Considering the amount of people on here struggling with the COL, I find this offensive....

@LoyalMember

Yeh what 🤔

Didn't realise anyone actually read the ads. I certainly don't 🤣

TooBored1 · 27/02/2024 17:35

As the site owner, MN are able to choose the categories of ads they seem acceptable and block any they don't want.

ProfessionalBuilding · 27/02/2024 17:37

It would appear that having money in the bank and a social conscience are non compatible. 🙄

I wss a qualified Credit Manager before I retired, I always notice APR's

Trawling through previous posts is particularly low life behaviour.

This place gets worse.

There was a woman who (if her final post was to be believed) was driven to suicide by mumsnetters earlier this week. She had come on for a hand hold after her mother, who had a prescription drug addiction, had moved in with her, and she was finding it challenging.

It’s a really nasty community at times.

PeridotSparkle · 27/02/2024 17:39

@tuvamoodyson you do you. I'm still going to judge 🤷🏻‍♀️

MySugarBabyLove · 27/02/2024 17:40

Have no idea what previous threads the sad and pathetic on here have unearthed, I can only guess they’re whatever has been quoted in the now deleted posts.

But looking through someone’s previous posts based on loan companies which exploit the desperate truly is pathetic.

As for the adverts, it mattrs not whether they’re generated on MN or by google, these companies are vultures who prey on the desperate. Typically the people who apply for these kinds of loans are the people who are unable to get credit with reputable companies, so they sign up to here out of desperation.

It’s exploitation in the extreme and should be illegal.

MelonSmoothie · 27/02/2024 17:46

@ProfessionalBuilding I remember that thread, felt very sorry for the lady and some of the grief she was getting was really unnecessary. I stopped following but I hope she has got some help IRL.

Teamarugula · 27/02/2024 17:47

Wait there are people who don’t use adblockers?

This. It's your algorithm. Welcome to the Internet. Besides, as much as I'm struggling, there has to be some degree of personal responsibility when it comes to loans.

2024Melanie · 27/02/2024 17:50

Terrible. How are these still operating when Amigo loans etc were all closed down. 79% apr is absolutely diabolical. How can they operate???

I find the threads with people banging on about buying £2k handbags to be more offensive. Disgusting waste of money!

Oh behave yourself.

PastorCarrBonarra · 27/02/2024 18:05

I’ve seen that ad too but I’ve never browsed loans. I’ve browsed savings accounts this week though, and 0% credit cards before Christmas.

That interest rate is horrendous. That company really is preying. I agree with the OP’s concerns in general.

tryingtobenormalish · 27/02/2024 18:09

Dont let an advert spoil your day.
😁

YuleDragon · 27/02/2024 18:11

im skint, and being advertised several expensive cars.. and a cat tree.

Shall i be offended?

PostItInABook · 27/02/2024 18:11

The constant ‘rotate your device’ adverts are worse! I don’t want to rotate my bastard device!!

Why am I not getting the cat tree?! I would like to see that. My mogz would love that. Grin

they're not browsing history.

I assure you, i have not visited ANY car sales, cat toy sales, or even public transport sites for months.. but those are what are being thrown at me, amongst several begging adverts for various charities.

While I don’t find the ad itself offensive, I do think that there’s a difference between seeing adverts for expensive items when you don’t have the money, and seeing adverts for loan companies which are essentially telling you you can borrow even if you don’t have a good credit record.

Because so often people who are struggling with money could be easily tempted into borrowing if they’re desperate enough.

Technically handbags are not a waste of money. They are an incredibly good investment if you buy right as are art and whisky.

Agree.

There is an element of browsing in there, but equally I constantly see adverts for cars.

I am blind and don’t have a driving licence, and have never looked at cars in my life.

So if it’s based on an algorithm then it’s gone wrong somewhere.

ManchesterLu · 27/02/2024 18:22

Offensive is the wrong word.
Just because you're offered something doesn't mean you have to take it.

DetOliviaBenson · 27/02/2024 18:30

I've been using ad blockers for that long I forgot most sites had ads! Why doesn't everyone just use an ad blocker? Confused

But, yes like previous posters said those ads are from Google and based on a person's personal searches.

ProfessionalBuilding · 27/02/2024 18:31

I agree “offensive” probably isn’t the right word but that rate of interest would be (literally) criminal where I am (Canada).

Its not Mumsnet’s fault whatsoever, but predatory lenders like the one in the ad are very dangerous, and prey on the desperate.
