To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

I realise this one’s a bit nit-pickery, but the misuse of practise/practice and defense/defence kinda grates on me when no Americans are involved.

No, it is not not-picky at all!

I am a lawyer. In England. I have a “practising certificate” to practise law. My colleague and I are constantly seeing “practicing” and “practice” used by lawyer colleagues, our HR team, on our website. It is everywhere. We are a major firm and it is embarrassing. There are no American lawyers in our organisation.

cf “license” as a noun.

‘Secketary’ was my DM’s pet pronunciation peeve.

Also “libary”, that was my Mum’s.

CloudPop · 04/03/2024 13:09

Disinterested. It's almost become accepted as meaning "uninterested" instead of meaning impartial/does not have an interest

I would have seen it that way too, except she very seriously estimated that there are only a couple of dozen people who can spell better than her on MN.

Scratch beneath the surface of any spag pedant’s pedantry and you usually find that they think they’re superior.

Oh give over. Casting nasturtiums on other's character's because you have no sense of humour is not on.

Seymour5 · 04/03/2024 13:15

I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but what about ‘led’?

The dog may be on a lead, it may even lead the way, but usually it’s being led. The only time lead is pronounced ‘led’ is when it’s a lump of metal. Otherwise its pronounced ‘leed’.

Yes, that pp (the one @pensione was admonishing) was being ironic.

But now I don't know if you were joking with "other's character's".

I'd be willing to correct you at your request 😜

WettyBite · 04/03/2024 13:15

How do so many people write “noone” for no one? That’s the worst for me.

And ‘math’ from a Brit.

I get annoyed by all these, although I would never correct anyone on here (unless it was a thread in Pedants’ Corner).

One that annoys me that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is the misuse of prone. I’ve seen it in countless books - ‘he lay prone staring at the ceiling’. He must be bloody uncomfortable then! I am very pleased when I see supine used instead.

Have never seen it in book s but surely its impossible to be looking at the ceiling in a prone position?

I don’t understand why people are so triggered by typos and spag errors.

I saw someone call a pedestal a ‘pedistool’ on a thread the other day. It made me smile and I scrolled on. The idea of correcting the poster or starting a thread didn’t occur to me.

Saw that too and laughed so hard.

Knackerednana · 04/03/2024 13:52

I can never believe how many caravans are sold that women have given birth to several babies in, instead of selling five berth caravans 🤣

Isittimeformynapyet · 04/03/2024 13:56

Just seen this on another thread:

"Careless of wether is is an entitiled T**T its still her child.

If we were all to find out that actually her reactions stems from a history of abuse under simular circumstances then surley a little empathy as to why she may have reacted like this wouldnt go a miss."

How many errors can you spot?

Remember, it's just for fun folks!

NameChangeAgain0224 · 04/03/2024 10:58

To me, yes.

There is nothing glaringly obvious about a difference in pronunciation between those two words 😬

Saying it with an ‘s’ sound in the middle feels and sounds so unnatural.

It will always be sixth (six-th) to me.

Please don’t hate me!!! 😂

I certainly don’t hate you, but I’m decidedly bemused as to how you can’t hear the difference!

DancingFerret · 04/03/2024 13:59

Adverse and averse
Dependent and dependant
Illicit and elicit

All used interchangeably by so many people.

And then there's "reoccur". 🙄

It both bothers me , 'cos I'm a massive weirdo, and entertains me, 'cos I'm a massive weirdo 😂. I do think that sometimes people do it to seem ' street '
Because I've seen relatives post on Facebook etc. Using of, and brought and the like, and then when posting to me privately using the correct terms🤷.

My MIL always said “pedal stool”
and I seem to remember “four coaster bed”

Sounds like being a weirdo runs in the family 😜

It's extra annoying me when the spelling checker on my laptop tells me I'm wrong. I can't figure out how to change it to British English.

AffIt · 04/03/2024 14:21

The use of 'obligated' rather than 'obliged' makes me grind my teeth.

I suspect the sort of people who use it are closely related to those who regularly misuse the reflexive pronoun, 'cos they think it makes 'em sound right proper fancy, dunnit?

Mmmmdanone · 04/03/2024 14:35

Mystro202 · 03/03/2024 14:50

Can someone help me out please with quash/squash. Is it not "quash a rumour" ? I've heard so many celebs and TV shows where they say "squash the rumour" I don't know why but it really annoys me when u hear it. Maybe I'm too old for the young ones vocab 🤣

Yes! This has been bugging me for ages but if I mention it out loud everyone thinks I'm wrong.

A pronunciation one that always irritates me is when (usually newsreaders) pronounce 'police' as 'pleece'.

And law and order as Laura Norder.

Isittimeformynapyet · 04/03/2024 15:05

Just remembered that my old head chef (the one who told me not to "label the point") had also listed "Walking Fridge" on the cleaning schedule.

BringMeTea · 04/03/2024 15:12

'walking fridge' 😂
