉.

That battle is lost I’m afraid. See also CD’s, DM’s and MP’s.

A bit list “arks” instead of “ask”
Much to my horror, my DC developed this affliction despite not knowing anyone else who pronounces it this way.

I just use “thanks” as a general “I liked that post”, whether because it was funny, informative or kind.

'Please bear with me' is the one I always struggle with. People say 'well it's nothing to do with being naked (bare)' but it's nothing to do with animals either.

I avoid writing faze as I'm never too sure on that either!

Bear is the correct usage 👍🏻

Bear With Me or Bare With Me: Which Is Correct?

When you ask someone to "bear with me," you are asking them to be patient with you. When using the phrase, "bear" is the correct spelling.

How should it be pronounced?? 😳

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/03/2024 09:46

I so often see ‘worse’ when the OP clearly means ‘worst’. They can’t all be typos, can they?

@NameChangeAgain0224 well thanks for asking! Think of 'six'. Everyone can say the number 6. Then add 'th'. And breathe..... 😄

But bear is the accepted spelling in 'bear with me.' Nothing to do with bears. Bare only means one thing. To be naked.

And what's with this proliferation of posters ending statements with question marks?

I find it very upsetting? sic.

It’s like writing in an Australian accent?

Gah!

Same here. Those bloody apostrophes! It's really '70s/'80s to indicate the missing 19, but if I see it before the s, I'm afraid I just give up reading or leave the group. I just can't understand what people think they're doing by putting them there.

I always read it with the Aussie inflection?
