Considering the amount of people on here struggling with the COL, I find this offensive....

I do think the maximum rate of interest should be capped. I think they do it in Canada.

Trouble is, in those places where this was tried (mainly certain US States) it was found to mean certain groups (those with poor credit scores) couldn’t access credit, and were driven into the arms of loan sharks. We made the conscious decision here not to cap rates for that reason.

I often find if I've been talking about something (within earshot of my phone) I get ads on the subject appearing. I was talking about a possible holiday in Cornwall the other day and started getting ads for holiday cottages in Cornwall. Big Brother! Had you been talking to someone about loan companies OP?

Ap42 · 27/02/2024 21:52

Never seen this ad. The ones I get are all for cars.... the universe is trying to tell me something I think. Just scroll past?

Sallyh87 · 27/02/2024 21:54

Bizarrely, my ads are usually for a weird caterpillar like stuffed animal. No idea how that came about.

@DevaleraSpawnOfSatan, not sure why you are reposting an advert most of us would not have seen and increasing the amount of people who now know about this product)

fabio12 · 27/02/2024 21:57

It's all done on your search history and things you've posted - the cookies. Mine currently is trying to sell me a new Volvo, presumably because I posted about having just bought one on the expensive items thread Hmm AI still has a lot to learn.

I think the excuse that it’s Google that have tailored the ads is irrelevant. MN choose to use Google and make money off the ads that are delivered. They (and every other site that gives even a nod to being at all socially responsible) should be demanding and sourcing an ad generator that allows them to block ads that unreasonably exploit their audience.

But I also think these ads and commercial services that provide loans at these sorts of rates ought to be illegal anyway.

I believe Google Ads already has that functionality, so if one is brought specifically to their attention, Mumsnet could seek to block it.

To do it pre-emptively, though, Mumsnet would have to expend significant resources if they had to review each and every ad that could potentially pop up via Google Ads. Given that the ads are linked to both “interests” and geographic location (worldwide), there must be at least hundreds of thousands of different potential ads.

I had a conversation with my DH about a brand of shoes yesterday. Today I am being shown adverts for that brand on MN.

Hint: It's Google Ads.

Yes. They can't block every possible advert that might offend without knowing that those adverts exist.

Starting a thread in AIBU is not going to draw it to their attention. Posters need to either use Site stuff or actually contact them if an advert bothers them.

FWIW I've reported the OP which will actually let MNHQ know about the advert.

All sites have the functionality of excluding certain types of ads from Google be that gambling/ loan/ porn whatever. We don’t see porn ads here do we?
