I have Adblocker so don't see this shit, but would still prefer it if Mumsnet could tailor/monitor the ads they use to make money (whether that's via another service like Google or not) to avoid products that are harmful and unethical.

CharlotteBog · 27/02/2024 18:33

Use the Brave browser - not an Ad or APR in sight!

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 27/02/2024 18:36

But MN make money from ads, unless you are on Premium it is a free to use site.

#22 years and still here. Old school.

Yes, I am sure they get a choiceAnd can ban categories.

I got one for one of those online gambling companies, like Vegas 365, or something like that.

I think those are totally predatory and shouldn’t appear on a parenting site.

BeauSignoles · 27/02/2024 18:45

Whether it’s MN or Google it’s still exploitative.

the internet is completely monetised now, ads at every turn, data gathering at every opportunity. Gross.

LilacMcMiaow · 27/02/2024 18:46

Unfortunately the alternative to having adverts is to have a subscription fee for all Mumsnet users (with no free access). It would be nice if MN could choose which ads are used, but I don’t think that’s how it works. The best we can do if continue to petition the powers that be (to cap interest rates and/or to increase minimum wage, to cap rent etc), and for us all to raise awareness about these lenders. They should be avoided at all costs (although, I appreciate some people might have no other option than to use a payday loan with extortionate rates). The ad is not great but the company itself is worse and the fact that people are having turn to payday loans is an appalling state of affairs.

Flowerfairie · 27/02/2024 18:47

Why doesn't everyone just use an ad blocker?

a. I don’t mind ads, sometimes they show me things I like.

b. Its a value exchange. do you realise that if everyone used a ad-blocker there would be no ‘free’ sites at all. You’d have to have every site behind a paywall as they would generate no income

Lwrenn · 27/02/2024 18:52

My ads for everything is temu, that app is desperate for me to download it.
Unless it offers me a detached 10 bed, 5 acre property for 99p I'm refusing to.

shoppingshamed · 27/02/2024 19:15

YuleDragon · 27/02/2024 18:15

they're not browsing history.

I assure you, i have not visited ANY car sales, cat toy sales, or even public transport sites for months.. but those are what are being thrown at me, amongst several begging adverts for various charities.

Me neither, I've never visited a car website yet have an advert for Volvo on this thread

Devonshiregal · 27/02/2024 19:31

Notherefortheclout · 27/02/2024 15:59

I agree with you, it is disgusting.
Someone who uses this app may be financially struggling and coming across that advertisement could tempt them to get a loan to help themself out. But really they're making things a whole lot worse for themselves.
People know loan companies exist they don't need them shoved in their faces at every opportunity.

Not mumsnet’s fault though. Not the advert’s. Blame the government who allows this kid of awful lending in the first place and the lenders, who are morally devoid.

I find the threads with people banging on about buying £2k handbags to be more offensive. Disgusting waste of money!

on basis of that thread I bought two new bags based on other posters recommendations

SomethingDifferentt · 27/02/2024 19:51

Yes me too, Volvo on every page. If thats generated by my personal browsing history then they've badly fucked up somewhere as I'm definitely NOT their target market 😂

DonnaBanana · 27/02/2024 19:52

I don’t see the problem, if you are short of money surely it is helpful to see offers of credit and loans because you need money.

Davros · 27/02/2024 19:55

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 27/02/2024 15:53

Offense works for me.

Or offence even

MandyRiceDavies · 27/02/2024 19:56

Not sure I'd use the word offensive, although like you I hate these exploitative lenders, OP.

I think it's a mistake to assume that MN vet the ads at all- we've had all sorts of unpleasant and inappropriate ads on here. It doesn't help that practically every other post is actually a paid promotion (which they do vet).

WhatIsHeThinking · 27/02/2024 20:01

My ads are for Boots, diamond rings and hotel breaks.

Shared iPad so fascinated what DH has been googling!

Short term, low value loans have high APR... what a shocker

Fleetheart · 27/02/2024 20:09

These are ads targeted through your demographic profile; the company is criteo they also can use what you’ve looked at before. You can opt out if you click on the little arrow top right I think. But mainly get an ad blocker.

Even if tailored to the OP, It's crazy that companies can exploit people like that. How are they allowed to charge that much?

Pinkchicken85 · 27/02/2024 20:21

I get adverts for shit skirts, something I’ve never googled.
that loan company is depressing, one tiny step up from a loan shark.

CatMadam · 27/02/2024 20:26

People going through old threads to ‘catch op out’- please I beg of you get a hobby, what an embarrasing way to spend your time!

VerduraNet · 27/02/2024 20:36

@DevaleraSpawnOfSatan companies have always existed with loans like that,
