Anyone hate these posts?

  • really really really long posts
  • long posts with NO paragraphs
  • posts which start ‘ I have a friend, let’s call her Jane; her DH, let’s call him Sam… you can’t bloody well follow the post. Much easier just to say Friend and DH.
Any others? 😊

Cotonsugar · 26/02/2024 11:43

A short sentence reply that makes no sense.
Also the whole DH, DD, DS etc. not sure why, just very twee sounding but I wasn’t here when it started so maybe I’m missing something. Noticed that MIL doesn’t have a D in front though😂

There's a lot of promotion of disordered eating on here, and I wish Mumsnet would clamp down on it. It's actually dangerous.

From competitive under- eating posts to 'advice' like: try eating just 500 calories a day or fasting, and people claiming they feel HUGE at a size 12. Really grim.

This. I saw a post recently where someone said they were overweight by two pounds, said in a very serious way🙄

OMGitsnotgood · 26/02/2024 11:46

Telling OP they could have googled the answer - well yea if you have several hours to sift through the responses when MN can often provide a qualitative filter - eg a tried and tested recipe/holiday accommodation/ places to visit.

Mothership4two · 26/02/2024 11:46

You get a few ageist comments on MN @NancyPickford especially about DMs and DMILs. There was one a while back about a fussy eater DM or DMil and several posters said it was probably because she was from an older generation some saying she wasn't used to modern palates and others that maybe she had problems chewing. This lady was in her 50s, she was only a couple of years older than me!

I read one yesterday that was advising eating 500 calories a day. Ridiculous advice.

There are actually health benefits in this, if treated like a fast and done either occasionally or just several days in a week. Sorry!

(I don’t do this myself, tried it once for the autophagy stuff but couldn’t concentrate or have proper conversations)

rubyredknowsitall · 26/02/2024 11:48

@Cotonsugar

Haha, yeah I mean if you hear it out loud it's:

"My darling husband BEATS ME"

The darling is better dropped 🤣

I don't think the advice was occasionally. It was every day.

And if you found you couldn't function properly while doing it, what does that tell you?

If people want to try weird, faddy diets (although I wish they wouldn't), I think they should at least get some advice from a doctor or nutritionist, not random Mumsnet posters.

I am irritates by the 'here' posters who believe they are expert witnesses in whatever is being discussed.

Man here.
Teacher here.
Polar explorer here.

Why not just say what you want to say, then add 'That's been my experience as a polar explorer.'

I can't even properly express why I find it so annoying!

It's called appeal to authority and is a logical fallacy.

An example: "I have worked in mental health for 20 years and can tell that this person has [condition]". I always long for another poster to reply, saying "I have worked in mental health for 30 years and can tell that you don't know what you're talking about".

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 26/02/2024 12:03

People stressing about back fat then go on to say they’re a size 8.

It's perfectly possible to be a size 8 and have back fat/belly fat etc.

It's about proportion, not just general dress size.

Lairymary · 26/02/2024 12:08

Responses to the the OP whingeing about "DH's" behaviour.
"How old is he? 12?"
A totally pointless and eye rolling comment.

I have worked in mental health for forty years and am now retired. You're both wrong 😁

@SaveMeTheLabelOfThatPerfumeOnTheTable

So many mumsnetters apparently wouldn’t dream of eating any convenience foods or upf’s because they cook everything from scratch. It’s definitely bordering on orthorexia.

I do cook from scratch and I am pretty relaxed about all areas of my life. It's just my way and I don't spend hours in the kitchen, but I prefer to eat a bit healthily and more cheaply. I like cooking. I try to avoid UPF. OH had a health scare so the food I prepare is more healthy these days. I do use some tinned foods. When DS were little and had friends back I would buy pizzas as I got fed up with fussy eaters. We do get the occasional fish and chips or takeaways. There will be lots of chocolate in our house at Easter. And I don't judge!

BrandiHeeler · 26/02/2024 12:15

Constantly referring to fathers of newborn babies who want to spend their first hours on earth with them and support their partner who has just given birth as “random men”.

Absolute refusal to even engage their brains and think for a second - ridiculous!

winewine · 26/02/2024 09:13

Where SEN is used as an excuse for every bit of bad behaviour.

There seems to be no such thing as bad parenting or badly behaved children any more.

Where SEN = autism. Any kind of bad behaviour is always due to a child being autistic (in the expert opinion of MNers).

Posts in which the someone cherry picks certain behaviours a child exhibits and then asks "Could my child have autism"? This is inevitably followed by MNers saying "yes, that's definitely autism" because diagnosing autism from a remove is their superpower.

Bonus points if the posts contain gems like: "Girls mask more than boys so it's not surprising your daughter has a meltdown after school" or "Autistic people have food issues so that is why they don't like to go to the pub".

YouOKHun · 26/02/2024 12:17

auspreg · 26/02/2024 05:57

Using "they" instead of he/she. But then they usually slip up during the post and say he/she at some stage anyways 😂

I struggle with “they” on and off Mumsnet as I am often not sure how many people are involved. If someone is talking about one person and they say “they are an accountant” then I can work it out but if using “they”, to say “they are very talented” then that’s less clear, shouldn”t they say “they IS very talented”, it sounds terrible but it would help me out.

DontGiveADuck · 26/02/2024 12:19

‘Anyone else got this virus?’

Which virus? Any of the hundreds of viruses that are doing the rounds at any time. I doubt I have the same virus as someone living 200 miles away.

It’s hardly a surprise that someone else happens to have a cold.

‘Must be covid, I tested negative but I’m sure it was covid.’

Why must it always be covid? As opposed to all the other cold/flu viruses that aren’t covid that all still exist.

The most bizarre acronym I saw here was DDiPoW - it meant Darling Diana Princess of Wales. And it didn’t seem to be in any way ironic, the poster was sincere!

SoundTheSirens · 26/02/2024 12:31

As well as several which have been already mentioned, posts which annoy me include:

Obviously fake typos in thread titles e.g. "AIBU to not wank [want] this?" which the OP will then claim is an autocorrect, oh silly me teehee.

Posters who are third or fourth to reply and ask a question clearly answered in the OP if they only bothered to read it. E.g. OP: "My son is 7 and wants to play football and learn violin, is this too much after-school activity?" Poster #3: "well it depends on his age OP, how old is he?"

And my ultimate pet hate: posters who reply in a longish thread simply saying "100% what X said" / "OP you should absolutely do what X said" / "X has summed it up perfectly" but they don't quote X so you have to scroll back hoping X's post will be just a few posts further up from their comment or at least on the same page, but it never is!

😅

That's hilarious.

Agree re Ddog, Dcat etc - surely the point is to shorten the word not add an entirely unnecessary extra letter?!

Obeast · 26/02/2024 10:28

@saltinesandcoffeecups @Newsenmum there is never a reason to quote the original post. It clogs up the thread and irritates everyone.
Simply type @ and the OPs username will pop up if you feel the need to tag them.

🙄

BebbanburgIsMine · 26/02/2024 12:38

@Citrusandginger

I agree, but to be fair I haven't seen a begging thread for a while.

Maybe Mumsnet roots them out nowadays. I could be wrong of course, but I don't think there's nearly as many as there used to be.

Februaryfeels · 26/02/2024 12:42

@sammylady37 That is the most batshit crazy thing I've seen in a long time

I bet that poster talks about the other royals as if they know them intimately as well

Yep, those drive my mad. Sometimes I wonder if they mean Dick head instead of dear husband.
